Shake Your Moneymaker

balenciagawalletsalary.jpegFirst, thanks to all of you who responded to our salary survey request. We were so excited to hear from so many of you. And we hope to hear from even more going forward so we can keep bringing you different bits of info that you can use.

Here are just a few of the things we’ve learned so far:

—People just out of school in Montreal are faring way better than those in similar positions here in New York. We heard from assistants to designers, buyers, and marketers making anywhere from $36,000-$56,000. A similar position in NYC seems to be going for $30,000 or under.

Now This We Want To Read

spinbookcover.jpgWhen I heard that Lauren Conrad’s book LA Candy was sitting atop the New York Times Bestseller List for the second week in a row, I may have puked in my mouth a little bit. I haven’t read it and don’t ever plan to do so.

And before you all start in on me, of course, I’m mildly jealous. What writer (and I use that term loosely when it comes to Lauren) hasn’t dreamed of being #1 on that list.

Now, this is not to say that I don’t like to dabble in the chick lit/industry roman à clef genre from time to time. But I want something that if not highly literary, is at the very least juicy!

B for Beauty

Would You Try This?: The Spermine Facial

facialphoto.jpgSo I was browsing through this week’s New York magazine on my way to work this morning and read a short piece on how the latest craze in anti-aging treatments is a sperm-based facial. I’m sorry, what now?

Called the Spermine Facial, it consists of slathering synthesized human sperm on your face and then running an ultrasound and infared light over the substance to help it, ahem, penetrate deeper. Townhouse Spa is currently offering this service for $250.

Apparently studies were conducted (can you imagine that clinical trial?) that showed that the antioxidant found in human sperm makes your skin softer and less wrinkly. I’ve seen people put some pretty crazy stuff on their face in the name of beauty but this takes the cake. I’m all for piling on the lotions and potions to keep my skin looking its best, but I don’t think I could get over the gross-out factor on this one.

Would you try the Spermine Facial or is this just too gross for words?

Mid-Day Snack

annawintourandalt.jpgTalking Cats: Mad-libs with Catherine Holstein. She loves cut-offs as much as we do, all things purple, dogs and shoes. {Glamour}

Twittered: In case you missed it, here’s a tweet by tweet account of Anna Wintour’s 92Y talk last night. It started with Peta and ended with Andre’s blogging. {NYMag}

Dig Deep: Ali from The City gets questioned. She really likes Splenda and scented candles and ended up on the show after Adam was cast. {Nylon}

Suzy Says: Suzy Menkes took a trip to SF. Alas, she doesn’t have time for tweets. {FabSugar}

Trendspotting: There’s a Ribbon on the Runway For Our Love

ribbons at fall 09 fashion week trendspotting trends.jpgCuriously, amid knee-high boots, neon, cut-outs, and body-con dresses, some designers were thinking of present packaging for their Fall 09 designs.

Behnaz Sarafpour, Badgley Mischka, J Mendel and even Christopher Kane worked ribbons into a few of their looks - A touch that seems rather girly for a season that also saw three pairs of actual pants from Marchesa, no?

My First Fake Louis, In One Act

my fake louis wallet small.jpg[Britt and Natalie sit in the backseat of a cab, on their way to the Doo.Ri Under.Ligne launch, last night. Taped to the back of the cab’s partition is a cute drawing of a cartoon cab with the slogan “This is a happy cab” written above it.]

Britt (to Driver): West 26th Street, between…

Driver: 11th and 12th?

Britt and Natalie: Yeah…

Driver: Yes, I just took three people there, no problem!

Britt (to Natalie): Wow, this cab driver is really nice.

Natalie (to Britt): Well, it is a happy cab. [Giggle]

[Several minutes pass, during which the driver asks polite questions, laughs, and remains generally jovial while wearing his “Dooney & Bourke” baseball cap. The cab arrives at the destination. Britt exits, and Natalie waits for the receipt.]

Driver: Just one more second, sorry, it’s still printing.

Natalie: Oh, it’s ok! I really love this Happy Cab painting by the way.

Driver: Oh!

[The driver exits the car, leaving Natalie inside. As he rummages through his trunk, Natalie quietly opens the door, having decided to wait for the receipt while standing safely on the sidewalk.]

Driver: Here you go! One for everyone who mentions the Happy Cab!

[The Driver hands Natalie the small, “Louis Vuitton” wallet, at left.]

Natalie: [Making a face not unlike Jim from The Office] Oh -

Aaaaaand, scene.

Topshop’s American Studio

iekeliene_topshop_ss08b.jpgFor those who doubt Topshop is serious about coming to America, listen to this:

We hear the mega brand is scouting a few American designers to head up a small satellite “studio” for Topshop in New York.

The designers are young, cool, and totally unknown, and after a two week initiation in London that begins during LFW, they’ll come back to America and start doing their thing.

But hopefully, that won’t preclude the British designs from coming over to Manhattan’s only Topshop - obviously, that’s part of the appeal!

Your Bag

Today’s “What’s In Your Bag?”: Finger Puppets

Since we were just a little too scared to ask Anna “what’s in your bag?” we took a brief hiatus, but now we’re back!

Clearly the Fashion Week remnants are still among us, evidenced by the eclectic mix we hunted down this week. Kiki de Montparnasse, more puppies, Ralph Lauren, finger puppets, and a visit from my mommy… just a few of the reasons I heart New York!

Streetwalker: Black Out

streetwalker black out small.jpg Sara, 17

Got her: At Ninth Ave and 14th St

Stalked her: Because it’s the first wintery outfit we’ve seen in awhile. We miss black tights!

Shot her: Because with her black patent leather shoes and smart, black plaid mini, this high schooler’s dressed like a quintessential New Yorker. Plus, this is a good lesson that a monochrome outfit doesn’t have to be boring - her shoes and the texture of that dress add just the right amount of interest.

She says: “I just moved from Sydney. It’s only my fifth day in the city!”

We say: Welcome to New York - you already fit in.
