Patrons of the Arts

Things we liked in this behind-the-scenes video of Vogue’s Art Issue.

1. It was Anna’s idea to put Lady Gaga in the issue.

2. Lady Gaga is fully aware that she does the pantsless thing and wants something new for the shoot. Also, she arrived naked with just a raincoat on.

3. Without even saying a word, Cate Blanchett’s facial expressions prove her a better actress than most.

4. Two of our favorite redheads: Lily and Grace!

5. That it may be more exciting than the actual issue.

Lily Rages

lily cole in rage.jpgSally Potter, the renowned British filmmaker, takes on the fashion industry in her newest film Rage.

The film poses as a series of interviews shot by a young boy on his camera phone at New York Fashion Week. Behind the scenes he stumbles upon the craziest of the fashion crowd; Jude Law and Lily Cole play models, Judi Dench plays the fashion critic, Eddie Izzard’s the money and John Leguizamo’s his bodyguard.

Someone’s shot in the trailer and it looks as though a satirical fashion forward version of Clue ensues. The movie premieres via satellite September 24th, details here.

Lily Cole’s Fashion’s Night Out Plans

lily cole playboy cover longchamp.jpgIt feels like everyone in New York is doing something for Fashion’s Night Out which means our inbox is flooded and the only way to easily distinguish between actual fashion week invites and Fashion’s Night Out press releases is to hit delete.

But we hesitated over Longchamp’s hoping, thinking maybe for a second that Kate Moss would be in town to host their September 10th bash.

She’s not, but Lily Cole is.

Their new fall collection’s called Gatsby and Michael Arenella & his Dreamland Orchestra will play a jazz set in honor of the theme before Lykke Li DJs the rest of the night.

How we’ll work this in between everything else, we’re not sure. But we’ll layout our divide and conquer plans on the 9th.

My One and Only

lilycoleandfrizz.jpgWe may be buzzing with excitement as news about Fashion Week trickles in. And we’re starting to plan wardrobes and new beauty looks for the fall that is soon to be upon us.

But the fact remains that it is hot as balls outside and more humid than anyone with wavy to curly hair should ever have to endure. Unfortunately for me, my frizz doesn’t turn out as sexy as Lily’s in this photo or any other for that matter.

I’ve basically tried every anti-frizz product on the planet. While many are good enough, I always return to my one constant since I discovered back in middle school: John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Hair Serum. (And before anyone loses their mind in the comments section, I buy this $9.99 product with my very own money—though I would never write about anything I don’t truly and honestly like no matter how it came into my possession.)

Lily Cole’s Imaginarium

Finally — the first live action peek of Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus‎ — and it’s packed full of Lily Cole.

The model, who looks more doll-like than ever, plays Valentina, daughter of Doctor Parnassus who’s played by Christopher Plummer. Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell take turns as Tony, collectively make this the most attractive film ever made. Lily’s in the background of at least half the clips, sometimes naked, once in a Valentino red dress, once making out with Heath and always framed by her wild red mane.

Our reaction to this is probably like a twelve-year-old’s to Twilight.

American Idol Models?

lilycolestormmanagement.jpgWell, not exactly. But Simon Fuller, the mega branding mastermind who brought us the Spice Girls, American Idol, and Little Britain, among countless other projects and stars has just bought a 51% stake in London’s Storm Models.

The agency which represents Kate Moss, Jourdan Dunn, Lily Cole, Carla Bruni, and Cate Blanchett has been run by the brother/sister team of Sarah Doukas and Simon Chambers since it started in 1987.

Fuller tells Vogue UK: “With 19 moving more into the world of fashion and style, the opportunity to join forces with Storm and its incredible heritage and dynamic approach to the future, was irresistible. Together we can push the boundaries, blur the lines and redefine what a model agency should be in this fast moving world where fashion is playing an increasingly important role in setting and reflecting culture and tastes.”

As far as fashion goes, his backing of Roland Mouret seems to have worked out pretty well. We can only wonder what sorts of changes he has in store for the agency and its girls.

Alexis Bledel Signs with IMG

alexisbledelsignsIMG.jpgModeling behemoth IMG (home of Kate, Gisele, Daria, the Lilys, and oh-so many more of our favorite girls) has just signed former Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledel to the agency to handle her commercial endorsements - so now she and Little J can hang out at the office?

And we’re excited to see what they’ve got planned.

We were always big fans of Rory and Lorelei and her porcelain complexion and blue eyes are pretty incredible.

Anything that brings her some cool new exposure works for us.

Bring on the campaigns.

