Luxury For Sale

bernardarnault.jpgSo it seems Condé Nast is not the only one tightening up its stable of brands.

Word is that LVMH has another big sale on. According to the head of a private equity firm who is currently in Paris looking at the fashion houses’ books, Celine, Loewe, and Kenzo are on the block. It appears that CEO Bernard Arnault is no longer taking excuses for under-performers.

A New York-based investment adviser who spoke to Fashionista on the condition of anonymity said, “These labels are making no money, their margins are way down!” Just today WWD ran a story on Loewe focusing on its core leather business. And we all recently witnessed how well-received Phoebe Philo’s collection was at Celine. But it seems that efforts to try to unload the brands is still moving forward.

Confetti for Breakfast at Kenzo

kenzo ss10.jpgI’ve never seen as much gold confetti in my life as I did at this morning’s Kenzo show - not even New Year’s Eve can compare.

It wasn’t totally pointless - it did signal a giant shift in the collection from safari chic to just plain African inspired clothing. Everything was suddenly extra colorful, with shockingly bright pinks and blues and colorful head wraps on the succession of black models.

Post-show, I asked Antonio Marras if he was using his all black line-up to make a statement, especially since diversity in fashion is a forever hot topic, but he attributed it to more creative purposes.

“The idea of the mirage in the desert when you are just beaten by the sun, and then you see these women, all black, in all these colors, and it’s a different feeling, it’s just a like a vision given by the sun.” At least that’s how his assistant translated it, Marras only speaks Italian; but I got the idea he was trying to build some sort of desert hallucination on his Paris runway.

Next time, maybe more focus on the clothes than the setting.

Feeling Minimal?

erin wasson in a tshirt and shorts.jpgLet’s count it up:

1. Erin Wasson just had garage sale of her clothes because she wanted to be free of all her stuff, and adopt a more “utilitarian” style.

2. Kenzo’s auctioning off a bunch of his art a la YSL and Versace because he wants to live “more free, lighter”.

3. The over-the-top feel of the 80’s runways have made everyone groan “ew” and mourn the days when sequins, shoulder pads and mini-skirts weren’t all on the same runway.

4. This was all preceded by the death of the It bag, over and over.

So does this mean everybody’s over the 80’s before the re-runs have even hit the racks, and are going back to the times of simple lines and uncomplicated pieces (also known as a big part of the 90’s) already?

Are you feeling like you’re over too much fuss in your fashion (and life)? Or are some people just selling their stuff for the cash, and not necessarily for the free closet space?

Dubai Holds Baby Fashion Week… Like, Actual Babies

Dubai Holds Baby Fashion Week... Like, Actual Babies Dubai’s seen a lot of fashion action lately, first with Calvin Klein dropping by the paradise city, then Zac Posen and Roberto Cavalli flying into town.

But this week, they may have outdone themselves with the arrival of Children’s Fashion Week.

The Dubai event showcases Kenzo, Moschino, and a handful of French children’s brands, and brings us back to a question we asked a few weeks ago:

Should children be encouraged to explore designer fashion? Or should we leave them alone to develop a semblance of style that lives outside of brands (or outside of anything “cute” or “cool,” if that’s the way they want to play it?).

Maybe it’s a worrisome sign that we’re not surprised at all that there’s a Dubai Children’s Fashion Week.

Or maybe we’re just wondering if the Moschino Kids extra larges will actually fit us, because they’ll definitely be cheaper…
