H&M Throws Sonia Rykiel A Parade

sonia rykiel hm ads.jpgAs H&M gets older and wiser, their collaboration launches get bigger and better.

Stella McCartney launched her line with a Gwyneth Paltrow and Dita Von Teese attended bash in an old schoolhouse, Matthew Williamson rocked a ship in the Hudson River with Grace Jones and now, Sonia Rykiel will celebrate her collection for the Swedish mega-brand with a parade and runway show in Paris on December 1.

It’ll be in the Grand Palais, home to Chanel’s runway blow-outs, and feature both the lingerie, debuting for holiday and the knitwear which launches next spring.

No word yet on who will sit front row, but given the star power of Sonia’s 40th Anniversary bash, we have big expectations. And with Lara, Caroline and Anne in the ads, we expect big models, too.

Rent-A-Proenza

renttherunway.jpgOh the horrible things we’d do for a piece of Proenza or Valli.

Thankfully, we can keep it civil via Rent the Runway; they let you rent what you want without hassle or potential jail time.

The site’s an online community where shoppers can rent designer dresses ranging in price from $50-$200. After signing up for an invite you can browse through everything from Doo.Ri to Brian Reyes, Malandrino to Matthew Williamson which means that even though you’re determined to make it through the holidays without buying a new dress, you don’t have to wear the one you wore last year.

They’ll deliver same-day in New York City and next-day everywhere else and if that’s not easy enough, they’ll even send you two sizes on your first rental, so you don’t have to worry if your temporary Tuleh will be just right.

There goes the only-wear-once problem.

London’s Burning

cindy omega.jpg“Geez”, muttered a friend Wednesday night. We’re standing in a jam packed club - not even a famous one - heaving with human traffic and queueing for £14 drinks. “What recession?”

Indeed what recession — it’s certainly not in London. After a manic LFW, one would expect everything to calm down for a moment, for the money and champagne to stop flowing. Instead, we’ve experienced a pent up demand to party - and wear the clothes \ we so innocently bought during fashion month.

The action’s hot and heavy: this week alone saw the bash celebrating the Juicy Couture store opening (which shares a block with Matthew Williamson & Stella’s store), the Tatler 300th anniversary party and the Vogue/Bulgari party. Last night, Alasdhair Willis (Stella’s husband), threw an intimate do at his Duke Street gallery, while Cindy Crawford launched her Omega collection at the Almada club (where Anna Wintour made her LFW date with Chris Kane). The latter drew the most stars yet including Lily Allen, Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley and Jasmine Guinness whilst Rhys Ifan flirted outrageously with model du jour, Tolula Adeyemi.

The Paperball & Paper Fun

paperball 3.jpgLast night’s Paperball, at the MAD museum, was full of beer, paper and Madeline Albright.

The exhibition and party and dinner were split amongst five floors which meant me and my boots got quite the workout (the elevator moved at a glacial pace) and though the party party was mean to be on the sixth, everyone gathered on the second floor.

Bill Cunningham wove his way in and out of the exhibit, snapping pictures of girls in paper dresses, paper flowered hats and paper bow ties while I obsessed over Jen Kao’s dress. I’ve never touched anything in a museum (duh), but I had to reach out and poke it to make sure that it wasn’t leather. I still don’t really believe the laced up, shoulder padded shift is built from paper; it sat next to Bliss Lau’s corseted dress, inspired by The Great Gatsby (though we’re pretty sure Daisy would blush) and Zaldy’s fantastical swirling cocktail dress.

Matthew Blows It

matthew williamson ss10.jpgYou know a show’s bad when you can’t wait for it to be over, especially when it’s only seven minutes long.

Unfortunately, that’s the way Matthew Williamson went yesterday. It wasn’t all his fault though. The ridiculous heat - sweat poured off front row faces including Olivia Palermo, Cecilia Dean, Twiggy, Yasmin LeBon, Leigh Lezark, Aliona Doletskaya, Michael Roberts and Jodie Harsh - was hard to stomach. Kind of like Williamson’s attempts at tailoring.

So far, he’s built a pretty solid business over the past few years with his haute gypsy, running off to Ibiza look. It includes lots of long flowy dresses, mirrors, colour and hippie dippy frocks often without shape and still eye-poppingly expensive.

