Cameron Diaz, Tough Girl

V60_CAMERON_WITHOUT_TEXT_5.jpgWe love when celebrities put themselves in the hands of a talented photo/styling/hair/makeup crew and let them do what they do best.

It unfortunately doesn’t happen as often as it should, usually thanks to a high-powered, but incredibly meddling, publicist.

We understand their role in preserving said celeb’s image. But we’ve been on way too many shoots where an awesome photo never got taken because someone didn’t think it was the right “message”

This makes us appreciate V’s cover story (shot by Mert & Marcus) with Cameron Diaz all the more. Cameron’s sunny California surfer girl image is great. But thank god she can still have fun and mix it up a bit too.

Edgy, early Madonna-inspired Cameron is a very good thing indeed.

Whose Reality?

mert and marcus take givenchy AW09.jpgGivenchy gave WWD a sneak peek of their new campaign and change abounds.

Inez and Vinoodh have shot for Ricardo Tisci for the past nine seasons, but Mert and Marcus did the honors for the AW09 collection. Their spreads - for glasses, bags and clothes - feature Mariacarla (duh), Iris Strubegger (who’s officially everywhere), Leonor Scherrer, Ranya Mordanova and Adriana Lima, who already surprised everyone just by walking in the show in March.

Tisci hailed the changes as steps toward a more realistic brand image, “It’s important to give reality to women.”

But aside from the fact that the above image represents reality to very few women, who wants reality in their luxury fashion ads? We appreciate acknowledgment of the economic times, but when the Givenchys and McQueens actually embrace reality, we’ll be devastated.

Bye, Bye Katie

everyone loves drew.jpgSo, you think we’re obsessed with LOVE?

Maybe.

But only because we’ve been obsessed with POP since we went to London sophomore year of college and spent too much money on mind-blowing magazines.

Since then, we love all things Katie Grand. And while we can’t wait for LOVE’s debut, it’s with great sadness that we mull over her final, Drew Barrymore-covered issue of POP.

Her last letter from the editor, in which she talks beginnings, highlights and ends, after the jump.

Scarlett J for Dolce

scarlett johannson for dolce gabanna spring 09.jpgScarlett Johansson’s rumored to be the new face of Dolce & Gabbana.

She’ll front their Spring 09 campaign, already shot by Mert and Marcus according to Style.com, though for beauty or fashion, no one knows.

Scarlett’s experienced either way. She’s posed for L’Oreal and Louis Vuitton, both of which should prepare her for Stefano and Domenico in case her numerous red carpet Dolce wearing moments weren’t enough.

Tthis puts the celeb count at three this spring with Katie Holmes for Miu Miu and Madonna for Louis Vuitton. The group model shots are at a bajillion and we wonder how either strategy is recession friendly.

Meanwhile, we’re secretly hoping Scarlett makes a cameo on Model.Live, since Cato Van Ee is in D&G’s Spring campaign, too.

She can address the major differences between acting and modeling and tell us how she strikes such a delicate Dolce/Stella balance.

Victoria Drops Trou for Armani

nakey beckhams w august07.jpgHis and hers towels make us giggle.

His and hers underwear ads positively thrill us.

We think this might be history in the making. From now on, for every nakey David Beckham for Emporio Armani Underwear ad, Victoria will get one to match.

WWD reports that Mert and Marcus have already shot the Spring 09 campaign starring Posh, whom Giorgio calls a “style icon, a dynamic lady whose influence and recognition will add great excitement to the continued international growth of our Emporio Armani women’s underwear business.”

Her body should also add some “great excitement” - we haven’t seen Posh in her underwear since that steamy W shoot over a year ago, since which her fashion cred has skyrocketed with a starring role in the Marc ads, a well-received line of Roland Mouret, ooops, her own, dresses and front row seats on major runways.

On another note, whatever happened to the Beckham reality show?

Kate Gets Interviewed

kate moss interview cover september 08.jpgIt’s here.

The new Interview, in all its Kate glory.

So of course, we had to share - though we highly suggest picking it up in person. You can’t really appreciate the cover until you shake it around under lights to make the foil cover do a fun little light dance.

Because we’re so in love with you all, we’ve posted Kate’s entire spread, and her interview with Glenn O’Brien, after the jump. (We skipped the Margiela piece because, really, it was an interview with Maison Martin Margiela, not the private Margiela one-on-one we’d hoped for.)

Click through to learn that Kate loves boobs, hates implants, and actually did, yes, think she was too thin back in the day…

Miu Miu Goes French

vanessa paradis.jpgOn the one hand, Vanessa Paradis for Miu Miu makes as much sense as Johnny Depp for Captain Jack Sparrow - quirky, elegant and sexy in an offbeat way.

But on the other hand, while Vanessa might not have an official contract to wear Chanel every time she steps out of her house, we can’t really imagine her in anything else.

The French actress and singer wears decidedly pretty dresses with red lips, making this Miu Miu collection in particular a strange choice - we’re having a hard time picturing her in the monogrammed athletic outfits or retro print shifts.

No doubt Miuccia, Mert, and Marcus will let her keep the lipstick, but how will they make the collection suitable for someone who’s known for her very romantic style?

Not to mention someone who said just last month, “I hardly think about fashion at all.”
