Backstage at VS: Breakfast & Bras

doutzen pull vs09.jpg“Everyone just expects me to jump now. I think they just think I jump naturally, like put me in great shoes and I jump,” said Caroline Trentini backstage at the Victoria’s Secret show this afternoon.

“Will you ever not jump?”

“No! I mean, as long as people ask me to jump, I’ll jump!”

Once I got that all-important question out of the way, I ran around the room and asked a handful of our favorite girls two critical questions:

1. What’d you have for breakfast?
2. What are you wearing to tonight’s after party?

Chanel Iman said she ate eggs, bacon, potatoes, cereal and fruit. I would have said, “Don’t lie,” but I wasn’t in the mood to pick a fight with an angel and she followed with, “I think eating is sexy.” She wants to wear the Valli dress she wore down his runway, but if it doesn’t show up, she’s sure she can find something “super sexy to wear with my fabulous boots.”

Julia Stegner’s wearing Herve Leger, surprise! (There were two camps of girls, the ones wearing Herve and the ones specifically not wearing Herve because everyone else is wearing Herve.) She’s not a breakfast person, but “I had pomegranate seeds this morning! Only because I’m on antibiotics and I have to eat something.”

Angel of the Morning

angelleadimage.JPGThings kicked off at the tents this morning with the 9 am Michael Angel show. I was tired, obvs, and frustrated that I didn’t have my Daily to read while I waited for the show to start (they were all kinds of late getting to Bryant Park!) But I soon got over it.

Lauren Santo Domingo, Derek Blasberg, Julia Stegner, Julie Gilhart, and Linda Fargo were all settled in the front row as a parade of prints and sequins trotted down the runway, giving me a much needed jolt. (Seriously, can’t Diet Coke become a sponsor? I don’t drink coffee so that McCafe situation does nothing for me.)

But I digress. The detail work on the clothes was especially impressive on the Swarovski bedecked flesh-colored long sleeved top that Iekeliene rocked. And the peep toe Manolo booties were to die for.

Equally obsession-inducing, in my book, were the bright colored Alexis Bittar baubles. Those earrings have me seriously considering piercing my ears…yet again.

Carine Made Me Do It

juliastegnercrimpedhair1.jpgThere’s been a heated internal beauty debate going in my head since first seeing crimped hair again in a major way on the February runways.

I’ve gone back and forth between swearing I would never ever do this to myself again and thinking that maybe I could pull it off. Besides, while I suck at straightening my hair, this is a lot more foolproof.

This afternoon I finally got to dive into the September issue of Vogue Paris. Along with the Sasha P./Liza editorial below, I’ve now fixated on two shots of Julia Stegner, in all her crimped glory from the beauty pages.

Now I’m 100% going to Target this weekend to pick up a new crimping iron. Of course I don’t have the genius Laurent Phillipon on hand to perfect my mane, but I am thinking this could be another helpful tool to have in the arsenal for the seemingly neverending battle of growing out my bangs.

Oh, the things you and your magazine can convince me to do, Carine.

Maybelline May, June, July

maybelline ny v mag contest video.jpgMaybelline’s made a calendar.

The girls wear clothes in this one, but they also wear some spectacularly elaborate makeup. V Magazine’s partnered with the make-up brand—which, by the way, really is pulling out all the fashion forward stops—for a contest in which you can win a copy of the calendar and a year’s supply of V (courtesy of Lafayette? Ok, too much True Blood.)

Anyway, in this behind-the-scenes video you can watch Erin Wasson look particularly cat-like, Julia Stegner illustrate walls and Kemp Muhl straddle a tube of mascara. Punches of neon give the video, and calendar, a super 80s vibe. Is that what we’ll see on the runways?

People Are Talking

I Wanna Be A Supermodel

behati julia shannon off duty.jpgI live in a model building.

Or at least I call it that - it’s actually just a regular building in the west village in which agencies rent out a few apartments to house models coming and going out of the city.

And living with them, among them, seeing them every single day has really exacerbated my love hate relationship will all things model. For example, I hate being in the elevator with one when I’m eating McDonald’s fries out of the brown paper bag. But I love seeing them in their natural habitat and trying to absorb just an ounce of their off-duty style.

Which brings me to the problem - I can’t master their casual chic look without looking like a bag lady. And I know it’s not because my legs don’t reach my armpits, I’ve seen normal looking girls pull off Kate’s layers and Stam’s slicked back ponytails. My closets packed with scarves, sheer tees, leggings, skinny jeans — all the ingredients! But something’s missing.

Do you have this look down? What am I missing?

Julia Stegner’s New Gig

Julia Stegner Mercedes Benz.jpgSome girls know they’ve made it when they land a Vogue cover. For some, the moment is marked with Victoria’s Secret wings and for others, a major cosmetics campaign.

But Julia Stegner’s done all of that, at the ripe old modeling age of 24.

So now the German model will be the International Face of Mercedes Benz. Job requirements include public appearances at Mercedes’ sponsored Fashion Weeks across the globe and starring in the new ad campaign shot by Michelangelo di Battista. Julia wears a red Anne Valerie Hash gown which morphs into a red carpet and in turn wears Mercedes’ latest car.

“Mercedes-Benz and fashion - they really fit together well. I think Mercedes-Benz cars are chic - just like fashion. So I’m delighted to be the international fashion brand-ambassador for Mercedes-Benz,” said Julia.

If only every car ad featured a Vogue cover girl…

Ryan McGinley Likes Models, and Other Things on the Women Management Blog…

shannan_pola07_w.jpgWe love the trend of modeling agencies starting their own blogs (thanks, Elite, for starting it!) because it gives us gossip and access to our favorite girls at like half the speed of stalking.

This week, Women Management launched their own blog, and here’s what we learned:

*That Ryan McGinley shot Shannan Click (left) for his own personal work.

*That Mariacarla Boscono is friends with Sean Lennon (did they meet through Irina?).

*That Meredith Melling Burke totally digs Toni Garnn.

*That Julia Stegner shot a Maybelline campaign in the rain last Friday and we totally missed it!

Check it out for yourselves.

At Burberry, Blood on the Tracks

burberrylily.jpgHours before Burberry Prorsum’s fall show, Peta protesters stormed the Milan boutique, throwing buckets of red paint on the windows.

Burberry’s rebuttal? A runway full of dark magic, maille references, and warrior princesses that met the future halfway with the medieval. There were no reds on their runway yesterday, but the message from Christopher Bailey was clear: this means war.

The battles were many - Burberry’s trench-heavy heritage vs. Burberry’s bubble-swoosh future. Fair weather party girls vs. stormy, storming women at work. Even the fabrics seemed to fight with each other: a print medley at the show’s end had Julia Stegner in a silk camo print - except up close, the camo turned out to be flowers, and coats on the runway resembled Carine Roitfeld’s winning Alaïa jacket.

Burberry’s fashion crusade even hit the headlines: Mr. Bailey’s chosen models were so skinny, some threatened to disappear into their enormous lapels, and back in action was Snejana, the model who sat out the New York season after being targeted - over and over again - as a danger to women’s health, thanks to her visible bones. She may have lost the battle to walk in Marc and Oscar, but at least on the Milan catwalks (D&G and Pringle, besides Burberry) she appears to be winning her war.