His marketing’s genius, Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Plum Sykes, Jade Jagger et al, are his best friends, campaign stars and constant photo companions so he was, essentially selling a dream lifestyle, rather than clothes, which is quite easy to buy into.

But this year, Mr. Williamson decided to tailor which was, we agree, long overdue. And yet it didn’t work. You can’t just add a structured waist and a cupola sleeve without changing everything else that needed changing, i.e. Ibiza happy prints and weird houndstooth which is what came down the runway.

In fact, the final piece, a silk maxi dress, had beauty pageant written all over it, which is probably the worse thing you could say about a collection.

London is Definitely Calling

camerondiazandleonardodicaprio.jpgCameron Diaz, Leo Di Caprio, Mickey Rourke, Rihanna, Russell Crowe, Pharrell Williams, Michelle Williams, Jude Law - no hang on, Jude lives here….so apart from him, what are all these Hollywood’ers doing in London?

Looks like school is out in LA, as they seem to have descended en masse. Of course, the tabbies are having a ball speculating whether Cameron is here with her new “boyfriend” Leo di Cap, or if she’s dating Jude Law, who she hooked up with in the nightclub Movida. (A weird choice to be sure - it’s a bit bridge and tunnel.)

She will be happy to know, however, that Kate Moss’s hairdresser/bestie, James Brown, has finally opened up a salon in London. His staff charges, well, a snip - only £55. But to get the man himself, you need to be prepared to fork over £500.

Shop The Runway (Really)

show studio opens shop.jpgWe’ve always had a bit of a blog crush on ShowStudio and now they’ve really gone and done it.

Nick Knight moved the site’s headquaters to London’s Bruton Place - parallel to the dream street that houses Stella McCartney and Matthew Williamson’s - and thought they’d get in on the retail action.

Today marks the opening of their very own store full of fashion delights including props straight from a few major runways. The Shop is part live studio and part gallery, selling things like a John Galliano customized Union Jack and a miniature Victorian greenhouse built for a Tim Walker/Coco Rocha editorial.

Fashion Car Show

ellemcphersoncarshow.JPGIf you were at the top of the fashion pile what would you drive?

Well, the newly unveiled Jaguar XK and XJ, of course. Last night, we learned that Jefferson Hack, Matthew Williamson, Rosamund Pike and Elle McPherson all have their orders in.

And if you were a recently named beauty brand ambassador for Chanel, what would you wear? Duh, Chanel. Wrong. Try head to toe Topshop, which is what Poppy Delevigne wore last night at the unveiling of the of the car. Though she pretty much made up for that by bringing her dad as her date. Cute.

Do tell…what do you think is the most fashionable ride out there? Also, if you can explain Elle McPherson doing Kate Moss months later, that would be great too.

Jonathan Saunders Joins the Club

j saunders aw09.jpgJonathan Saunders will join his Brit friends at London Fashion Week this September.

He, like Burberry, Pringle and Matthew Williamson before him, will return to the UK in honor of the British Fashion Council’s 25th anniversary after showing in New York for the past couple of years.

The BFC’s averaging about one glorious return per week and considering LFW doesn’t start until September there’s room for about twelve more to change their mind.

Between this, the recession and the move from the Natural History Museum to Somerset House we’re expecting major changes for fall - here’s hoping the BFC’s grand celebrations make for one serious week long party.

Havaiana Humanity

Lulu-Guinness_V_11jun09_pr_b.jpg.jpgAfter you have given away few pairs of shoes away, you may want to check out this footwear-charity collaboration.

While Abby is considering forgoing her Havaianas to save her feet, some big names in fashion have created their own versions of the summertime staple.

The sandals are to be auctioned off to benefit charity CLIC Sargent, a charity giving money to young people who have cancer, and their families.

Naomi Campbell, Manolo Blahnik, Matthew Williamson, and Lulu Guinnness (pictured) are just a few of the people adding their special touches (or in Naomi’s case, heels) to these flip flops.

Havaianas is no stranger to a collaboration. In 2004 the company partnered with H.Stern to create a diamond encrusted pair. And while we love diamonds, we love Issa’s polka-dotted pair more!

