No, You Can’t

mio destino crosses a line maybe.jpgWe’re bombarded with pitches throughout the day, some random, some funny, some awesome and some, like this, that are so awkward and inappropriate, we simply must share.

Actually, we’ve never been so compelled to share.

Behold the graphic from Mia Destino, a lingerie company banking on both the success of our new president and everyone’s desire to look like a can-can girl.

The tag-line for their Yes We Can-Can lingerie set?

“Because if Obama CAN - so CAN you!”

See what they’re doing there?

Natalia is Like Kate (or, Elle)

natalia vodianova for etam.jpgWe knew Natalia Vodianova was the face of French lingerie brand Etam this season, and the partnership was obviously pretty serious since they launched a website dedicated to the Supernova smirking in her panties.

But apparently, the Russian doll’s been moonlighting as a designer for the brand, too, having hosted her own runway show for her lingerie designs, Natalia pour Etam, yesterday at the Ritz in Paris.

Natalia is set to design a new range every season for the next three years, while she serves as brand ambassador. There hasn’t been another major model turned designer other than Kate and Elle MacPherson - who also designs lingerie, though under her own company - in a while (other than the odd guest bag or Christy’s yoga line), but we wonder if Natalia has enough influence to start a whole new type of designer crazy - Model designers to take over celebrities?

Back to the Limited?

bendon the limited look from wwd.jpgBendon, the New Zealand-based lingerie company, is coming to America. Except, they’re coming via The Limited, which we’re all familiar with via trips to Limited Too in fifth grade. And apparently, when we buy lingerie from Elle MacPherson’s Intimates (a personal favorite) and Stella McCartney (a browsing favorite), we’re really buying Bendon re-packaged and repriced via licensing deals.

There are two interesting points to be taken from these facts.

1. That The Limited’s version of Bendon will retail between $35 and $38 for bras, and $14 to $16 for underwear - less than half the price of Elle’s versions, and nowhere near the price stratosphere of Stella’s - meaning, The Limited might pose some stiff competition in the lingerie department very soon, and this may or may not be related to the fact that The Limited is no longer owned by Limited Brands, the parent company of the very overpriced Victoria’s Secret, and so now they’re free to expand in that market.

2. That The Limited has been around since forever, and just now they’ve decided to put out their own lingerie, right when Brian Reyes has decided to do the same, and right when Marc’s decided to put out his first full swimwear line under Marc by Marc. All new ventures in a decidedly shaky market / economy, all new ventures including itty bitty non-clothes.

Coincidence? Or has everyone decided that true shoppers will find a way to drop at least $50 every couple weeks and have just figured out the best way to truly service the price point?

*Editor’s Note: Sorry! Changed that fact at the end of point 1 - The Limited is no longer owned by Limited Brands!

Economy Shrinks, Designers Expand

marc by marc bikini.jpgMarket news these days usually goes like this:

Mid-tier company X’s same-store sales down 20%. Fast fashion brand Y’s sales down 2%.

So what are moderately (this is very relatively speaking) priced lines to do? Expand, apparently.

Today brings news that Brian Reyes will expand into lingerie for next Fall, and Marc Jacobs will launch his first full line of swimwear for Marc by Marc, under a licensing agreement with Swimwear Anywhere Inc., the same company that designs swimsuits for Carmen Marc Valvo for much cheaper than the designer name suggests.

Some people might wonder why designers would sink money into new ventures in such uncertain shopping times, but we think this is probably a good way for people to drop $150 on a cute purchase and still feel like they’re on the gainful side.

Because the Brian Reyes / Marc by Marc girl will probably find a way to shop no matter what’s happening in the stock market, so it makes sense to accommodate her new spending allowance, no?

Don’t Linger, Think Lingerie

maggie in ap.jpgWe know not everyone can make it to the opening of the Barneys Warehouse sale today, so here’s a shopping tip:

Agent Provocateur is having an online sale, so a lot of their cutest stuff is 50% off, and in a good range of sizes, too.

We suggest the Frida outfit, worked by former AP body Maggie Gyllenhaal, at left.

It channels an old-time coquette kind of look just enough to be cute, not sad.

Puppy not included.

Film noir hair highly suggested.

Sale at Journelle!

elle macpherson intimates undies.jpgWho: Journelle, a small lingerie shop near Union Square

What: Everything on sale (up to 50% off) - Elle MacPherson Intimates, Dessous, The Lake and Stars, Jimmyjane, Eres, Wolford…

Where: 3 East 17th St (between Fifth and Union Square West), 212.255.7800

When: All of next week, from the 14th to the 20th

Why: Because it’s adorable, because you can get a good bra for a lot cheaper, and because (according to reader Ni), they have huge dressing rooms and even give you cashmere robes to wear so you can flash your friends patiently waiting outside to talk you out of that corset thing.

Should we also mention it’s right by Rosa Mexicana?

I See London, I See France…

kate moss see through dress.jpgIt’s no secret that we heart Kate Moss. Usually she can do no wrong, but when she recently stepped out wearing a dress that literally showed off all her assets, we were surprisingly put off. And it’s not just Kate - lately we’ve noticed quite a few chicks on the street baring all in lingerie.

We understand lingerie inspired looks. We love a pretty slip dress or camisole for night. But that’s not what’s going on. The look we’ve been seeing is to actually wear what could pass for pajamas - in public. Even Shopbop’s encouraging us to go through the day in hot pants and a tank top!

We understand they’re comfy. But so are sweatpants, baggy t-shirts and yoga pants, and we aren’t wearing those to work anytime soon. Plus the whole thing is a little bit of a fashion TMI. We’re not sure we want the whole block knowing what we look like in our underwear.

We’re not saying the look doesn’t have potential to be cute - See Jil Sander and Marc Spring ‘08 for inventive and sophisticated applications of sheer. But for the regular girl, with a regular life off the runway, is it really acceptable?

How can there be at once a stigma against leaving the house in a sweat suit, but not against stepping outside in a see-through slip? Is it that outrageously comfortable clothes are acceptable if they maintain a degree of sexiness? Or is this the Juicy Couture sweat suit of 2008?
