Happiness is a Great Handbag

yslroady.jpgWe all know the Roady is the newest member of the YSL family to cause a commotion among handbag addicts. It’s already being toted around by the likes of Rihanna, Rachel Bilson, Leighton and of course, MK. I have admired the hobo carryall from a distance on their arms, and on mine in my daydreams.

The bag already comes in a bunch of colors and patents, but YSL is taking it to the next level in New York and Los Angeles by offering clients the chance to purchase a customized Roady for the holidays.

From November 19th through December 1st, boutiques will have artisans on-hand to customize the handles of your Roady. You can choose from a bunch of different skins and colors, for a total of 29 different handle options. The handles will be changed on-site and ready for pick-up the next day! And if you’re just dying to monogram your bag, you can do that too, for free even.

More on pricing and options after the jump!

Isaac Mizrahi Parties for Cheesecake

isaacs qvc tv wall.jpg“Are you stalking me,” asked Isaac Mizrahi last night when I told him how much I loved hearing him speak at the 92nd Street Y a few weeks ago?

“Oh my god no,” I whimpered as the color drained from my face.

“Kidding!! I’m SO glad you enjoyed it, that’s so great to hear! It was so fun and I’m so happy you loved it,” he squealed in delight.

While my heart slowly started beating again we talked cheesecake and tartan and the impossibility of guest cheesecake designers at the launch of his new line for QVC, Isaac Mizrahi Live. The party was held on a soundstage with a cubed centerpiece made from TVs - tiny old portable TVs, giant flat screens, a rainbow of TV variety - playing Isaac’s colorful show.

I’ve never watched QVC (alas, no TV), but by the end I found myself determined to own a tartan Isaac blanket. I was not, however, determined to tell Ashley Olsen (who huddled in a corner with her sister and publicist) that I loved hearing her speak at the Y, too. One stalking insinuation’s enough for a night (a lifetime really).

Another Day, Another Olsen Story

olsen-boye2.jpgphoto courtesy WWDThis morning we have more details on the Olsen’s latest venture, a juniors line for JCPenney called Olsenboye. According to WWD, the collection will be available at 600 stores in February, but will make a limited debut online and in 50 key locations on November 6th.

Twitter, Facebook, and other social media tools will play a huge part in marketing the line to teens. And today there’s supposed to be an Olsenboye truck out around New York selling merch and handing out cupcakes and balloons. (Let us know if you spot it!)

The line will be sized from 0 to 15 and priced from $20-$50. Ashley says, “Olsenboye is an extension of the Dualstar brand and we feel this collaboration complements and strengthens our business portfolio, delivering trend-based fashion at affordable prices.”

We just wonder what Cintra Wilson will think.

UPDATE: We just heard the “treat truck” will be in Union Square today, Herald Square tomorrow, and Washington Square Park on Thursday.

Isaac, Ashley & Robin at the 92nd Street Y

92y robin ashley isaac.jpgJoyce Culver, 92nd Street Y“Fashion advertisements are hateful,” said Isaac Mizrahi at tonight’s 92nd Street Y panel discussion on the future of fashion, “but they work.”

Glamour
’s Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive moderated the talk between The Washington Post’s Robin Givhan, Ashley Olsen and Isaac. The group discussed Michelle Obama, the economy, Ralph Lauren’s ad scandal, fast fashion and the fate of platform heels while Mary-Kate Olsen and Justin Bartha cheered from a few rows back.

Robin and Isaac spent the first ten minutes relishing the First Lady’s effect on the fashion industry. Robin heralded the example she’s setting “for women over thirty with busy careers and families who feel disenfranchised from fashion,” while Isaac finds her balance of mass and high fashion “so inspirational.”

Cindi asked the group why the fashion industry is so hated and Robin brilliantly responded that people have no problem condescending to fashion because it’s a women’s industry.

“No one ever says spending thousands of dollars on season tickets for football is a waste of money, but spending $5000 on a dress…” to which Isaac almost jumped out of his chair in agreement.

“Right on! Misogyny rears its ugly head again!”

B and b meets Bloomies

bumble and bloomingdales.jpgWho wouldn’t want Mary-Kate Olsen’s hair?

Right. That’s what we thought. You might think it’s impossible to achieve without a stylist by your side, but don’t despair, we’re here to help. Or Bumble & bumble’s here to help. This Monday, October 19, from noon to 2 pm and 4 to 7 pm they’re kicking off their new Bb.StylingBar and in-house shop at Bloomingdale’s flagship store on 59th.

One of their editorial stylists (and MK’s go-to hair guy) Rolando Beauchamp will be on site doing live makeovers featuring looks from Bumble’s “styling menu.” He’ll style one model’s hair over and over using Bumble products to teach shoppers how to achieve the different looks. Onlookers who want a more hands-on experience can walk in and get a fresh look for just $35.

Through Olsen-Colored Glasses

the row sunglasses.jpgphoto courtesy WWDWhat’s as important to an Olsen as leather jackets and white t-shirts?

Sunglasses, duh.

The twins, who’ve grown Elizabeth & James with shoes and jewelry this past year, are ready to expand The Row. Instead of starting with bags or accessories, they’ve done sunnies.

Mary Kate told WWD, “Designing eyewear was definitely more complicated than we thought, and of course we wanted to be extremely hands-on.”

