After a pretty dramatic 2008, which ended in the announcement that Peter Som would not be showing at this Fashion Week, shots for his collection for Fall 09 have thankfully hit Style.com anyway.
Some of the looks are a little kookier than expected, but that’s probably the best way to make everyone appreciate your return anyway.
In other designer resurrection news, the details of Mayle’s closure have emerged: Expect Jane Mayle’s Elizabeth Street shop to close on February 28th, as originally planned, but for her brief come-back to be available via a pop-up shop just one week later on March 6th (not April, as previously reported). Her last line will be kind of like a refurbished greatest hits, including pieces from her Fall 03 collection, a personal favorite of hers.
And of course, if you’re dying for more designers back-from-the-almost-dead news, tune in Wednesday for glittery reportage of Richie Rich!
Back when Jane Mayle announced she would be closing up shop next month, everyone shared pretty much the same reaction: Sadness and disappointment with an undertone of “I’ve got to hit their next sale.”
So you’d think that today’s news of Mayle holding off her closing until April - and tucking a “highly limited-edition collection” into the crunched time space, too - would have brought only one response from everyone, but maybe not so.
One half of the Fashionista office was all, “Yay! Another shot at cute Mayle clothes before summer! Hope there are little dresses.”
The other half: “Whoa, really? That seems a little sneaky - Getting sales off all the hype from closing? And while everyone’s been clamoring to get a piece from her last, or what was her last, collection? It’s a little off-putting, though I’m sure it’ll all be great stuff.”
So is this kind of like a backhanded piece of good news?
We’ll think about this afternoon - But of course, see you at the store, right?
The last time we went to a Mayle sale, to shop their Pre-Fall 08, we spent way too much money, but kind of had a little glow for about a week.
So if you’re looking for a pick-me-up today, may we suggest their Fall 08 sale with a little Cafe Habana Mexican corn afterwards?
The sale’s today only, from noon to 7pm, with the goods at 40% off.
For more details, check out their announcement in our new sales section.
And be sure to let us know what you got - we love to hear your shopping stories.
Are you really busy today? No, not really?
Good.
Because Mayle’s having a sale, and we know you want to get in on what is likely to be one of their last events.
What: Up to 40% off all Pre-Fall, including bags, silk camisoles, dresses and “some great pants.”
Where: At the Mayle shop at 242 Elizabeth Street.
When: Now until Sunday (October 19th).
Why: Aren’t you just dying for a little piece of history? Below retail?
See you out there.
Jane Mayle isn’t the only ’90s upstart shuttering:
Hard Candy will also slim down by next season, selling only its gift sets and liquidating everything else, including the iconic pastel polishes that made the brand famous, thanks mostly to Clueless and MTV.
The good news in all this is that they’re liquidating their inventory, so you can get tons of makeup for under $5.
The bad news is you’ll never be able to pass on the joy of overpriced and juvenile, but amazing, nail lacquer to your daughter once she hits middle school.
Get it while you can.
Imagine being an independent designer known for your beautiful clothes - not for plastering your name all over shorts or being on a reality show.
You’ve received great press, you have a cult following, celebrities love your clothes - good celebrities - and your store is a cornerstone of NoLiTa’s indie-mall.
Now imagine Forever 21 ripping off your dress, your design and your embroidery.
Are you pissed?
We would be, and we’re sure Jane Mayle is, since Sarah from her office just e-mailed us this link.
Sure, the one on the right is black and missing the drawstring, but the design on the front is exactly the same.
We don’t approve - as if you didn’t already know that.
Kate, shopgirl for Lyell (at left), Jo, shopgirl for Mayle (right)
Got Them: On Mott St, after leaving the florist.
Stalked Them: Because Kate’s tights and Jo’s shorts/shoe combo made our heads whip around as we walked by
Shot Them: So many reasons actually: We loved Kate’s braids, Jo’s specs, the high-waisted tucked-in look, and because they look like an Anthropologie catalog come to life - plus, this is the second time we’ve spotted similarly dressed friends on Mott.
They Say: “We didn’t plan it, we just happen to dress alike a lot.”
We Say: You guys need a theme song.

Last night, Natalie and I bolted uptown for the much anticipated press launch of Rogan Gregory’s line for Target, which was on sale at Barneys.
We each went with one specific item in mind but walked away with three or four. Among the racks of surprisingly very cute, organic cotton clothes we learned the following:
1. The Voguettes aren’t interested in Target clothes - even if they’re in Barneys - and instead headed straight for the surrounding racks of Philip Lim and Mayle.
2. Jessica Szohr, aka Vanessa, is not only a huge fan of Rogan - she walked away with armfuls of tops and brightly colored swimsuits - but also the most beautiful Gossip Girl cast member we’ve seen in person. (Actually, we’ve met everyone but Leighton and yes Jessica even beats Chuck and this is huge for us).
3. We own something from every single Go International collection and Rogan’s is far and away the best quality. Whether it’s because the fabric’s organic or because it was literally two years in the making, we’re not sure, but we do know it managed to hold it’s own among the regular Rogan clothes and every other lust worthy piece of clothing on the 7th floor.
4. When Rogan says eco-friendly, he means eco-friendly - all purchases were packaged in the organic cotton tote to the left.
5. While shopping, we got a message from a tipster that he overheard a girl at the register say, “My ass cheeks are totally going to falling out the bottom of these but, whatever, I’m not going to wear them to work” - she was buying the leopard print shorts.
And that’s how you know just how awesome the clothes are.
The line launches for the public today - so get up there!
