You must’ve read about the unemployed twins from Ohio in this weekend’s New York Times by now. If not, you can here, here or here.
Anyway, this one’s for them.
On Wednesday, October 28th, Ladies Lotto, a networking group for professional women, is hosting a panel called Behind the Beast.
A panel of experts, including the Editorial Director of Refinery29, the Fashion Editor of Self, a publicist, a trend forecaster and even an MTV VJ will talk about how to break into the industry, despite the tough economic times, and what to do once you’re in.
The moderated discussion, and the cocktails after, will give you a chance to ask questions of a pretty diverse group of women and gain some insight into both magazines and blogs, as well as the PR side of the industry.
The event’s at the Tribeca Grand; it’s $15 and you have until October 27 to RSVP to rsvpnyc@ladieslotto.com.
To be honest, I’d pretty much forgotten that Kanye West was going to do his own line, Pastelle. But apparently it’s finally arrived.
At this point, the man’s ego and mouth pretty much overshadow any professional endeavor he takes on. In spite of myself, I still love his music, but that’s about it—well, when he doesn’t use auto-tune, that is. Does anyone out there care about what this front row fixture has to bring to the design table? Because there’s certainly nothing super exciting in the pictures online.
And actually I’m more surprised that there wasn’t some massive publicity campaign surrounding the launch. I just happened up on the story on MTV.com. Did Kanye really decide to stop talking now? Weird.
On Tuesday night the second season of The City premiered on MTV. I’ve been stewing over the new episode since it aired, and I’m not sure why I still watch a show that never fails to frustrate me.
I’m a recent college grad and current industry intern, who has spent hours sending in dozens of internship applications only to get one response. I know what it’s like to spend an entire day in the fashion closet of a major publication, and how grueling it is to write up entire racks of clothes and then wheel them around town. Conveniently, none of the unpleasant aspects of fashion internships are ever depicted on the show.
By now it’s no secret that much of the action on The City is staged, but its classification as a “reality show” blurs the line between the real and the fake. Younger girls who are in the target demographic might not realize that breaking into the fashion industry isn’t so simple, and doesn’t provide instant perks. To be perfectly honest, growing up in Virginia and going to school at Tulane, I didn’t know the full scope of what a lot of jobs in the industry required until I had one. And I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in that fact.

We’ve interviewed stylists and editors and publicists and designers, but we’ve never entered the world of blogging, or even the internet for a Life With.
So welcome to the world of Who What Wear.
We know you love their site. We love their site. And I made it a priority to sit down with Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power while in LA at the end of July to learn how they left the world of print and moved onto the internet. And more importantly, how they ended up putting together one of the most successful fashion sites among the millions.
Inside, how they blew up, where they’re going and what the launch of their book means
to them.

Flashing Lights: It’s not that we don’t love a good picture of Lindsay & co., it’s just that Giovanna & co. make for much better paparazzi shots. {Fashionologie}
OMG & LOL: Kelly Bensimon to W’s blog, “I love Navajo and I love the idea of taking Pocahontas out of the kayak and putting her into the disco. Everyone knows that she’s had enough in her little canoe and now she’s out and having fun in the disco.” Kelly Bensimon to StyleList, “The bad thing about Pocahontas is that she’s, like, in the kayaks. So I took her out of the kayak and into the disco so she could have a little fun.”{StyleList & Jezebel}
Ten Times Fast: Lucas Ossendrijver from Lanvin Homme is both hot and talented. Here are pictures of him, his studio, his team and the shop. {theSelby}
Is the New? Jewelry designers Pamela Love and Arielle de Pinto are staging their own presentations next month. Meanwhile, two of our favorites, Bliss Lau and Eddie Borgo are working on exciting designer collaborations. {Style}

We just came across this article on MTV (via The Australian) about a legal battle brewing between pop star Katy Perry and and Australian designer also named Katie Perry.
The “ie” Katie (born Katie Jane Perry) has been designing and selling a clothing collection online and in various locations in Oz for about two years. She filed a trademark application in September and was rightfully freaked out when she received a load of paperwork from a law firm representing the “y” Katy - asking her to withdraw her application and basically, from what we understand, stop using her own given name for her business.
This sounds absolutely absurd to us. It’s the girl’s name. And as designer Katie said to the newspaper, “”I love my business. I’m not going to give it away without a fight, either,” she said. “I’m not trying to become a singer. I’m not pretending to be her. This is my income. And it’s the livelihood of my contractors as well.”
While we’re not surprised that Katy Perry is seemingly batting around the idea of a fashion line (God help us all!), we don’t think she should be able to block anyone from using the name they were given just because she’s famous.
Fight the good fight, Katie! Maybe you’ll be able to save us all from sushi dresses.
As much as pop culture invades every part of fashion these days, we’re not usually the go-to site for MTV coverage. But this WWD retrospective got me thinking about all the fashion-y things I’ve loved and lost on the once very stylin’ network over the years.
Of course, there were the awesome first two incarnations of House of Style which furthered my youthful obsession with models. Cindy was beyond. And I regularly dreamed about being best friends with Shalom and Amber.
But there were so many other style moments that seem to be missing in this era of Lauren, Heidi, et al. Perhaps because it’s hard to even catch a video on the channel.
Because its not like the entire music industry has lost it’s style, just that MTV kinda has.

