We knew Karen Walker’s SS10 collection was going to be wonderful when the show program described the inspiration as “cult 1960’s British television show The Prisoner, a seaside holiday resort that serves as a prison for retired spies, combined with trippy 60’s psychedelia…”
That sentence sums up all our fashion fantasies, particularly the one where we fight the Cold War in Pucci with Penelope Tree. But back to the real world…
In the cozy Altman Building, Karen Walker showed a crisp collection filled with lots of navy, cardigans, blazers, and ruffles galore. Her signature classicism went psychedelic with bold acid-trip prints, round tortoise shell sunglasses, yellow straw hats, and a PVC miniskirt that made us swoon. Walker collaborated with shoe brand Pointer to make boat shoes in unexpected colors that models wore with white striped athletic socks, a look we wish we could pull off. The accessories rocked, too - gold charm necklaces and printed totes (is a bag line on the horizon?) rounded out a prim and proper LSD (the drug, not the socialite this time) fantasy.
We left longing for summertime in Nantucket, especially on this hazy, rainy day.
We’ve avoided Twilight madness (though has anyone else noticed that one of the girls from the movie is in the Terry Richardson-shot ads for Belvedere Vodka?), but we’ve started to notice an influx of actual fangs in fashion.
Models, both male and female, rock pointy front teeth in Karen Walker’s newest lookbook and they’re underneath all the red lipstick in Wildfox’s lookbook. We’ve noticed vampire-themed editorials full of fangs ranging from Vogue Italia to Cosmo, too. And Alison Mosshart wears a particularly violent pair in The Kills’ Black Balloon video.
They managed to miss the runways this season, but are they something you’d actually wear?
Otte, one of our all time favorite West Village (& Brooklyn) boutiques is having a last minute sale at their corporate offices.
They’re talking racks of Inhabit, See by Chloe, Maloles, Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, Karen Walker, Vanessa Bruno, Dallin Chase and more with everything costing around or under $50.
It starts today, in an hour actually and lasts until tomorrow at 7pm - or until everything’s gone. Cash only and everything’s final sale - if you have more questions you can call 212-213-4030.
So head to 37 West 26th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue, suite 305, and if you get to the Loeffler Randall’s before we do, we may have to hurt you.
Mental notes at Karen Walker:
- Is endlessly whining that you didn’t pack an umbrella the new thing?
- I love Lynn Yaeger’s hair - how come her and Mickey Boardman are always sitting together?
- Faded leopard prints, oversized everything, Conehead-esque straw hats - and oddly, this is making me excited for Spring…
- Ohh, love all the glasses. Definitely one of the better accessories aside from the rope necklaces.
- Do those rope necklaces actually weigh more than the models?
- Gift bag = Karen’s lookbook and pom pom tights…
- She’s trying to bring crimped hair back, but a little more brushed out
- These clothes are like the best combination of your boyfriend’s clothes, great tribal prints and some girly finishes

A much-discussed theory this week is whether the runway’s hemlines can predict an upcoming recession.
The saying goes, if dresses and skirts get longer, the economy is getting worse. It stems from a period in the ’20s, when short skirts revealed expensive silk stockings, and long skirts disguised cheaper wool ones. Now it’s thought by some (including Faran’s dad, an econ guy) that using more fabric spurs and encourages more spending within the entire industry, and you start to see long dresses when people get worried about sales.
We did a little obsessive check on Style.com and found that while designers geared to older luxury shoppers - Marc, Donna, Vera - did feature longer silhouettes, their secondary lines - Marc by, DKNY, and Vera Lavender - all had pretty short skirts. Check out DKNY’s red scorcher at left.
Other young brands - Sass & Bide, Anna Sui, Karen Walker, Charlotte Ronson - also had an a-line sheath shape happening, which means not everyone is surrendering to the grungy or silky long skirts that Erin Fetherston seemed to favor this season.
But does it mean anything for the stock market? We’re not sure - let’s see how Prada’s IPO does once it’s been public for a little bit.
Den’s New Denizen

Den - the hip NYC concept boutique that showcases a single designer for a few months, currently has their shelves stocked with the effortlessly cool offerings of menswear designer and CFDA darling Tim Hamilton.
Hamilton’s menswear designs are very much in keeping with the store’s tradition of stocking the designers that everyone wants, exactly when they want it and share a similar aesthetic to previous featured labels Cheap Monday and Rag & Bone.
Stripes, fitted jackets, and narrowly-cut trousers are the mainstays of the Tim Hamilton look, and we have to say we’re hoping to see more boys sporting this adorable style.
Checking out cute Tim Hamilton-clad guys will help us pass the time waiting for Den’s next featured designer - our favorite New Zealand-based label - Karen Walker!

We’ve never been to Australia, but we are really into their fashion scene (and their wombats). We love Ksubi (you know, they used to be Tsubi, but now they’re not…), and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
In fact, it seems like there are two Australias – one that pumps out drunk twenty-something rowdy tourist boys and exports them to youth hostels around the world, and a second, mysterious Australia where original, creative, young designers are making clothes for their friends.
If you don’t feel like taking a 20 hour flight to find out more, you can obsess over the land down under on the internet at www.ozdesigner.com Our personal favorite is Alice McCall, whose summer dresses, as in the picture above, are totally refreshing and different, and have a gorgeous color palette.

PS: and Faran’s favorite Aussies are Sass + Bide, and Karen Walker!

Here’s a fun leak from the Bravo office, accompanied by a tip from our gumshoe JM:
It seems our beloved Project Runway will start a little later than planned. This means you have to wait longer for your Tim Gunn fix, and we have to wait longer to erase the memory of Michael Knight’s trash-tastic runway.
It also means the rumors of a shallow talent pool might be true - how can you air a show that hasn’t yet been cast?
We adore Project Runway and hope the right contestants have found their way to Parsons, but just in case they’re still looking, here’s an idea:
Why not get some real designers to do a Project Runway All Stars edition? Though Michael Kors once told us he’d win the show if he ever entered, we’re dreaming of some hot up-and-comers -
Vena Cava, Ben Cho, Josh Goot, Karen Walker, Ashleigh Verrier…
Oh Bravo, please!