London Model Watch

amber le bon.jpgWe produce models as fast as we can, given the fact that you guys steal them away within months.`

We’ve recently lost Agyness, Daisy, Alexa and Karen, so thank goodness our model machine keeps churning out new faces.

Meet Amber Le Bon, daughter of Yasmin and Duran Duran’s Simon LeBon. The combination of her mum’s legs and her dad’s rock star appeal is thoroughly British. And she’s still too young to leave us. It’s no wonder she’s just signed contracts with high street store River Island and Myla, the lingerie brand whose recent ads starred your Lydia Hearst.

Thanks in no small part to her mum’s enviable Alaia collection, she stood out at last night’s Hogan party, even while surrounded by the likes of Beth Ditto, Giles Deacon, Savannah Miller, Lily Cole and Katie Grand.

Lily’s Beauty Ads Out

lily cole for rimmel.jpgLily Cole’s ads for Rimmel, which were announced almost a year ago, have finally hit Rimmel.com.

She poses with her mouth just parted, her hair in the wind, and each and every one of her freckles airbrushed out of existence.

As much as we love a great NSFW editorial with Ms. Cole, this beauty bot shot doesn’t sit quite right.

PS Does anyone else think freckles are completely adorable?!

Model Meeting Protocol

kate moss autograph.jpgScene: I’m walking through the National Hall, looking for my stadium seat at Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label Show.

I have to make my way through a rabid pack of people who are not paparazzi. I’m not sure what they’re doing, or why they’re banded together, or why they’re all young girls.

Suddenly, I realize they’ve descended upon Lily Cole, not you know who, and they’re asking for her autograph.

If, or when, you meet your favorite model, or any model for that matter - would you ask for his or her autograph? We’ve never really understood the concept of an autograph anyway, but it seems all the stranger when applied to models. No one in the office would ever ask anyone to sign a piece of paper, though Natalie can understand asking someone like Kate Moss, who’s more rock star than model anyway and Carson (our new intern!) would just want to talk. When I met Kate, I kind of whimpered hello, and when I saw Doutzen I just gaped - they’re my favorites and yet I never thought about asking for their signature.

So if you’ve got anyone from Stephanie Seymour to Ali Michael in front of you, what do you do?

Viv's Red Label

VIV RED.JPGLast night’s Vivienne Westwood Red Label show was held in National Hall, a giant sports like venue complete with stadium seating.

Lily Cole sat front row while the likes of Daisy Lowe and Alice Dellal insisted on clomping their way down the concrete runway. Jourdan Dunn opened, for the second season in a row, and Jo Wood, ex-wife of Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, closed.

The collection was inspired by school girls and their naughty head mistresses which meant loads of plaid and cleavage-inducing corsets worn with massive over-the-,knee boots made of chintz in golds and pinks, see Tanya D at left.

The clothes were classic, casual Vivienne with some pirate hats and bondage shoes thrown in for good measure. We’ll wait for Paris’ Gold Label show to really rave.

Lily’s Baby Blues

lily cole in rage.jpgLily Cole’s new movie, Rage, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this week.

The murder mystery, which also stars a cross dressing Jude Law, Steve Buscemi, Dame Judi Dench and Eddie Izzard, takes place on the New York fashion scene, or a dramatized version of it at least.

Here’s a clip of one of Lily’s monologues in which she sports a very YSL bob and some covetable liquid eyeliner. In the interview following the clip she muses on blogs and the fashion industry.

She also talks about inner versus outer beauty - something that’s pretty easy to talk about when you look like that.

NY Times Hires Lily Cole

lily cole smirks.jpgRemember last month, when Agyness Deyn “starred” in a short video for The New York Times as a drugged-out goddess of love? Turns out it was the beginning of a trend.

This weekend, the Times posted their second video on T Magazine’s manically excellent website, and guess who was in it?

The original LC, Lily Cole.

She’s appearing as a little sister in the family drama T Takes, which also stars Kate Mara and Charlie Cox. The series is directed by Brody Baker, who has no IMDB profile but does appear on Supreme’s model blog for throwing Josh Hartnett a birthday party.

You can see the series trailer here, and Lily says eight words in it.

Who’ll Be Famous in 2009?

gemma ward in the black balloon.jpgIn our second installment of year-end thinking, we ask you, which models do you think will be famous in 2009?

Britt’s picks:

Lara Stone: So maybe she’s been around for a bit, but she’s just now sort of everywhere. Is it weird that I hope Carine’s Loving-Lara issue puts her on Hollywood’s radar?

