Mid-Day Snack

garancegirlwithatattoo.jpgAgreed, Garance: I feel the pretty much the same way about tattoos. I still want one but just can’t decide what to get. Though I’m also forever grateful I never did anything ridiculously embarrassing as a teen during the 90s. Plus, this girl’s tat is way cool. {Garance}

Rain, Rain: Style.com found some fancy people who refuse to cave in to the wettest summer in the history of mankind (okay, but it feels like it) and still wear Givenchy wedges and Jane Mayle platforms. They’re fun to look at, but we’ve given up. {Style}

Double Your Pleasure: Raquel doing the masculine and the feminine thing for JPG. Well played Inez and Vinoodh. {Modelinia}

We Love the 80s: So do KT Auleta, Brian Molloy, and Missy Rayder. See how it all came together. {Dazed Digital}

Adventures in Copyright: So Meshed Up

advincopyrightwangvtopshop5-28.jpgWhen large companies rip-off small designer’s work, we get irritated.

There’s something tragic about watered down design - like watered down beer - ew.

Post-Chris Kane, someone sent us another disturbing Topshop rip-off. That Alexander Wang dress? The black stretch mesh sheath with thick, detailed embroidery? Topshop’s taken it upon themselves to bring the exact same thing, not an interpretation, to the masses.

Wang’s expertly coiled embroidery, extra-long sleeves, fun thumb-loop, and back zipper have been replaced with a far less innovative diamond-patterned embroidery, short sleeves and a plain sheer back.

Just this weekend we dubbed it the new “dress that won’t die.” It’s been everywhere - Kanye’s girlfriend wore it in Paris, Missy Rader wore it in Wang’s lookbook, in editorials featuring everyone from Eniko Mihalik to Liu Wenn - which means that everyone on Topshop’s design staff is ultra-aware of it.

The Wang original is for sale at Opening Ceremony for $955, while the Topshop version is going for $90.

The thing is, no one has to buy the $1000 version. Most people can’t. But instead of buying a copycat, why not admire the original and honor the designer’s work by not encouraging mass reproductions and rip-offs?

LV Leak: Kanye’s fashion fascination culminates in these strange (alleged) ads for his Louis Vuitton sneakers. {NahRight}

Say What?: The pretty people behind pretty pictures speak which makes the pretty pictures on this blog even prettier. {BackyardBill}

Plastic’s Fantastic: Nylon’s launched their own record label. Their first band? The Plasticines, four French girls with some serious fashion cred. {Nylon}

More to Come: French Vogue’s Emmanuelle Alt is the woman behind Michael Jackson’s dumbfounding day of Balmain and apparently, she has plans to further enhance his wardrobe. {Fashionologie}

Roberto Cavalli and the Hipster DJ

devo.jpgOur favorite Page Six scoop today pegs the cast of the new Cavalli for H&M ads:

Jessica Stam, Erin Wasson, Devon Aoki… and Steve Aoki, her older brother, who runs record label Dimmak and has previous modeling experience on The Cobra Snake.

To be fair, Steve did once serve as the face of an energy drink, but it’s still pretty funny he’ll blanket H&M ads across America. So why did they choose him?

We suspect H&M is taking cues from UNIQLO, whose oddly candid campaigns have the feel of a private joke. If you know Missy Rayder and the Ruff Club DJs, you feel the ads speak right to you, and whomever you were partying with at 4 am last night.

If you don’t get them, then it’s just a bunch of cute teens on the wall. Either way, it seems to be working at the cash register.

By roping Steve into a group of fashion models, H&M keeps one foot in the “underground” scene, even as its brand gallops to the mall.

One more thing:

Terry Richardson, the skin-loving photographer who shot those UNIQLO campaigns? He’s doing H&M’s Cavalli spread.

Hopefully it will be Stam he shoots naked for some of the ads, and not Mr. Aoki.

I’m Begging You Please To Come Home

Fashionista got a sneak peek at the new Uniqlo ads yesterday, and here’s what we learned:

Actor Mike Pitt arrived on set “looking like death, because he thought it would be better for the photographs.” In his shot, he wears a purple t-shirt and poses with star photographer Terry Richardson, who also took the campaign pictures.

Missy Rayder looks incredible. There are two ads starring a giant closeup of her face; in one, her hair flies everywhere.

Ruff Club DJ Mike Nouveau is also in the ads. He looks adorable, and far less dangerous than he does behind the DJ booth.

And the best part: For their in-store newspaper, Uniqlo interviewed Cecilia Dean, the editor of Visionaire and V Magazine, about her life and work. Nearly everyone in the industry has a crush on Cecilia because of her vision and her general ease with the fussy fashion industry. Example? See this photo, an informal shot of CD taken at MisShapes last year by Scott Meriam.

We heart Cecilia!

Missy Rayder, UNIQLO Girl

missy.jpgNew York has a food diary from Missy Rayder today, but what she eats isn’t nearly as interesting as what she’s doing:

One Friday while she’s scarfing brisket, Missy reveals that she’s on Terry Richardson’s set for the new UNIQLO campaign, meaning she’ll join LeeLee Soblieski, Jessica Joffe, and Mirabelle Marden as a face.

Earlier this winter, scores of scenesters were asked to submit their own photos to star in UNIQLO ads, too. Their casting team chose a tangle of Brooklyn band boys and uptown high school girls who lied about their age, all of whom were paid $150.

You’ll see those kids on billboards with Missy this Fall, though we’re guessing she was paid a little bit more…
