Quote of the Day

“Celebrities — the cult — they don’t exist before Versace. This kind of thing to go and dress a rock band — nobody did that before Gianni did.”—Donatella Versace to OUT Magazine (via WWD) where she’s on the cover with model Paul Sculfor, aka that guy who dated Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz. Cult of celebrity, indeed.

Michelle Obama Cuts Her Hair, A Nation Waits

michelleobamabobhaircut.jpgNow we know many of you, not unlike some of us, are a little over it when it comes to the First Lady and her style choices.

And of course, the work she does is incredibly more important than which Michael Kors sheath she chooses for an appearance. But you can’t ignore the fact that, like it or not, she garners major press every time she makes a move.

Now she’s made perhaps her boldest decision since the Jason Wu Inaugural Ball dress by chopping off her hair into a much shorter bob, which I for one think is incredibly chic.

What interests me more will be whether or not this translates into a national trend like those inspired by Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Aniston, and Farrah Fawcett.

It’s even got the potential to go international.

UPDATE: Okay, so apparently it’s not a cut, just a rather brilliant updo. But we would highly recommend she go for this look on a permanent basis. We love it more now than we did this morning.

What Are You Beyond?

Iambeyonddramabag.jpgI’m a huge Bikram yoga junkie, though my practice has certainly fallen off a bit since I landed at Fashionista. Note to self: get back to that hot room!

That said, I’m always on the lookout for cool yoga gear. Currently, I’m obsessing over these canvas totes from Beyond Yoga, which are actually not yoga-centric at all but definitely useful for carrying around my mat, clothes, and coconut water.

But really, they’re just super cute canvas bags that graffiti artist Andre Charles adorned with words selected by some A-List celebs. They were asked to complete the sentence “I am beyond…”

Do Celebrity Beauty Endorsements Work?

salma hayek looks pretty 2.jpgOn Friday, WWD reported that Salma Hayek is currently working on an undisclosed beauty project. Earlier this month, it was also rumored that Jennifer Aniston is on the hunt for an endorsement deal herself.

But all I could think was, really? Isn’t the celebrity endorsement template a bit staid, especially in today’s tough economic times? There are plenty of models out there that could do the same job for much less money and hassle. Sure, a celebrity creates more exposure for your brand, but do they really influence consumers to spend money? I can’t say I know anyone who’s rushing out to CVS because Drew Barrymore’s shilling a Cover Girl mascara via alluring blinks. (And just think of the stable of stars L’Oréal Paris employs - sixteen celebrities, including Beyonce, Scarlett and Eva Longoria Parker - and somehow they can’t think of how to help that year-to-year net profit drop of 26.6%.)

You’d think beauty companies would try to cut some of the dead weight right now - could what Neutrogena gets out of Susie Castillo’s advertisements really make up for whatever she was paid? - unless we’re totally off. Do celebrities smiling and flipping their hair really get you to spend your cash more so than models?

Vogue is Like Star

vogue cover with jennifer aniston calling out angelina likes its star magazine.jpgNobody can stop talking about the December Vogue cover with Jennifer Aniston. Some are fixated by the Photoshopping, but most are shockingly interested in Jennifer calling out Angelina on stealing her husband back in 2005 and now semi-gloating about it.

But our reaction went more like this: Since when does Vogue put up cover lines, like the one at left, like they’re Us Weekly?

“What Angelina Did Was Very Uncool” sounds like something I might glimpse on the cover of somebody’s trash mag while on a neighboring treadmill, not what America’s leading fashion magazine should use to sell their issue.

We get that cover lines are all about grabbing the newsstand browser, and that anything about Angelina obviously sells, but still, forgive us for thinking there were boundaries.

Not to mention, that quote isn’t even correctly attributed to their cover girl - the extended quote reveals that she actually said something considerably different. But, we guess that doesn’t matter if you’re selling it like Star.
