Makeup for spring is almost always lighter and dewier than its fall counterpart. But one of my favorite trends so far is the use of pastel and Easter egg shades, but in a totally non-precious way. I’m not usually one for light purples, pinks, blues, and greens in beauty. But I’m truly starting to think about them in a new light.
Hints of the purple hair streak trend had already popped up in editorials before Jack and Lazaro sent them (and green too) down the runway at Milk. The shimmery mix of shades at Derek Lam even feels slightly rock star, in a Jem and the Holograms kind of way. And the robin’s egg blue at Luella is simply cheeky and downright fun.
I’ve only just now switched into my dark and moody fall black and bordeaux phase (current obsession: MAC Resolutely Red) but I’m already excited to try something outside my normal comfort zone this spring.
Also, does this trend not have Drew Barrymore’s name written all over it?

But this is not your average competition for campus bragging rights.
Diesel is currently collecting submissions for Diesel:U:Music 2009 - where past winners include The Cool Kids and Diplo. And if they were, well, not a cartoon, we’re sure that Jem and the Holograms would have taken the title. (We died over this picture and simply had to use it.)
If we could play guitar or sing, we’d be all over this, as the two winning artists or groups will go on a world tour from July - November, get serious air time in Diesel stores and on their online radio station, and major incentives like studio space, merchandising help and video production.
Sounds just like the kind of break that changes lives, people. But the deadline is next Friday, so jump on this quick. Sign up for the networking site at DieselUMusic - there’s all kinds of other cool stuff to check out even if you’re just a music lover, not player.
If you win, we fully expect VIP passes.
Two months ago, Dazed and Confused did an enchanting, enchanted shoot on the set of the Neverending Story film.
It featured two models, vaguely dressed as the film’s faraway heroes, The Empress and Atreyu, wearing elfin dresses from Prada and Rodarte.
The spread was styled by Katie Shillington, a fashion editor at the magazine, and we loved it.
Now this month, something else that we love:
A spread with Bridget Hall, also styled by Katie and inspired by another ’80s child classic, Jem and the Holograms. Dazed even made a music video to go with the story, and although it featured a Courtney Love soundtrack, we thought of something else:
The quote from Anna Wintour about how the best stylists work from a place of childhood loss, “the degree to which the fashion editor’s visual perspective is governed by his or her earliest years… in a great stylist is a deep pool of memory and longing. It’s down there that the extraordinary images swim from.”
Ms. Shillingford seems to like swimming from her old TV set.
