How V Cs It

v coco in motion video.jpgNatalie Portman wears a jealousy-inducing amount of Chanel on the cover of the current V.

Not content to pay homage to the brand through editorial, the magazine enlisted the help of filmmaker Stephen Smith to make a short film dedicated to the house of Chanel.

Natalie Portman’s not in it, instead it features a stop-motion collage of Chanel imagery, including some killer striped booties and a tweed hatbox bag, that make for the liveliest wish list we’ve ever seen in action.

Fashion Heaven, Around the Corner

Natalie Portman in Rodarte.jpgWe just got back from the Decades Two pop-up shop in Soho, above the Kiki de Montparnasse store and we’re still trying to catch our breath.

The Los Angeles location has a beloved, loyal following of fashion obsessives on both coasts. New Yorkers upon arriving LA have been known to stop by the store before even checking into their hotels.

And it’s easy to see why. Walking in the doors was like entering an other-worldly paradise where only beautiful things reside.

We spotted Natalie Portman’s black and blue Rodarte, the pink Oscar dress Carrie pulls out of Baryshnikov’s box, nude Louboutins and navy Lanvin pumps, perfectly worn in Balenciaga motorcycle bags, a mint green Valli gown, a McQueen caftan, Westwood bustiers and an entire rack of Chanel tweed.

Té Casan is Now Gone

natalie portman loves those te casan vegans she made.jpgMost people know Té Casan because of Natalie Portman’s venture into vegan shoes. Well, Natalie will now have to leave the vegan thing up to Stella because Té Casan just folded.

Luckily, for those die-hard fans, Bluefly still has a pretty good selection in stock, but as far as the store’s concerned, it’s closed, and the website says they’re updating (code for: we’re done).

We’re kind of sad about this because Té Casan was actually a really cool concept. The company plucked seven unknown designers who had previous experience at major design houses - think McQueen, Versace, Westwood - and had them design a new shoe every week. Not only were the shoes well-designed, they were well-priced, and limited edition (only 74 of each style were made), so you could stand out in affordable heels. Sadly, this is now over.

Here’s to hoping somebody else picks up the very smart idea at a different point in time.

Natalie Portman Covers Vogue’s Fall Issue

Nattie_Vogue.jpgKate Moss may have Vogue’s August cover, but the magazine has chosen someone else to hit their Fall Fashion issue:

Natalie Portman.

The actress spent all of Wednesday on a shoot for the magazine, surrounded by stylists and vegan goodies.

But we wonder whether all the clothes on set were vegan, or if bits of wool, silk, and leather made their way into the dressing rooms.

Obviously, expect a lot of Stella McCartney, but also look out for the interview, where Natalie will display her obvious charm and intelligence and also - hopefully - explain how she went from telling the press that she hated fashion to starting her own line of overpriced shoes.

Of course, since this is Vogue, the shoes will be called “affordable,” but that’s another story.

We really do like Natalie (seriously) and can’t wait to see the supercool cutie, and excellent role model for women, on the cover… but please rush the Kate Moss issue first!

Quote of the Day

“I wish they’d thrown off Rami, because he was so mean to Sweet P! But the one I really like is the guy with glasses and the total Misshapes haircut.” - Natalie Portman, on Project Runway, in ELLE.

An Open Letter to Natalie Portman

approval matrix shoes.jpg

Dear Natalie,

See?

Even New York Magazine thinks your vegan shoe launch is a little bit much.

On the upside, if you ever get tired of that particular shoe, you can chop it into small bits and serve it to your pet bunnies.

We love bunnies.

Even (especially?) if they’re not making up a J. Mendel coat.

Natalie Portman Is So Annoyed With Celebrity Fashion, She’s Designing Shoes

natalie.jpg The sweet veggie news for today is that Natalie Portman will design a shoe range for the Soho boutique Te Casan.

The shoes are vegan friendly, and debut in February, which should make for a very fun party complete with Natalie Portman on everyone’s camera phone rosters.

We like Natalie Portman very much, but when we heard the footwear news, we had to smile and remember this quote from the actress, widely circulated in the celebrity columns last month:

“I get pissed off that I go to a premiere to talk about my movie and the first thing they ask me is what dress I’m wearing. And look, I buy into that because I play along - you have to, in a certain way. If you don’t dress up then they’ll talk about that! It almost becomes less of an issue to play along with it, because then it doesn’t become a conversation topic. But that’s annoying.”

Maybe not annoying enough, huh?

The shoes will cost about $200, far cheaper than the Stella McCartney vegan heels, but hopefully just as cool.

Do Starlets Need Fashion to Succeed?

Amanda Bynes Wears Bitten We’ve always thought well of Amanda Bynes, especially after her teen hits What a Girl Wants and She’s The Man. Anyone who can dress up in drag and get Colin Firth to sing the BeeGees is obviously awesome.

But lately we haven’t been loving the actress, because of her coldly calculated moves on the red carpet. It’s as if her publicist and manager said, “Okay darling, if you want more parts, you’ll have to get sexy,” and boom. Plunging dresses. Too much makeup. White-blonde streaks.

And of course the piece de resistance - an eponymous clothing line, thanks to Steve + Barry’s.

The whole thing seems so forced that it bums us out - Amanda’s so talented and sweet. Does she really need fashion to keep her career?

Well, maybe.

With so many starlets cramming for parts, studios want girls who are constantly “out there,” ensuring bigger box office appeal. When Scarlett poses for Louis Vuitton, she’s reminding every Vogue reader to see her movie. When Sienna has a Twenty8Twelve party, she’s also smiling for her latest movie. And Kate Bosworth’s billboards for Tod’s and Coach and Revlon enforce her presence onscreen.

In fact, when we scoured our minds for really good starlets without a solid fashion job, we only found two:

Natalie Portman, who seems weirdly resistant to makeup commercials and designer partnerships… and Anne Hathaway, who’s managed to avoid signing herself to one fashion house.

Though we have heard rumblings of a Valentino deal…
