And The Winner Is…

sophie patrick monique cfda09.jpgSophie Theallet won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award last night.

The ceremony featured a keynote address from Alber Elbaz, who co-hosted with Nicole Kidman and told the crowd, “Success is like a bottle of perfume. Smell it, don’t sniff it and don’t drink it.”

Patrik Ervell and jewelry designer Monique Pean both took home $50,000 as runners-up, while Sophie received a $200,000 check and a year’s worth of mentoring.

The Brooklyn based, Alaia-trained designer made headlines when she showed her SS09 collection on all-black models (post-Summer of Italian Vogue) and then again when Michelle Obama wore one of her dresses last spring.

She told the audience, “I’m French, so I’m going to try to do my best…Thank you for making my American dreams come true.”

obamafamilyportrait.jpgO-Style: For anyone who wants to truly follow Michelle Obama’s style choices there’s been one go-to site, Mrs-O.org. Blue Thakoon

thakoonanddianass10.jpgSo, I will admit I was kinda hoping for an Amanda Peet sighting at the Thakoon show, you know because she’s there like every season. But no dice on that front. Other than Ciara, it was actually a refreshingly celeb-free zone, considering how much attention the designer’s gotten since Mrs. O started sporting his wares.

This collection had me at the first print, though apparently in my excitement I did something to my camera setting that caused for some unseemly photos. Thank god for Style.com’s here. I loved how he mixed patterns I would never in a million years put together and made them look really freakin’ cool.

There was lots and lots and lots of blue, from turquoise to royal. When it comes to blues, I usually stick with navy, and only navy. But Thakoon may just have lured me into the sea tones for springtime.

And now I know I’m officially entering the crazy place because after typing that paragraph about blue, the only image now entering my head is Arrested Development’s Tobia Fünke taking a turn in Blue Man Group. I think I really need to get some sleep, stat.

Leather Bound

angelinajolieinmichaelkorsbasterdspremiere.jpgI have a complete fascination with Angelina Jolie. While I realize I am far from alone in this space, I know that there still exist many haters. Now aside from the striking beauty, the children, BRAD!, and the devotion to humanitarian issues, I’m a huge fan of the simplicity of her style.

The lady likes what she likes. What she likes is often black. And lately, she’s been doing the more goddess-y gown thing. So I for one was pretty psyched to see her going more old-school tough girl in this A/W Michael Kors black leather dress last night at the Inglourious Basterds premiere in LA.

I dare say she is one of very few actresses in Hollywood that could pull this off with the same badass attitude that Heidi Mount did on the runway.

Michael Kors must be pretty psyched right now as basicially the two most famous (and photographed) women in the country are choosing his clothes. While Michelle Obama has been spotted regularly at public appearances in Kors, Angelina, not so much. Though we hear that she wears lots in “real life” and that the designer has even created capsule collections for her.

So do you think Diane Kruger’s pissed?

Who Made VF’s List?

carlabrunisarkozyandnicolassarkozy.jpgThe Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List has always somewhat baffled me. Maybe baffled isn’t quite the right word, but I’m always amused by what a mixed bag it is.

Of course, I don’t expect it to be a straight-up list of fashion folks, as that doesn’t truly represent the people covered regularly in VF. But man, do they throw in some random curveballs.

This year is no exception. Not surprisingly, both Michelle and Barack Obama (dad jeans, notwithstanding, I guess) make the list along with a smattering of royals, other world leaders, and their spouses. Think Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Sheikha Mozah of Qatar.

The fashion crowd is represented by Natalia V. and husband Justin Portman, Rachel Roy, Georgina Chapman, Tory Burch, and Franca Sozzani (love!), among others. On my questionable list is Stacy Bendet’s “Hello Kitty meets Joan Jett. Randomness” personal style. She’s a choice that makes me go…hmmmm.

Michelle Obama Cuts Her Hair, A Nation Waits

michelleobamabobhaircut.jpgNow we know many of you, not unlike some of us, are a little over it when it comes to the First Lady and her style choices.

And of course, the work she does is incredibly more important than which Michael Kors sheath she chooses for an appearance. But you can’t ignore the fact that, like it or not, she garners major press every time she makes a move.

Now she’s made perhaps her boldest decision since the Jason Wu Inaugural Ball dress by chopping off her hair into a much shorter bob, which I for one think is incredibly chic.

What interests me more will be whether or not this translates into a national trend like those inspired by Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Aniston, and Farrah Fawcett.

It’s even got the potential to go international.

UPDATE: Okay, so apparently it’s not a cut, just a rather brilliant updo. But we would highly recommend she go for this look on a permanent basis. We love it more now than we did this morning.

MObama Clothing Fatigue

michelleobamamoscow.jpegI personally have been a full-fledged member of the What’s Michelle Wearing posse like so many others. Though I have lots of fashion-obsessed friends who are either over it, or were never into it in the first place.

Turns out the Russians don’t really give a damn either. The Obamas trip to Moscow was not covered in the same way that their European trips have been. Translation: next to zero local coverage of the First Lady’s attire.

In Love With Love

michelleandbarackobamaelectionnight.jpegWe’ve been pretty open with the fact that our favorite couple in fashion at the moment is more certainly Lorenzo and Marc. Marc, of course, has always held a special place in our hearts but Lorenzo is quickly making a move for that number one spot. We’re still swooning over his adorable shorts at the Governor’s Island polo match.

And today’s WWD made our hearts swell just a little bit bigger. Lorenzo co-hosted a party with Interview on Sunday in honor of gay pride and marriage rights equality with a silent auction that benefited amfAR. Photographers like Jack Pierson and Steven Klein donated their work.

