Gaga Nails It

The interwebs are all abuzz today with the release of Lady Gaga’s new video for “Bad Romance.” She’s the ultimate crossover as every music, celeb, and fashion site is fairly obsessed with its arrival.

As expected the styling is ridiculously awesome. The S/S10 McQueen is killer (as is the Lady’s ability to walk in those shoes.) And it’s totally creepy and gorgeous all at the same time. I’ve already watched it three times and can’t imagine getting sick of it anytime soon.

In honor of Gaga’s new gig as a beauty spokesperson, I’ll point you to my favorite non-clothing related styling choice in the video: the barbed wire-like nails. While they’re not exactly practical for every day life, you (or rather your manicurist) could create something nifty like this for a holiday party.

P.S. How weirdly cartoon-y were they able to make her eyes in some of those shots? I felt like I was watching Roger Rabbit!

It’s Official: Renzo Rossi finally confirms the long-believed rumor that Martin Margiela is not designing for the Maison. Apparently he’s “here but not here” which sounds to have just the right amount of mystery. {Vogue UK}

Back in Plaid: These shoes mark the return of the Burberry plaid. Are you ready for it, or is it still too soon for you? {Nylon}

The Season of the Nail: We haven’t seen this much chatter about nails in quite a few seasons. But we like it, because what’s easier or more fun to change than your nails. Plus for all you West Coasters there’s a rundown of great mani/pedi places in LA, including one of my personal faves, Recess. {LA Times}

A Color Revelation

macjinsoonhandswithpolish.jpgSo I know that many of you were annoyed with me when I told you about the nail polish collaboration between MAC and manicurist Jin Soon Choi without showing you the colors.

But now we can finally give you a look at Nail Trend F/W ‘09, which is available starting August 27th.

My favorite switches every time I try a new shade. Though right now, I’m rather partial to the khaki green. But as I said before, what I like the most is that they actually feel new.

Which one do you like best?

Revlon Hearts Mr. Sketch

revlon sniff nail polishes.jpgI’ve seen a lot of crazy beauty crap in my days. Fart guards, spray-on ab kits, press-on shadows - basically, nothing surprises me anymore.

Yet when Revlon’s April-launching collection of eight fruity-scented nail lacquers landed on my desk last week, all that practiced cynicism was replaced with a WTF. Nail polishes that become fruit-scented after they dry? Right. But since it’s my job, I went ahead and lightly painted my pinkie with the deep periwinkle Not So Blue-berry shade, then tentatively sniffed my nail.

I spent the rest of the afternoon compulsively inhaling my finger the way we all used to inhale Mr. Sketch’s grape markers in third grade art class, making the other Starbucks patrons around me very uncomfortable and giving myself one hell of a migraine.

At some point, while I inhaled the sickeningly addictive sweet, sweet scent of fake blueberries, I imagined the marketing meeting for this one: “So I’ve got this great idea. Nail polish you sniff. The kids’ll love it, providing they don’t get brain damage from inhalation.”

General impression: The colors are pretty, the polish goes on smooth, they didn’t chip easily and the scents are alarmingly addictive. No they don’t really fulfill any specific beauty needs, nor are they some groundbreaking development for the industry, but boy are they fun. And every now and then it’s nice to have a little bit of silliness in your routine. Now excuse me while I paint on the Mango and imagine I’m in Tahiti.

Trendspotting: Retro Digits

40s nails at new york fashion week fall 09 trend.jpgNew York Fashion Week may have been sparse with retro hair and makeup looks, but that didn’t stop designers from having some serious nail nostalgia.

Ruffian, Thakoon, ThreeAsfour and FORM all went retro for their runway manicures, taking inspiration from a look featured in a 1936 issue of Vogue. The original look consisted of a coral nail bed and bare moon, but nail artists for CND updated the old idea using blacks, whites and reds for a look that was both classically mod and slightly futuristic.

But more importantly, would you wear it?

“Is That Red 90210 Red?”

essie beverly hills bottle.jpgApparently, 90210 is the zip that keeps on giving.

Because believe it or not, there’s not one, not two, but four separate nail polishes dedicated to the city of ostentatious wealth. Kind of ironic in these times of financial strife, no?

OPI’s three-piece 90210 collection is based, unfortunately, on the new craptastic CW show. Props to the brand for the idea, but where were you when the original and far superior show was a weekly ritual? I would have been all over a Brenda nail polish like, well, Brenda on Dylan.

Alas, the three polishes are themed on lackluster Annie, Silver and Naomi. Though unlike their namesakes, all three shades are versatile and complementary, with the crimson and shimmery purple at $8.50 each and available now.

Not to be outdone, Essie’s teamed up with the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitor’s Bureau to create Love, Beverly Hills xx. The shade, available this month, is a racy red (at left) with a golden shimmer courtesy of actual 24 karat pure gold. Of course.

So in case you were wondering (and we totally know you were), the official color of Beverly Hills isn’t black (as in AmEx or Lauren Conrad’s shade of choice) or platinum (as in wedding band) - it’s rich and shiny red.
