Mulberry Meets Apple

mulberryapple.jpgWe are oft reprimanded for not taking proper care when carrying around our precious laptops—which we realize is a problem as they, you know, are the way we do our jobs. But now you can consider us very, very excited to tote away.

In November (which we really can’t believe is less than a week away!) Apple and Mulberry are launching a collection of accessories that are just exactly as chic as you would expect them to be.

The collection includes bags and sleeves made of natural leathers and fun prints to fit your MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPod and iPhone, with prices ranging from $250-$1195.

So, no, they’re not cheap. But the holidays are indeed rolling around soon. So add some to your wish list.

Mulberry’s New Tricks

mulberry pup.jpgWe thought the puppies at Mulberry’s SS10 presentation were just for show.

As if the collection wasn’t cute enough, a few of the models walked out with perfectly fat French bulldogs sending us into (almost) silent fits of giggles. But it turns out Mulberry really is launching a line of puppy clothes.

The shearling-lined coats come in buffalo plaid and a classic mulberry check for $140, both in-stores and online and then you can stuff your pup into your giant Bayswater. Kidding, please don’t do that.

Meanwhile, if you’re listening Ms. Hill, would you please make a people version of the coat? It’s the only fair solution if you’re going to make us wait this long for the Alexa.

Trendspotting: Paint it Black

PULLTrendTattoo.jpgTired of doodling on paper or the soles of your Converse? How about your arm? Your thigh? Your chest?

Rodarte kicked off the body art trend in New York, covering their models with Sharpied tribal shapes to complement their primitive, deconstructed collection. James Kaliardos pulled from a variety of inspirations to come up with the black curvilinear designs that ended up the perfect armor for Rodarte’s futuristic warrior girls.

Round the Mulberry Carousel

MULBERRY SS10 3.jpgThank god yesterday quickly turned from the day I almost got trampled by a certain Fashion Week-obsessed celebrity blogger in a hot pink suit with camera crews into the day that I was in an elevator with Anna Dello Russo and had the chance to soak in her perfection from head to toe without looking like a total creeper.

We rode the elevator up to the Soho House library for Mulberry’s SS10 presentation/mini-runway show. They’d plastered the walls with the same candy colored print from their invitation and stacked the center of the room with carousel horses. A handful of editors (they had about five different time slots yesterday - a dream) circled the ‘runway,’ sitting in plush velvet chairs and couches. Carine held court in the corner with Julia and the first model walked out with a French bulldog puppy.

It took about three looks for me to pull my eyes away from the tremendous crimped hair, but once I did I loved Emma Hill’s flirty sheer dresses, slouchy rompers and bow-covered denim shorts. The bags, of course, were stellar. The Bayswater came in everything from shiny black and pink leopard print to slouchy leather and school bags came in both clutch and over the shoulder form. And there were even Mulberry jackets for the puppies!

I skipped the candy apples on the way out to stare at Anna’s towering laced up Louboutins just one more time.

Our Favorite Invites, Part I

SS10 INVITES SO FAR.jpgFashion Week invitations are flooding in and while some, like Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta stick to their classic cards, others use their invite as a sneak of their upcoming collections.

The most orginal, so far, are a fan from Ports 1961 and a video invite from Rachel Comey.

Mulberry’s brightly colored invite means it’ll be easy to wake up on the morning of the 15th knowing there’s a room full of fantastical accessories to look forward to. And the invitation for Organic by John Patrick is actually a 1921 Cleo Throckmorton photograph, Krazy Kat Klub, recently hand painted by L. Mulero. Preen’s recycled paper invite boasts a mesh, fishnet pattern that’s awfully similar to last season’s collection and Christian Siriano’s dark mountainous image looks like a Rorschach test while Rachel Antonoff’s old fashioned, embossed invite bills her presentation as a performance hosted by Sarah Sophie Flicker at the Henry Street Playhouse.

A Sugar Rush…And Getting High in London

emmacookrunwayshots:s09.jpgDespite it being fantastically over-exposed these days, we still are fans of Topshop—in particular, their designer colloborations.

Of course we love what Richard Nicol, Christopher Kane et al have done with them, but our fave capsule collection has always been that of Emma Cook, the ingenue British designer.

And it seems like Ms. Cook has a business head on her shoulders, along with her knack for design. As well as partnering with Topshop, she has hooked her wagon to Splenda, those fake sugar people, by creating a special edition bag for them that will have—you guessed it—a pocket especially designed to carry the new tablets called Sweet Minis.

It’s not good enough to design these days, you have to come up with some kind of gimmick to get people to take notice.

The OutNet Launches!

the outnet launches.jpgNatalie Massenet’s much-anticipated The Outnet finally launched this morning.

