Mid-Day Snack

loudoillonvanessabruno.jpgPicture This: There’s no video yet from Vanessa Bruno’s short film, just stills. But we’ll take Lou Doillon any way we can get her. {Fashionologie}

And They’re Off: Recession be damned, there will always be couture. Even if Anna isn’t there to watch it happen. {FWD}

With One Notable Exception: A “restructuring” plan has effectively wiped out most of the jobs at Christian Lacroix. {WWD}

Mid-Day Snack

katemossandmarcjacobs2009metball.jpgKate Reigns: Just in case you thought Kate Moss would ever be less sartorially influential, think again. Here’s a rundown of all the resort shows inspired by the super. If anyone can convince us to wear gold lamé, well, it’s obviously Kate. {StyleFile}

Oh Goody: Vanessa Bruno’s making a short film staring Lou Doillon. Stephanie Di Giusto will direct and there will be a screening in July before it’s available online. {Fashionologie}

Beam Me Up Scotty: Band Of Outsider’s Scott Sternberg answers W’s questions on the CFDAs and NY vs LA. He says that if Paris Hilton tried to wear his clothes he’d tell her, “That the moon is on fire and she better get outside and help put it out right this instant.” As if we could love him more. {W}

Same Old, Same Old: We are creatures of habit, but we’re still not sure we could wear one dress, and one dress only, for a whole year. Having the same thing for lunch each afternoon, not a problem. {Guardian UK}

Theo Richards Switches It Up

theodora richards to wilhelmina.jpgTheodora Richards has left IMG to join her sister Alexandra on Wilhelmina’s roster.

IMG plays home to all the rock star kids: Lou Doillon, Julia Roitfeld, Liv Tyler, Elettra Rossellini, Daisy Lowe (yes, we use the term rock star liberally), but the gorgeous blond Richards sisters, daughters of Rolling Stone Keith and model Patti Hansen, are now holding down the Wilhelmina fort.

Theo’s starred in ads for Tommy Hilfiger and Roberto Cavalli for H&M, but maybe, with a package deal for the two sisters, they’ll get to join their dad in the realm of luxury advertising.

A family portrait for LV? Sounds do-able.

Nina Ricci, "So Long Olivier."

nina ricci aw09 .JPGI held on tight to my Nina Ricci invitation all day.

Hard invitations are gold in Paris - no invite, no luck - and I wasn’t going to miss Olivier Theyskens’ last Nina Ricci collection for anything.

Unfortunately, my cab driver, or the traffic ahead of us, didn’t care that I had to get there, and so, at 7:27 I bolted out of the car and ran, desperately looking for a familiar face or anyone significantly underdressed for the Paris cold. Finally, I stumbled past a very serious security gate and into my seat with seconds to spare.

Paparazzi descended upon the front row, a hippie-headbanded Milla Jovovich was sandwiched in between Carine and Lou Doillon (side note: Earlier today, an editor suggested that I remind them of Charlotte Gainsbourg to which I almost actually said, “I die” out loud. Time to stop quoting Rachel Zoe in my head and time for said editor to get glasses), with Leigh Lezark and Emannuelle Alt on each end. Five camera flashes and the lights went out, a model started walking and the music clicked on - in that order.

The clothes were gorgeous, of course, but the shoes were literally breathtaking. The ball of the foot rested on at least a five inch platform while the heel ascended another few inches, without an actual heel which made it look like the girls were floating on air. Gowns came with giant sheer black ruffles, hot pink and turquoise glitter and beaded floral trains. The red jacket and long skirt caused the audience to spontaneously combust in applause mid-collection (something I’ve never seen, Natalie once at ThreeAsfour) though front-row grins lingered for the duration of the show.

Though I’d corrected at least three people throughout the day, “But it’s not confirmed that he’s leaving! He might make it!,” there was no questioning Olivier’s wave good-bye and the enthusiastic but sad standing ovation.

