Fashion Is Fun

It Looks Like the Road to Heaven…

In case you’ve been under a fashion rock this week, you know that tonight’s the night for the taping of the big Victoria’s Secret show. You may have also heard the rumor that some of the Angels are going to be recreating George Michael’s supremely awesome “Freedom ‘90” video for the occasion.

Now, we love Doutzen, Chanel, Miranda, et al. But seriously nothing will ever top this MTV supermodel explosion.

Naomi dancing in the sheer black top! Cindy in the tub! Christy and the sheet dress! Tatjana in the animal print! Super blonde Linda in that delicious oversized sweater! Throw in the jukebox and jacket from “Faith” burning and you’ve got yourself a video masterpiece.

So before it happens (or doesn’t) we thought we’d give you a little reminder of the original. And this song never fails to brighten a day. Though we’ll always contend that sometimes the clothes do indeed make the man. Just sayin’.

Make Me a Superstar

naomitalenthaus.pngBreaking into the industry is always hard, (unless, of course you’ve got a famous Mom and Pop and some modelesque looks, but we digress.) So when an opportunity as amazing as Talenthouse comes along, we have to share it.

Talenthouse gives anyone the opportunity to work with professionals in fashion, film, music, art and photography. And we’re not talking about people so indie even the most hip of hipsters hasn’t heard of them. We mean big names like Naomi Campbell, Dr. Dre, Nokia, and Adidas.

The site works so that professionals can post “Creative Invites” and anyone can submit their work. Talenthouse protects the artist’s creativity and makes no claims over the work submitted (a tricky loophole, whereas most contests claim some ownership over work submitted.) Your friends can vote for your work, and the host will select one winner to collaborate with.

Start getting creative! Naomi Campbell has posted two invites: one for a photographer and one for a model. There’s also a ski goggle design contest for Adidas, a viral video for Dr. Dre, and a ton of other options that will stimulate all your creative processes.

When Models Laughed

This should make your day.

We stumbled on a video of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and maybe Amber Valetta (but I’ve watched it five times and still can’t tell for sure) posing for maybe Mario Testino (going off the voice here, he doesn’t make an appearance) for an almost vintage Pirelli calendar shoot.

The girls look insanely young, dancing around the studio, hopping on each others backs and genuinely bursting with personality until they accidentally break their set. And I thought being a model circa now looked like fun.

Quote of the Day

“This year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced. I don’t see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns.” —Naomi Campbell on the industry’s continuing diversity issues.

Notes from St. Trop: Shoe Edition

kjacquessandal.jpgAs a veteran shopper, and of course being in the fashion industry, I had a vague notion of K. Jacques, only because some of my fave retailers—NAP and Matches—carry the shoe, or rather sandal, brand.

But having spent five days in the utterly gorgeous Port Grimaud (about 10 mins from St. Tropez), I can now say unequivocally that in this spot, K. Jacques rules. The line is a mainstay, much like cassis cocktails and Club 55.

A pair of K-Jacques is as important to fashionistas here as Louboutins are to Parisiennes and Nicholas Kirkwoods are to Londoners.

Quote of the Day

“First she hit me with her bag, screaming at me, and then she tried to slap me. For a few seconds I could not see a thing. I could hear that her bodyguards and her boyfriend were trying to drag her away.” —a photographer claiming to be a victim to one of Naomi Campbell’s infamous attacks. Her spokesperson says this one is completely untrue. And here we were thinking these days might actually be behind us.

Dolce Joins the Film Club

dolce fragrance video peek.jpgWe knew Naomi, Claudia and Eva’d landed Dolce and Gabbana’s new fragrance campaign, but we didn’t know each had a movie to go with their print ad.

The Italian duo’s anthology collection, inspired by Tarot cards and multiple personalities, doesn’t launch until September, though they’d like your anticipation to start building now so they’ve released the first peek of the first video.

This one stars Texan Tyson Ballou as Le Bateleur (the magician). We see is him in an elevator and him donning a monogrammed bathrobe which doesn’t, so far, make us want to buy perfume.

But Naomi’s up next week, July 30th, and though the sneak peeks are literally blink-or-you’ll-miss-it short, we are looking forward to the full length clips.

Networking It

naomicampbelltalenthouse.jpgJust what the world needs, right…another online community. But this one has us at least mildly intrigued.