The site’s as easy to navigate, though not quite as pretty, as Net-a-Porter and stocks about 200 brands right now. You can search by designer, by category and by percentage off or click on Dress Me where they’ve sorted product by occasion. Also, they’re doing seventy-two hour pop-up sales on rotating items.

There’s a note on the site that Marc Jacobs will be in next week and we’ve spotted some amazing finds like this Derek Lam grecian dress, this cream Zac Posen bag and this awesome Mulberry jacket.

But remember that part about how it wasn’t going to be all recycled Net-a-Porter product? True, we probably spend an inordinate amount of time on the mother site but we’ve seen all of this before, this Chloe dress, these Marc shoes and this 3.1 Phillip Lim shift - all at the exact same prices - except for these sequined Miu Miu’s which are $100 less at Barneys right now.

There’s a gem of a Burberry trench, some beautiful pieces from Nina Ricci and we spy the Louboutin zipper heels. It’ll be swell to have a Net-a-Porter sale year round, but let us know when there’s something we haven’t seen.

Shopping

What Are You Buying?

balmain jeans are way too much money.jpgEven though we hear/read the r-word a jillion times a day, we also read stuff like this:

Mulberry just reported that their recent holiday and January sales beat last year’s by 30%, without even having to put their bags on sale til after December.

And we’re pretty sure you know all about the $2,165 ripped, “motocross” Balmain jeans that Net-a-Porter can’t even keep in stock, regardless of their stitched-in expiration date.

But, how is this happening right now? Or better yet, who is buying this incredibly expensive stuff?

We understand shopping through down times - sample sales and vintage stores are doing quite well right now - but full-price items that cost more than most NYC rent?

So we’re wondering - is it you guys? Please, tell us what’s getting you to drop your thousands (if you still have them). We really do want to know.

A Sign in the Times

nytimes sale bottega veneta small.jpgDid anyone else notice the curious ads in this Sunday’s Styles Section of the Times?

It starts on page 10: “Jimmy Choo SALE” in a plain white block. Below that: “John Varvatos SALE.”

Page 11: “Bottega Veneta SALE.” [Editor’s Note: Bottega Veneta has sales?!]

Page 12: “Mulberry HOLIDAY SALE, 50% off Select Merchandise.”

And that was when we knew this whole sale thing’s officially jumped down the rabbit hole.

Now go to it (if you can). Because you know being able to say you bought a Knot bag on discount is like being able to say you did a Hail Mary play in the last minute of your High School state football game, and came out a winner.

Anya Hindmarch Ripped Off Again

anya hindmarch bag.jpgWe’re starting to think London may be super fashionable but really unsafe, because we have no idea how a band of burglars is still getting away with storefront smash-and-grabs.

Once again, Anya Hindmarch, this time the one on New Bond Street, was robbed late at night. The thieves broke through the front door using a sledgehammer (who gets away driving around on a moped with a sledgehammer?) then made away with thousands of dollars worth of bags.

Even though the police know the thieves were two men wearing silver hoodies and light-colored helmets, they still didn’t catch them.

In fact, from all the store robberies over the past few years, and all of the arrests the police told us they made in December, so far only one person has actually been put in jail - for breaking into Mulberry and Louis Vuitton - and for just 26 months.

Here’s a tip - don’t do any late night window shopping in London.

First Look: Mulberry Is Pretty!

mulberry3.jpgLittle by little, the Mulberry brand is oozing its way into clothing.

Last year, they had some choice t-shirts and a really gorgeous caftan by artist Julie Verhoeven.

This season, they’re striking out on their own, with a tiny but very cool collection of cocktail frocks and menswear that manages to straddle the line between rumpled and style conscious, probably because all of their designs are really fresh and rather young.

The question is whether Mulberry can take the fan base they’ve got for their bags and transfer it, slowly, into their entire lifestyle brand. It’s something that Kate Spade and Coach are doing here in the States, and something Mulberry’s invested a lot of time, money, and coolness into cultivating in London.

Bottom line:

We really dig the clothes, especially the printed blue dress, but if these outfits are as expensive as the Mulberry bags, we’ll have to raid TopShop for an alternative…

At Mulberry, Love Stinks (Unless It’s For Style)

mulberry bag.jpgFashion relationships that have actually lasted:

Dolce + Gabbana.

Ruben + Isabel Toledo.

Patrick Robinson + Virginia Smith.

Fashion relationships that have always crumbled:

Ours. And apparently, most of the Mulberry girls’, too.

Since London Fashion Week happens smack on Valentine’s Day this season, the handbag company’s throwing a bash inside their Notting Hill store, with Hot Chip performing something boomboxed and fantastical, and everyone getting drunk instead of getting over heartbreak.

Unfortunately, we’ve always felt a similar attachment to boys and accessories, and since Mulberry’s bags are still too expensive to snag, there will definitely be some feelings of unrequited love left in London.

Oh well - it won’t be the first time.