Lou Doillon to Retail

lou doillon looking girlier than usual.jpgShe’s modeled for Givenchy and Miu Miu, designed a denim range for Lee Cooper, and dutifully walked too many red carpets to explain.

Now? WWD tucked a bit about her - the inimitable Lou Doillon, daughter of Jane Birkin - into a longer story this morning, that the French / English style icon is opening her own concept store in Paris later this year.

She plans for the shop to be a French / English crossover, like herself, and to mix fashion and literature in the 11th arrondissement.

We’re not totally sure what that’ll look like, but it’s probably safe to expect some Doillon-sanctioned denim and maybe a vintage Birkin or two in the mix.

Anne Valerie's Mesh

AVH SS09 .JPGIt says something about a designer when the front row is full of notable buyers but lacking in especially noticeable press.

We’re not sure of its official meaning, but we’d guess it’s something to do with the designer making clothes women want to wear instead of striving to produce the next great editorial gem.

So it makes sense that Anne Valerie Hash’s collection actually looked comfortable despite its beauty. She twisted jersey into all sorts of sexy knots for yes, more jumpsuits. Lou Doillon, who sat front row with Leigh Lezark, will probably throw one under her leather jacket within the week.

And if you happen to be in the market for a metal mesh vest or tank, Anne’s got you covered.

Whitney Art Party: People Watcher’s Paradise

dior couture shoes.jpgWhat we saw last night, in between looking at the art, dancing under the disco ball and stalking Moby:

- Doutzen Kroes, frustrated, spelling her name to a PR girl who couldn’t figure out why she was there and if she should let her in. Also, she’s the most stunning, perfect human being we have ever seen in our lives. We are not exagerrating.

- Sean Lennon dancing with an Irina look-alike, who definitely wasn’t Irina.

- Barbara Bush dancing with Derek Blasberg, who we thought was Jack McCullough of Proenza, but wasn’t.

- Model kickball. OK, not really but Coco, Behati, Hana, Doutzen, and Elettra, (all in skintight, envy inducing Herve but Coco), huddled in a circle while their dates/friends huddled in a protective outter circle while Rachel Zoe tried to eye her way in.

- The girl in back of us in the bathroom line, asking Lou Doillon, who was in back of her, where she was from, why she was in New York and how she finagled her way into the party. Weird, because Lou is so beautiful it’s kind of obvious she belongs in all the cool places.

- Vogue’s Stephanie LaCava rocking these Dior shoes (left) like they were her favorite Repetto ballet flats.

- Rachel Bilson, waiting in line for champagne, just like us, checking out Natalie. Yes, Rachel, she actually is smaller than you.

Quote of the Day

“I never comb my hair or make anything pretty. When people look too beautiful, it’s too easy. I know I’m dressed wrong if the businessman turns his head. But I like to think that after an hour of sitting next to me on the train, he’d look. I’d have grown on him.” - Lou Doillon, to the Sunday New York Times.

Lou Doillon Likes the Top

lou.jpg We’re a little worried by this video of Lou Doillion , even though she comes across as incredibly intelligent, very cool, and extremely deliberate in her style.

The scary part is the top hat, and the fact that she claims “The Artful Doger is my ultimate style icon and I always strive to look like that… the blazer I’m wearing can also perfectly fit my six-year-old son… I find nothing more erotic than when a woman bears her wrists.”

The film was made to promote Lou’s new line with Lee Cooper denim, which (of course) isn’t available in America yet.

Of course, those top hats are at most costume stores - and so if you’re thinking of going for the magician look that Lou’s got happening, it shouldn’t be too hard.

We’re bringing it up as a classic example of what a “style icon” can pull off, that the rest of us really can’t. Much like Kate Moss in Ugg boots and underwear, sometimes the truly, truly, truly outrageous flairs of the rich, famous, and beautiful are a one-shot deal.

Of course, with Phantasmagoria and two other Alice in Wonderland movies debuting soon, maybe this is just the beginning of a new hat trick (though our hopes say no).
