BOO!

lindsay and tobias nevernude.jpgIf you already know you’re going to be Lady Gaga or Michael Jackson for Halloween, this isn’t for you.

I committed to being a Nevernude last November 1st - even though I have the perfect Betty Draper dress - so I’m missing the excitement of finding a costume (but I do get to wear my trusty denim cut-offs!).

If you’re still searching and looking for something more creative than Ricky’s, we’d suggest checking out two of our favorite vintage destinations. Zachary’s Smile just made their basement sale space at 303 Mulberry a permanent vintage dream with almost everything - including their own label - going for less than $50.

Let’s say you find the perfect suede hot pants and embroidered hippie boots, but still need the right peasant blouse and floppy hat - we’d head up the street to Screaming Mimi’s at 382 Lafayette and scour their in-store costume pop-up shop. This year’s theme is Dios de los Muertos and we can almost guarantee you’ll leave with the perfect costume.

Meanwhile, I’m already having nightmares about wearing a nude bodysuit.

Agyness is King

1363309042_orig_ag3.jpgWe’re still rolling our eyes over the Leighton aging antics in September’s Harper’s Bazaar, but this morning, Models.com posted an editorial that gives us back some faith in the mag: Agyness channeling the different looks of Michael Jackson.

It is especially telling to Michael’s influence that he could be portrayed by a blonde, white, British woman. Though you could definitely insert a joke here. Of course, his sketchy cosmetic surgery changed who he was, making his face a blank canvas of sorts. His surgery dramas were a reflection his way too complicated to understand issues and we’re guessing sadness. But this editorial is focusing on his long-lasting and widespread musical and fashion legacy, the things that brought his fans happiness.

Terry Richardson shot it (he also shot Leighton for the cover) and we love it. They capture the fun in fashion that Michael definitely embraced when he dressed. Life can be rough, but clothing can always lift our spirits—especially if it’s sequined. His fashion choices were as significant as his music, and this homage is making us feel like moonwalking again.

Quote of the Day

“Regretting the YSL sequin jacket I bought as the one in the Micheal Jackson costume at Abracadabra is not that bad and only $19.99.” — The LSD tweets.

Fashion and the Jacksons

janetandmichaeljacksonkissoncheek.jpgThe memorial service for the King of Pop is about to get under way. And until we did our morning read of WWD, we hadn’t even thought about how it would affect LA’s fashion industry, which happens to operate basically right around the corner.

I used to work in the Cooper Building in downtown Los Angeles and anytime there was a bit of a protest (or big ones like those on immigration) it turns into quite the traffic mess down there. So here’s hoping all those uber-fans don’t hinder your work day too much.

So what will the Jackson family be wearing today?

MJ on Ebay

michael_jackson_zipjacket.jpgSo, you gotta figure there’s going to be a new rush on those red leather jackets (both the Beat It and the Thriller versions) right?

I just popped over to Ebay and there definitely weren’t as many for sale as I’d expected. Maybe sellers are hanging onto them now or perhaps that run already happened this morning.

The zipper jacket is definitely the more iconic of the two, and the one I’d snag if I was a collector. There seem to be a plethora of replicas of the other style, somewhat diluting its specialness.

If you’ve got an extra two grand lying around and yesterday’s events have stirred a long-forgotten Jackson obsession, head here now. It looks pretty real deal to me.

On the other hand, originals of the famous Farrah poster are running around $100, with signed copies going as high as $500.

The Ultimate Thriller

mjhumannature.jpg.jpegI had a folder in elementary school with this picture of Michael Jackson on the front. It actually had a cardboard record coming out of the top like a real album cover…and it was my most prized possession.

Of course, I was as obsessed with his music as any girl in the 80s, but I was also incredibly infatuated with the look—the vest, the yellow, the bow tie. And to be frank, I was completely in love with Michael Jackson.

I could go on for a million years about the moments and the memories that his music brings to mind. I will never forget sitting in the family room with my mom and dad, watching the “Thriller” premiere. For any of you too young to remember, this was a serious national event. When MJ’s hair caught on fire on the set of that Pepsi commercial…major disaster! And don’t even get me started on all things related to “Man in the Mirror”.

I Want My MTV

cindycrawfordhouseofstyle.jpgAs much as pop culture invades every part of fashion these days, we’re not usually the go-to site for MTV coverage. But this WWD retrospective got me thinking about all the fashion-y things I’ve loved and lost on the once very stylin’ network over the years.

Of course, there were the awesome first two incarnations of House of Style which furthered my youthful obsession with models. Cindy was beyond. And I regularly dreamed about being best friends with Shalom and Amber.

But there were so many other style moments that seem to be missing in this era of Lauren, Heidi, et al. Perhaps because it’s hard to even catch a video on the channel.

Because its not like the entire music industry has lost it’s style, just that MTV kinda has.