Launching today, Talenthouse.com is a site for the creative and artistic. You can upload your art, designs, music etc onto your profile and it will also link up with Facebook, MySpace and the like.

I guess the point is that it’s a more focused, niche community and who are we to knock anything that lets people get their creative work out in front of more people. Their soft launch has already garnered 25,000 members and they’re hoping that number will grow to a million.

Naomi Campbell is on board as a supporter. As is Stephen Dorff, which is super duper random. But the name that made us take notice is director Fernando Meirelles. Because City of God might just be one of the most amazing movies EVER.

If you guys join up, let us know how goes.

Havaiana Humanity

Lulu-Guinness_V_11jun09_pr_b.jpg.jpgAfter you have given away few pairs of shoes away, you may want to check out this footwear-charity collaboration.

While Abby is considering forgoing her Havaianas to save her feet, some big names in fashion have created their own versions of the summertime staple.

The sandals are to be auctioned off to benefit charity CLIC Sargent, a charity giving money to young people who have cancer, and their families.

Naomi Campbell, Manolo Blahnik, Matthew Williamson, and Lulu Guinnness (pictured) are just a few of the people adding their special touches (or in Naomi’s case, heels) to these flip flops.

Havaianas is no stranger to a collaboration. In 2004 the company partnered with H.Stern to create a diamond encrusted pair. And while we love diamonds, we love Issa’s polka-dotted pair more!

The shoes are hitting Selfridges window displays on June 15, and will be available for auction on June 26, but for now you can check them out online.

Is it sad that we are checking the cost of flights to London right now so we can check them out in person?

People We Like

From Russia, with Chanel

naomi_campbell[1].jpgWe’re always excited when the latest Naomi Campbell gossip isn’t lawsuit-related, so it was great to hear that Karl’s shooting her in Moscow for a V Magazine spread. We love that two of our favorite icons are teaming up in the city that Karl paid homage to with his pre-fall collection in December. But actually, this was Karl’s first time in the city.

Makes us wonder: is it too presumptuous for a designer to base a collection on a place he has never visited? John Galliano is known for making extensive visits to Egypt or Japan to immerse himself in the culture before he goes to the drawing board.

Well, Karl did it, and he told WWD, “I like imagination and the way I think things could be, had been or should be — better than reality. You’re never disappointed by your imagination, but you can be very disappointed by reality.”

Reality has been coming up an awful lot in fashion. We raised our eyebrows when Riccardo Tisci said he was aiming for reality with the new Givenchy ads. Karl’s going in the opposite direction: even a real place has been imagined, for him.

So our final take on Karl and Naomi’s Moscow? It’s exactly the sort of fashion fantasy that we’d like to escape to.

It’s a Hit

julien and naomi .jpgJulien MacDonald used to be known at the UK’s answer to Bob Mackie - Naomi Cambpell or Geri Halliwell could be depended on to open and and close his shows with furs, feathers and sequins - which meant we were surprised when Jamey Hargreaves, one of the Matalan chiefs (think the U.K Target) handpicked MacDonald last year as a major investment.

The money came, of course, with the promise that MacDonald would deliver tamer collections, focusing on his knit and tailoring talents. And the results, unveiled last London Fashion Week were killer. Since then, buyers and editors have been fervently awaiting last Friday, the Welsh designer’s pre-order day, dying to claim their own crystal-detailed dresses, leather trousers and genius knits. Unfortunately, a handful of fashion favorite starlets beat them to the punch.

Chloe Sevigny’s already hand picked a bunch of key looks and Ashley Olsen’s pulled clothes for herself, as well as for her forthcoming Harper’s Bazaar shoot.

Which means this week - the same one during which Debenham’s named the leopard print dress from his diffusion line the fastest selling garment in the retailer’s history - is a good one for MacDonald.

It also means it’s about time his clothes gets stocked on your side of the pond.

Buh-Bye Kate

gisele on a horse.jpgWell not really, but Gisele’s gone and bumped Kate Moss from her number one spot on MDC’s icon list.

Was it her marriage? Her numerous campaigns? Her ability to move flawlessly from Victoria’s Secret to Louis Vuitton? Maybe it’s because she’s one of the few models who really is just a model without a slash in sight.

