I’m sure it was for something important, but now I can’t remember why and this video makes me wish I was there in what was clearly the manliest room (barber shop?) of all of New York Fashion Week.
Even the clothes are nice, though we aren’t digging suit shorts on men who don’t share Thom Browne’s proportions. Anyway, Chad White opens, New York Magazine’s Amy Odell has a cameo and everyone has great hair.
“I mean, I was there for seventeen years. I didn’t get the job that Anna got. I guess that was my most memorable experience.” —Vera Wang to New York Magazine on her most memorable experience of working at Vogue.
The Met Ball might have been Monday but the fashion pack just keeps going and going, so we made the three obligatory stops last night and this is what we saw:
— At Derek Lam’s store opening, curved glass walls separate different sections of the store - think shoes from bags from dresses from coats - and totally distort your vision, but look amazingly cool.
— Every editor was there - Anne S., Robbie M., even Anna - though we didn’t read NYMag’s Rihanna tweet until after our cab made it above Houston. Too bad, we would have greatly appreciated seeing RiRi’s new blonde highlights in person.
Blonde, Blue-eyed Bores: Vogue labeled Anna Maria Jagodzinska “Natasha Poly” in their backstage video, even though they’re both on the cover of the latest issue and they don’t actually look too much alike. {Style.com}
What About Brad?: Rachel Zoe’s turned to Facebook to ask for help to keep her show alive. {New York Mag}
Condé Keeps Cutting: Editorial Assistants at Condé Nast are filling in for all those receptionists laid off last week. It’s safe to assume this isn’t what they signed up for. {FWD}
Mouse Ears: Giles, Luella, Henry & Daisy broke out their bedazzlers to update Mickey’s classic ears. They’re on display in London, on sale for charity May 4th. {Refinery 29}
Not Quite Fashion: But we’re obsessed with this video and you will be, too. It made us forgive her for the leggings. {Funny Or Die}
We knew there’d be good Fashion Week news eventually: Full Frontal Fashion might’ve been cancelled but you’ll still be able to get a behind-the-scenes look at New York Fashion Week via a new TV show called Videofashion Daily.
They’ll be covering shows on and off site - from Rag & Bone in Chelsea to Narciso Rodriguez at the tents - from February 15th to the 26th.
No word on a front row host, though backstage beauty coverage will be led by Glamour’s Editor-at-Large Suze Yalof Schwartz. Fabiola’s got her New York Magazine front row act down pat, so it’ll need to be someone equally bubbly and nice. Suggestions?
The show will air on NYCTV from 9 - 11pm every night. Full schedule after the jump.
Those of you still worried about what will happen with Lynn Yaeger’s career, take comfort - She’s been hired by New York magazine to blog Fall 09 Fashion Week.
Which means:
1. More of Lynn’s spot-on reactions (all day long!)
WWD announced that New York Magazine’s putting New York Look on hold, indefinitely.
The collection-focused supplement comes out twice a year and zeroes in on seasonal highlights including the best clothes, models, moments and shows. The most recent issue, with Anna Selezneva on the cover, documents the Spring 09 collections and could soon serve as a reminder of luxurious fashion weeks past.
Our favorite part of the magazine has always been the pictures, most recently by war photographer Benjamin Lowy who shot the season without stepping foot in a single pit.
Officially, they’re canceling the spring issue and won’t make any promises about next fall either which sounds pretty final. Out of all the magazines and websites closing, downsizing or making “drastic” changes, this one hurts the most.
If you’re a big fan of Sergio Rossi, then we really hope you made it to that sale last week, because it looks like they’re closing all their US stores by early 2009.
You’ll still be able to get the shoes at department stores that carry the brand, but visiting the boutique on Madison Avenue is a pastime forever gone.
So that makes two boutiques on Madison - Sergio Rossi and Alessandro dell’Acqua - victims to the r-word we’re sure you’re sick of hearing.
Who’s next? (And what’s happening to these retail spaces anyway?)
It’s called “Where’s Rogan? with Raymond Uberhoff” and it’s on New York Magazine’s website.
We don’t know what it’s for, where it’s going or how it got here.
It chronicles Rogan Gregory’s humble beginnings, a la E! True Hollywood Story, through to his fashionable success story. But then suddenly, he disappears and Uberhoff dedicates himself to solving the mystery.
Along the way, we meet two men who run a store called Opening Celebration and a girl who’s positively beside herself when she learns Rogan’s missing. We also see the designer hand sewing jeans with a needle and thread in a cage. The episode ends without a solution, but apparently this is just the beginning.
All we could think was, “Is this why his runway show got canceled at the last minute?”
We get the sense that Burberry hasn’t exactly been affected by the credit crunch.
Their profits are up 20% so far this year, they just opened up their new west coast flagship in the company of Kate Hudson, their refusal to use models associated to drugs in any way keeps them in the news and in conversation, and now, they’re taking over a bit of our sky line.
Next March, Burberry’s moving their US headquarters to 444 Madison, a 49-story skyscraper topped off by three illuminated signs from the olden days. Right now, they still say “New York” on them (that’s where New York Magazine operated from until they moved further downtown last year), but as soon as Burberry takes over the space, the signs will glow for the brand - and they’ll even give us the time and temperature, too.
(Burberry’s also throwing around the idea of opening their third New York store location there, but nothing’s set in stone.)
And now if only Topshop could get their own issues in order, we might be able to declare a new British Invasion - can’t wait.
“Want to thank the show for doing their part to get rid of Tory Burch flats forever.” - from the comments section of Daily Intel’s Gossip Girl reality-index recap from last night.
This is either a major mistake or a brilliant undercover ad ploy:
Fred Flare just released a t-shirt that screams “I Love New York.”
It’s fitted, it’s green, it’s pretty cute but not, you know, amazing.
The thing that makes it interesting is the type face. It’s the same type face that New York Magazine uses. In fact, it really looks like the t-shirt is saying, “I Love New York” - the glossy, not the city.
I mean, we love New York too, but somehow, we’re guessing the t-shirt isn’t talking about all that.
We missed Karlie at the Met Ball last night - but this video makes up for it.
She pirouettes across the dance room at her agency, gets “wholesome” and “classic” career advice from Molly Sims and talks about how her love of sports turned into a love of runways.
The best part is when she teaches New York Magazine reporter Kendall Herbst how to walk - the lesson comes complete with signature death stare.
We love watching models talk. It’s such a good reminder of just how young they really are.
“Did it strike anyone that Blair’s running through the crowd after getting yogurt thrown on her was like Anna Wintour’s running through the masses outside of Fashion Week when someone slammed a pie in her face? Plus 2.” - From the plus-side list of the Daily Intelligencer’s GG recap.
We’re getting a little Gossip Girl crazy around here.
The sun is out, we’re eating Sour Skittles, and there are only 5 days left until “The Greatest Show of Our Time” returns, (we’re obsessed with NY Mag’s running commentary and look forward to it almost as much as we look forward to the show itself).
Fred Flare’s thrilled too.
Their “What’s New” section boasts a Canvas Jenny Tote and a Blair baby doll dress. The tote’s kind of eh but the Blair dress comes complete with a bib, buttons and ruffle - she’d totally wear it with white tights and patent pumps.
We searched for a Chuck grandpa cardigan or a brightly colored Serena scarf but no luck yet. We’ll be checking back for more inspired titles.
(Editor’s Note: Please enjoy this shot of Chuck at SubMercer courtesy of photog extraordinare Faran. Britt’s to the RIGHT, but she didn’t think her beauty could hold up next to Mr. Bass. Check out that ripped jersey and exposed dog tags, ladies!)