We’re huge fans of theirs but we really wish we could have gotten our hands on Lorenzo’s stylized print of a shot he snapped of the Barack and Michelle Obama on the television on election night. “The picture is called ‘Election Love’ and is about the intimacy between Barack and Michelle, even in public,” he said of his creation.

Because some days, love is really all we need.

Quote of the Day

“In many ways, the first lady has made people see — really see — black women for the first time. For example, when a black model appeared on the May cover of Vogue, news articles credited the ‘Obama effect,’ ignoring the concerted lobbying by fashion industry activists that began long before Barack Obama was even a presidential contender…Enthusiasm over glossy-magazine beauty as defined by a darker-skinned black woman has to be seen against the backdrop of history, when black women’s appearance was used as a tool of oppression. High culture rhapsodized in love sonnets about ivory complexions, flaxen hair and ruby lips. And today, black women still mostly surface as sidebars in beauty stories.” Robin Givhan in her interesting story from today’s Washington Post on Michelle Obama’s cultural role, and her real and fictional predecessors.

Love Letter #29375

rihanna rocks the gorilla.jpgDear Rihanna,

I don’t know much about your music. Mostly because I tend to pick up on music from the boys in my life and yours aren’t exactly their go-to tunes. But you’re on my radar (because I don’t live under a rock) and I’m digging your sartorial choices.

I know you have a red carpet/video/tour stylist, but I’m pretty sure when you walk out of the house in something like the Chris Kane dress at left, you’ve thrown it on all by yourself. Between that and your Stella sailor cardigan, the slouchy bag with which you dressed down that Alex Wang dress, your Balmain touches and this necklace you’re rocking all over NYC, we’re impressed.

So please wear more Chris Kane, check out Charles Anastase and maybe grab one of Marios Schwab’s 3D dresses? Also Ann D’s ribcage belt probably has your name etched along the spine and we’d love to see you in some Rodarte knits.

In closing, thank you for branching out where so many wear faded white tees and leggings - you’re like Michelle Obama for the Hollywood set and we kind of love you for it.

Oscar the Pretty

karlie kloss oscar resort 09.jpgOscar De La Renta showed his resort collection this morning.

On Park Avenue, naturally, in a pretty small, light room with an organ at the end of the runway and a balcony wrapping around. Vogue took up three rows - Andre Leon Talley wore a dusty pink alligator trench, at least two girls rocked Ann Demeulemeester’s brown lace-up sandals, one lounged in Alex Wang’s grey sweatpants and when Anna tried to sit down Bee squealed, “Mom, that’s my seat!” to which Anna laughed and promptly switched to her proper seat beside Grace Coddington.

The first half of the collection - white and navy boucle tweed suits, shifts, newsboy - screamed Chanel, especially when set to French tunes. The fantastical cocktail dresses built from lace, jewels and what looked like a fabric interpretation of chocolate shavings are exactly what we’d wear if we decided to be a lady who lunched for Halloween (if the costume came with a check).

Karlie opened and closed the show while Aminata, Daiane, Kasia, Hanne, Arlenis, Liu and Ubah also walked. I couldn’t help but think of all the nasty comments Oscar’s made regarding the First Lady’s fashion choices and wonder if this was him desperately trying to land in her closet.

Meanwhile, we just heard Vogue has swine flu. Great. My morning just got significantly less glamorous.

Our House

whcd03.jpgObviously, we don’t think we’re alone in loving that President Obama is pretty much the hippest guy to hold his position, well, ever.

But we’re quite sure we’ll never tire of examples of this.

Like the fact that the guest list at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner now includes people like Chace and Ed, Jason Wu, Donatella and so many others from our little world.

And of course, the guests are all looking their chicest to impress the first fam and the fashion press, who have taken coverage of MObama’s sartorial choices to an almost stalker-ish level. Not that we have a problem with that.

With Gossip Girl and fashion designers in the mix, it is really starting to feel like “our” White House, too.

Buy Vs. Borrow

sarah brown and michelle obama april 09.jpgThe concept of borrowing clothes is a fairly new one. While celebrities have taken advantage of the idea for years, it’s recently caught the public eye via sites like Bag, Borrow or Steal and stores like Ilus. And now, the practice has reached the political stage, too.

Sarah Brown, Britain’s Michelle Obama, may not play in the same fashion leagues as our First Lady, but her clothing choices haven’t escaped the public eye. The bottom line is, the Browns lack the Obamas’ bank account without lacking the media exposure. Also, Britain’s laws prohibit her from accepting gifts, which means that while her outfits at something like the G20 receive the same scrutiny as Michelle and Carla’s, she can’t quite buy from the runway.

But, she can rent - for about one-tenth the cost.

Despite the presence of rent-able fashion, it’s not so discussed. Are you a Sarah or a Michelle - and we don’t mean your bank account? Would you rather rent this Marchesa dress for $190 or spend an extra $200 and buy your own Alex Wang instead?

Quote of the Day

“I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there…You don’t go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.” — Oscar De La Renta whining in WWD because the First Lady doesn’t wear his clothes.
Quote of the Day

“He’s always asking: ‘Is that new? I haven’t seen that before.’ It’s like, Why don’t you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet.” - Michelle Obama, on dodging her husband’s inquiries about her shopping, to the New York Times.

Get Ready for True Obamania

michelle obama on oprah magazine cover.jpgHave you had your fill of Michelle Obama style news, complete with that Sonia Rykiel belt?

If so, too bad: The Washington Post is so committed to creating a beat on the First Lady’s style, they’ve relocated Robin Givhan (the Post’s famed fashion reporter who - fun fact - was the first fashion writer to win a Pulitzer for criticism) to DC so she can cover Michelle’s every choice of sleeve.

And since Robin will have the kind of access other Mrs. O followers only dream about? Consider the Post the new People of the First Family.