But they did manage to choose four frames, including the ones at left, in collaboration with Linda Farrow. They’ll launch this spring, starting just under $400, and sell alongside the twins’ clothes at Barneys and Bergdorf.

We Love Your Photo Editor

janebirkiniloveyourstyle.jpgWe just received a copy of Amanda Brooks’ new book (out September 15), I Love Your Style. And while we haven’t had a chance to really read through it, we are pretty much dying over the pictures which seem worth the cost of the book alone.

The book breaks down style types into six categories: Classic, Bohemian, High Fashion, Street, Minimal, and Eclectic. And inside we found pretty much every stylish person we’ve ever obsessed over either caught on the street, at parties, in films or just wherever they’re looking the most perfect. From Jackie O to Carolyn Bessette, Ali McGraw to MK & A, to John and Yoko, Chloe Sevigny, Jane Birkin, Carine, Anna, Kate and everyone in between.

Seriously, there are tons of famously iconic moments along with loads we hadn’t seen before. I’m taking it home for the long weekend to get some much needed Fashion Week inspiration.

It’s kind of like a giant US Weekly for the fashion set. Delicious indeed.

Fashion Week

Week of the Dolls

mary kate and ashley to london.jpgOh no.

When designers and their commercially successful brands started heading back to London Fashion Week in honor of the British Fashion Council’s 25th Anniversary, our first concern was the probable influx of international editors — the stuffy kind who usually skip London because it’s way too fun and way too crazy.

But now Grazia’s given us a whole other reason to whine. They’re reporting a “planned mass showbiz exodus” to Topshop Unique’s front row. And the word “mass” isn’t being used lightly, rumored so far are Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen, Olivia Palermo, Anne Hathaway, the Olsens, Whitney Port, Kate Bosworth and Lourdes Ciccone.

Life With...

Life With Rolando! Part I

rolando pull image.jpgSorry for the minor Life With gap - we’ve been busy!

We’re getting back in the swing of things, so meet Rolando Beauchamp.

He’s a Bumble & bumble super stylist who does both editorial and runway work. And oh yeah, he styles Mary-Kate Olsen’s hair for most major events in New York.

I fell for him backstage at Vivienne Westwood’s AW09 Gold Label show in Paris this past March while we both kind of passed out from the joy of being in a basement with Dame Viv, Pam Anderson and a bunch of models for a few hours. He’s vivacious, friendly and so fun to talk to. So when I wanted a Life With a stylist, he was my first choice.

We sat down to talk hair (obviously), growing up on the Lower East Side in the 60’s, Olsens, divas and his dream gig (are you there Carine?).

You know the drill. Part II tomorrow!

Life With Mr. Mickey!

life with mr mickey.jpgMickey Boardman, aka Mr. Mickey, is the Editorial Director, and basically the face of Paper Magazine.

The man’s one of the busiest people I’ve ever met - and yet he positively bubbles over with enthusiasm for his job and the people he works with. The first time I met him, in an elevator at Milk Studios at one of the first fashion events I ever went to, he told me I was funny. In Paris last month, he gave me his ticket to John Galliano and introduced me to Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Needless to say, I love him.

So our Life With session turned into more than just a what-do-you-do-all-day interview. We dove into topics like his love for India, his devotion to various charities and the highlights of his sixteen-year career at Paper - the Olsens are involved, so is DVF.

His goal? To host Mr. Gay Bombay, but for now there are photo shoots to plan, web meetings to conduct and a snack run to the local deli wherein lives a fat cat lovingly christened Candy Cats Price.

Zandra Rhodes For M & S

olsen zandra rhodes marks spencer.jpgZandra Rhodes, the fuchsia-haired eccentric British designer, is designing a capsule collection for Marks & Spencer.

Zandra says, “I’ve always found prints are so easy to wear they don’t show marks very much, they make you feel wonderful. It’s great to see my things out and I can’t wait, I can see people wearing them with big hats!”

So of course the line, swimsuits, silk dresses, caftans and jumpsuits plus lingerie and accesssories, is covered in brightly colored prints. And everything’s priced between $9 and $130, you can buy it online or in stores starting May 7th, which means pretty much anyone can get a piece of the legendary Brit woman.

Zandra, who was the star of the British fashion industry in the 70s fell off the radar for a bit before resurfacing with a full runway collection in 2006 and then a collection with MAC, a tribute to her own colorful make-up ways and a shout out in Influence, where Mary Kate mentions she’s obsessed with collecting vintage Zandra caftans.

But vintage Zandra bathing suits? These are a much better option.

Barneys Subtle Ode to Olsen

enikos row.jpgWe’ve always been intrigued by Mary-Kate and Ashley’s adamant choice to remain invisible from The Row.

They’ll make public appearances for Elizabeth and James and talk about it in the press, but when it comes to their $300 t-shirt line they didn’t even advertise until this season and they refuse to let themselves be too publicly associated with it.

But the retailers who are determined to sell their line through this recession can’t help but push a little bit of Olsen into the leather jackets and cotton tees. The Spring 09 editorial-like, giant size Barneys catalog was shot by Patrick Demarchelier and stars a string of current top models rocking head to toe runway looks.

On the last page Eniko wears The Row, with cleaned up Olsen hair, over-sized shades, perfectly chunky Louboutin platforms and for extra emphasis, a white paper coffee cup.

The twins might not want to be the face of The Row, they might want their clients to buy their line based on quality and design expertise, but Barneys knows it takes more than that to sell a $550 white v-neck.