So now Kate’s number two, followed by Claudia, Natalia and then Carolyn Murphy. And Naomi Campbell’s knocked out of the top five to number six.

Hope that doesn’t make her too upset.

AbFab Goes West!

patsy and edina absolutely fabulous.jpgIf you’re not familiar with Absolutely Fabulous, get thee to Amazon.com.

The British sitcom ran on and off from 1992 to 2005. It stars Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders), a washed up model and a wannabe PR dame who spend almost the entire series drunk, stoned and decked out in the loudest Moschino and tightest maybe-Alaia they can find.

Patsy and Edina’s fashion obsession led to an insane roster of guest stars including Lacroix, Zandra Rhodes, Gaultier, Erin O’Connor, Twiggy and even Naomi Campbell.

So, we’re kind of jumping for joy that Fox confirmed they’ve picked up the re-make and will debut it later this year (Saunders, the original Edina, has signed on as Executive Producer). This means fashion, fashion, fashion on TV in the form of a killer costume department and hopefully some major guest stars.

Because while Victoria Beckham on TV is fun, a Patsy and Edina meet the Costello boys meet Jourdan Dunn would be life-changing.

Adventures in Copyright: YSL Gets Bullied

ysl and steve madden copy cat.jpgWe thought YSL was getting a break - everyone with access to a shoe-making factory ripped off last year’s woven Tribute sandal (which are still everywhere, though now paired with thick Wolford’s instead of the summer’s Current/Elliots).

But we noticed these vaguely familiar sandals in Steve Madden’s window yesterday.

The too shiny black patent platform stiletto comes with a criss-cross strap that wraps around the ankle and closes with a teeny tiny button. Their main fault, aside from the excessive shine, is the jarring tan color on the inside of the heel.

See, the YSL original - also called the Tribute which is kind of confusing since it’s a totally different shoe - is still patent, but won’t blind you thanks to its subtle texture and not-so-subtle quality. The straps close with a button - that was spot on, Steve - but the inside of the heel stays black, as it should.

If only Naomi Campbell knew Steve Madden, we bet she’d teach him a lesson.

Naomi and Mario Make a Commercial

naomi campbell looks smashing.jpgThe finishing touches are being added, as I type, to Naomi Campbell’s new fragrance commercial, recently shot by legendary photographer Mario Sorrenti in a London Studio.

The ad is said to be a new look for the supermodel who already has an impressive seven fragrances under her belt, all mostly released in Europe.

The name is still unknown, but I can promise you a little floaty dress, lots of pink, gladiator sandals, and a bow and arrow…

Until next time -

Bollywood Hearts Fashion

naomi campbell with super long hair.jpgAround Halloween, Bollywood launched their newest megafilm, Fashion, to incredible success but mixed reviews -

And it looks like they didn’t get enough.

Vogue UK reports that Naomi Campbell is set to appear in an animated Bollywood film, Jumbo, and even recorded a duet with Indian action movie star, Akshay Kumar, in Hindi.

No word on whether this is a serious attempt at yet another career for Naomi, but we’re secretly hoping she brings a cast of supermodels for back-up dancers on set.

And Now: Whose Halloween Party are Kate Moss AND Naomi Hosting?

naomi campbell and part of a shirt.jpgThis just in:

To: Tips@Fashionista.com

From: Kermit@begreen.com

So, I am not going to this party hosted by Kate Moss next Friday (I WISH!), but I just wanted to let you know that it is indeed a Halloween-themed event and I hear that it will not only be hosted by Kate, but by Naomi as well!

Makes me wonder if it has something to do with French Vogue, then? As they did do the cover together. But I guess we’ll have to just wait and see!

Vivienne Westwood will now Make You Dance

vivienne westwood lounging.jpgThings Vivienne Westwood has done:

1) Opened the SEX Boutique on Kings Road with Malcolm McLaren.

2) Forced Naomi Campbell into 9” heels, upon which she inevitably fell to the ground.

3) Gave Carrie the wedding dress of her dreams

and now -

4) Curated an album of her 16 favorite songs entitled Catwalk Compilation to be released at Selfridges on September 15

Vivienne likens the mix CD to her design choices - that it may “refer to the past, but it’s always projected into this heroic future.” So we fully expect it to be a little schizophrenic, but totally cool - the perfect soundtrack to a few Naomi moments in our bedroom.