Bravo picked up Kelly Cutrone’s reality show in February and now, they’ve given it a name: Kell on Earth.
Here’s what they say about the series:
Kelly Cutrone has been called one of the “coolest, scariest and New York-iest people ever” and, judging from her frank demeanor and fashion world credibility, it’s easy to see why. Bravo takes a no-holds-barred look into the life of one of America’s most legitimate tastemakers as she balances running her wildly successful fashion PR company, People’s Revolution, with being a single mother and one of New York’s most notable women about town.
We’re wondering, logistically, how this will work. Now that Whitney’s Kelly’s ‘employee’ and Whitney’s followed everywhere by her own MTV camera crews, who decides who gets to film what? What if there’s major drama at People’s Revolution and MTV wants it for The City but Bravo’s determined to get it for Kell on Earth? You can’t just share dramatic tension.
Clearly, the only solution is to give the dueling camera crews their own reality show - name suggestions?
A while back, we noticed that Lauren Conrad’s Collection was curiously tucked into the DVF section of Bloomingdale’s in Soho. We’ve also recently noticed that everyone’s so taken with scenes involving Olivia Palermo on The City, that the name “Spencer” has ceased to draw the same level of ire as in summers past.
So it looks like the DVF empire has squashed LC’s before it ever really got off the ground. Not only is her show finally ending while The City becomes socially acceptable for conversation (ok, with some people), but it looks like her line has gone kaput, too.
The New York Post says it’s because of “the economic climate” but we think this is just what happens when little fish jump into the Pacific Ocean, camera crew or not.
If the mere existence of The City didn’t make this one obvious, allow the cold hard facts to stand alone:
Lauren Conrad is leaving The Hills after season five, which premieres March 30th.
No word on exactly what the show will become without its north star, but here’s the better question - what exactly is Lauren going to do with her life after being (arguably) reality TV’s best known experiment?
Our best guesses:

Early reports naming Chanel Iman as Bar Rafaeli’s co-host for MTV’s revival of House of Style appear to be true.
We can’t imagine how she’s had the time between walking back-to-back shows in New York, London, Milan, and probably now Paris. (We bet Coco’s been giving her tips.)
Unless, of course, the first House of Style episodes revolve exclusively around backstage shots of Fashion Week - in which case, how does Bar figure into it?
Bar Rafaeli just got the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, and she gushes to Time.com all about it.
But more importantly, when asked about her future plans near the end of the interview, she says this:
“I’m shooting a show for MTV; we’re starting right after all the parties for Sports Illustrated. And then I have work, work, work, work. The show is called House of Style. They used to do it before and now they’re bringing it back. So it’s very exciting.”
There you have it. Now if someone can corner Chanel later this week (we’re on it), then we can all know for sure just exactly who’s taking Cindy’s spot.
In case anyone else sort of came around on The City after Olivia shut down Whitney over talking about her friends’ hook up situation in the DVF offices (“Whitney, you’re an adult. You’re what, 23 years old? You’re not in high school”), take note:
MTV’s picked up the show for a second season, which could mean more fun quotes from Olivia, but definitely more cameras at Fashion Week.
Not exactly win-win, but maybe Diane will show up on camera again?
Remember back when the letters “MTV” actually meant what they stood for, and music was the entertainment of choice, rather than broadcasting the crushing of people’s lives? Don’t you wish you could have it back?
Well, don’t hold your breath. MTV’s just announced yet another reality show, this time having to do with fashion, which apparently is unrelated to their modeling reality show, Model Makers, which we’re still hoping never makes it on air.
The new show doesn’t have a name yet, but it calls for “all artists, designers, tastemakers, trend spotters, and anyone who thinks they know the fashion industry like the back of their hand” but who “don’t yet have on-the-job experience in fashion, but an understanding of what the public wants and how to give it to them” to apply for the chance to “work directly with a world-renowned fashion designer, entertainment mogul and street icon” to eventually “participate in the creation of a fashion line.”
Which may as well read: “If you’re completely out of your mind, have a vague idea that you want to work in something called “fashion” and are downright enthusiastic about making an ass of yourself with other equally delusional people on national television only to cut your blurry dreams short by giving everyone an unshakable, reality TV reference of yourself which will always stand in place for what should be your actual reputation, please, sign up.”
Interested parties can e-mail MTVcasting4fash…@gmail.com, parties who just want a little laugh with their lunch can read the full release after the jump.
PS. Does anyone not think the mogul in question is Puff Daddy?

Looks like Rihanna has some competition in the race for most fashion-forward starlet -
Beyonce arrived at the MTV Europe Music Awards this week wearing none other than British babe Gareth Pugh, Spring 09. Then, she changed into one of his Fall 08 looks to perform (left).
Needless to say, we’re impressed.
Though to be fair, we should probably point at that the first time Pugh appeared on MTV was probably when Ashlee Simpson wore one of his Spring 08 dresses in her video, “Outta My Head” last winter.
But who’s counting.
Exactly two months ago, we told you about Whitney’s departure from People’s Revolution to DVF, and from there, it came out that she was getting her own show.
Here’s the first clip from it, The City, which debuts December 29th, conveniently placed in the time continuum that is Winter Break for so much of MTV’s bread and butter, just a few days after those new Christmas toys lose their shine - not a bad effort on DVF’s part either, to try and brand themselves with the younger set who have yet to actually buy their first wrap dress. Perhaps there really is a television-related reason for having positioned Lauren’s clothes in the midst of Diane’s at Bloomingdale’s - to show young girls on camera perusing not just Laurent’s duds, but Diane’s, too?
Anyway, here’s our early verdict - This looks exactly like The Hills, except now, you could potentially make a game of spotting where the cameras take her on the grid. On the upside, maybe Diane will make an appearance.
Which British metal progeny / MTV darling / front-row fixture has a little something planned for Marc by Marc’s backstage? Apparently, she’s none too pleased a certain make-up artist keeps flirting with her boyfriend and isn’t scared of confrontation…