Gemma Ward: You probably think she’s famous already, but one more movie role and even my mom can add her to the list of current girls she knows - currently composed of just Stam and Agyness.

Natalie’s:

Arlenis: For the obvious reason of her becoming one of the new faces for Lancome and one of the VS girls, which means you won’t be able to click or turn a page without seeing her face very soon.

Lily Cole: Again, you might think she’s famous, but I think even my non-fashion friends will know Lily’s face once The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Phantasmagoria hit the big screen in the next year.

So, who’d we miss?

Would You Wear a Galabeyah?

lily cole in a caftan which is kind of like a galabeyah so well go with it.jpgI just returned from a ten-day trip in Egypt, before which I peppered Britt with questions about jewelry, scarves and how to get a seller at the Khan down to 20% off whatever price he initially quoted me. Because she has to, she told me everything she knows, but here’s something she forgot to mention: The Galabeyah.

Essentially an Egyptian version of the caftan, you see them everywhere in downtown Cairo, and especially once you start heading south on the Nile. At first, I thought to myself, “Hm, ok.” But by day five, I desperately needed to do my laundry, and so I thought it would make for some interesting pictures if I paired one with my bright red Chucks while my jeans tumbled in the wash.

So I bargained for an indigo-colored one with just a bit of light blue embroidery at the neck, and wore it around for an entire day. The effect, I promise you, was transformative.

Not only was I hassled much less while walking market streets, but the heat didn’t bother me, I felt like I could eat anything I wanted, and I even considered just sleeping in it and waking to another day without changing my clothes (at my travel companion’s behest, I reconsidered).

But here’s something I didn’t see coming: I brought it home. And not only that, I fully intend on wearing it in New York come July. I know what you’re thinking - they’re shapeless, they do nothing for you, if you’re not model-tall you’ll look like you’re just wandering the streets in your childhood nightgown (in fact, you might look like that anyway).

But I say: Add some lapis and silver jewelry, a voluminous braid, bright sandals and sunglasses, and you’ve got a look that (I think) would make an Olsen go “Hmm”.

You say: ?

Cole’s the Coolest?

lily cole.jpgThe end of the year is always full of wacky lists, but this one tops them all.

Company Editor Victoria White, Pearl Lowe, Amiee Berman and Brit PR king Ian Johnson have named the twenty coolest women under thirty in Britain and Lily Cole’s topped the list.

In fact, there are seven models on the list, including Alice Dellal, Alexa Chung, and Daisy Lowe, who came in six places above Agyness Deyn.

Apparently, the judges made an effort to steer clear of the “uber-successful” ladies like Lily Allen, Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller which led to Lily being “the unanimous winner”.

“Everyone on our list has done something incredible with their lives, whether it’s combining a modeling career with university studies, or transforming a hobby into a luxury range.”

Um, ok, sure. But unanimous, really?

We’d have bet money Pearl voted for her daughter.

Tim Walker to Film

tim walker shot .jpgBritish fashion photographer Tim Walker’s just confirmed that he’ll branch out into film in 2009.

He’s the man behind most of Vogue UK’s fairytale-like editorials and a major contributor on Nick Knight’s ShowStudio. You know this almost iconic image of Lily Cole and the December 08 spread starring Karen Elson and Tim Burton.

His short film will debut this spring with a follow up feature length film slated for Fall 2009. No word yet on plot lines and characters but we do expect fantasy and would love for Gemma to land a role.

Between this and Tom Ford’s movie and Vogue’s Sundance debut, fashion’s officially crossed over.

Just Get Naked! No Excuses, Please

french playboy2 1.jpgToday, we found out that Carol Alt will be posing for Playboy. Weirdly, this is not surprising - we’ve been tracking the naked chick trend for a while, ever since French Playboy started to get all high fashion on us.

Nakedness doesn’t bother us (obviously) - we think you should be able to take off your clothes as you please. But what’s with all the excuses?

Carol says she’s taking it off to send the message, “eat healthy, look healthy and be healthy.” And Lily says she wrapped her knee-socked legs around a plush teddy in the name of “art”. Neither mention paychecks, but then again, neither mention the word “porn”, so we guess it evens out.

But when you think about it, models and famous faces have been baring it all for PETA for about a decade, which is obviously for a good cause, but would we think so if it was Traci Lords baring her business on every newsstand claiming it’s for the animals?

Because the only message we’re picking up on is that nudity is great as long as your publicist has a boatload of excuses and maybe a cause behind it.

And on a not-really-side note, where the hell is James Franco’s PETA ad? Because then we might really believe that people are earnestly using nudity to say something other than that tits sell.
