We’re So Vain

giselevainnewyorkcity.jpgWe probably think this post is about us…and in a lot of ways it is.

According to a report compiled by TotalBeauty.com, New York is the vainest city in the US. The study examined data like plastic surgeon to population ratios, number of personal care businesses (salons, day spas, etc.) and money spent on beauty upkeep.

Fact: New Yorkers spend nearly 60 million (yes, six. zero.) dollars on trying to make ourselves prettier each year. And there are more than three times the amount of salons et. al in NYC than any other city, and that includes Los Angeles.

These stats got me thinking:

—Do we New Yorkers feel pressure to be pretty because models and all-around beautiful people can be found at every turn? (Agyness Deyn is always at my am coffee spot. Yes, it makes me feel less than lithe and lovely early in the morning.)

Streetwalker: Two of A Kind

double double.jpgGeorgia, 20 & Leah, 27, salesgirls

Got Them: Strolling through Soho on the perfect spring day.

Stalked Them: Wouldn’t you? They’re dressed kind of perfectly and we worship anyone who still manages to layer and look comfy come New York heat.

Shot Them:
Because Georgia’s striped dress and scarf are a prime example of mixing patterns. And Leah’s silk Calvin Klein top was to die for, especially underneath her loose boxy jacket.

They Said:
“We usually shop at vintage and consignment stores, but mostly we like to wear the things we get for free from work.”

We Say:
You must have the best dressed office ever.

Streetwalker: Jelly Belly

flower power streetwalker.jpgMarion, 19, intern

Got Her:
Shopping with a friend, crossing the street at Broadway and Spring.

Stalked Her: Because we’ve been feeling nostalgic lately and these jellies, circa 1995 are like the cherry on our nostalgia cake.

Shot Her:
Because she’s mixing brights like a pro. That yellow jacket, floral skirt and fluorescent shoes would make Rainbow Brite proud. Oh how we’d love to wear color like this.

She Said:
“My style is a simpler and more urban Carrie Bradshaw. My shoes? A dollar at Target last year!”

We Said:
Take us shoe shopping, please?

NYC is Not a Plastic Bag Hag… Maybe

anya hindmarch famous tote are you sick of it yet how red.jpgWho says the fashion people aren’t ahead of the curve?

Practically eons after the canvas tote became the normal gift-with-product bag for every editor under the sun, New York City is finally catching on.

Mayor Bloomberg announced today that he’s trying to push through a new plastic bag fee (or tax, depending on who you’re talking to) for the City Council to consider, which entails charging shoppers $0.06 per every plastic bag used at the register, following in the steps of Ireland, San Francisco, and Ikea.

No word yet on whether the cost targets only delis and groceries, since many clothes stores (Macy’s, H&M, etc) obviously use them, too.

We think it’s a great idea. Not only would it pretty much kill the use of them, but we’re totally prepared thanks to every event / party / fashion show / gift over the past couple years.