The shoes are hitting Selfridges window displays on June 15, and will be available for auction on June 26, but for now you can check them out online.

Is it sad that we are checking the cost of flights to London right now so we can check them out in person?

Pringle of Scotland Moves to London

magdalenainpringleofscotland.jpgLondon Fashion Week has added another show to its lineup. Pringle of Scotland (who have been showing in Milan) will join Matthew Williamson and Burberry back in the UK to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the British Fashion Council and the company’s own 195th birthday.

And it sounds like they may be staying put at LFW as part of a new direction for the company.

We’re looking forward to seeing this “more sensual, feminine” look in the newest ads, shot by Fabien Baron and starring Karlie and Mark Cox.

“It felt like the time for a new approach, and we wanted to bring in a different mood — one of sensuality and delicacy, with sultry undertones,” Creative Director Claire Waight Keller told WWD.

As long as they keep making those yummy knits, we think this all sounds fantastic.

Matthew Willamson’s UK Bound

matthew williamson anne v aw09.jpgLondon Fashion Week is the best fashion week.

It might not boast Paris’ decadent runways or New York’s celebrity quotient, but it is the most fun, the most fashion loving week of the three. Britons who love fashion, love fashion and their outfits alone are worth the trip. The outrageous runway collections are just the icing on the cake. And because it is so small, the major designers so few, the whole thing runs like summer camp - no hierarchy, no condescension - it’s all about the clothes.

But this morning, Matthew Williamson announced that he, too, was headed home for the Spring Summer 2010 collections, just a week after Burberry announced the same. This means that London Fashion Week is bound to revert to a proper Fashion Week with the attendance of major editors who usually skip it and the front row celebrities that accompany Bailey and Williamson everywhere.

Of course, London must be thrilled for two of their greatest exports to return home and we can’t wait for the grand celebrations of the British Fashion Council’s 25th Anniversary.

But really, if next week’s press release says Stella or McQueen, we’ll be shocked.

Is the New New: Leigh & Sienna

matthew and leigh sitting in a tree.jpgLondon says Leigh Lezark is Matthew Williamson’s new muse.

The DJ, who recently posed for Mango, is signed to IMG. And while she and her fellow Misshapes continue to DJ fashion shows and parties all over the world, Leigh has been spending more and more time in front of the cameras this year.

Whether Sienna Miller’s gotten too old for the gig or is just too busy playing muse to sister Savannah, she’s definitely been less associated with Williamson this past year and Leigh has taken over, posing in a number of Matthew’s H&M looks lately.

She’ll have to work hard to inspire Matthew’s upcoming collections, accompany him to events and lend a rock n’ roll edge to a label generally worshipped by those of the boho-chic persuasion.

As for Leigh’s outfit choices…in spite of her penchant for the prettiest, but always black clothes…this makes so much more sense than Hogan or Mango. Keep the high fashion coming.

Matthew Williamson’s H&M Commercial

Just in case you haven’t heard, Matthew Williamson recently launched a collection for H&M.

There was a major London bash, a New York launch and then a Grace Jones-centric party on a boat in the Hudson and now, this commercial. Daria speaks, which is rare, and Matthew Williamson emerges from underground, which we imagine is also rare.

Grey-haired men, Dolce-shouldered models, pink horses and bikini-clad women star; at the end Matthew declares, “Well, I haven’t done it all, yet.”

What, exactly, does he have in store?

Love Is Blind, We Are Not… And Neither Are You

grace_jones_99.jpg We’ve never given away a Love is Blind post before, but fine, here you go.

Grace Jones is the fashion icon singing at Matthew Williamson’s party with H&M tonight.

Not Debbie Harry.

Not Carla Bruni.

And not Grace Slick, of Jefferson Airplane / Jefferson Starship fame who - confession - we’ve confused with Grace Jones before.

But good luck trying to crash this party - it’s on a boat. In the middle of the Hudson.

And we’re good at finding a lot of things, but a dinghy with a motor that can careen up to the side of Matthew Williamson’s random yacht? That’s a little too Pirates of the Caribbean for us…
