September Nightlife

mfl-fashion[1].jpgWe are so excited for September.

While the official list won’t be released until August 17th, we just received a huge rundown of events for Fashion’s Night Out, the New York City fashion celebration this September 10th. Over 300 retailers in all five boroughs have already signed up to party from 6pm to 11pm. We’re a little overwhelmed by it…in a good way.

We already told you about Alex Wang at Barney’s. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Also at Barney’s? The Olsen twins (girl crush times two!), Jonathan Adler and Lisa Perry, on hand to teach you how to knit. After you learn, you can knit a square to be included in a blanket to be sold to benefit the September 11th Memorial Fund.

Men on The Row

ashley olsen in the row.jpgThe Row, one of the only celebrity lines that manages to overcome the “celeb” part of their story even though the creatives behind it have sold more US Weekly covers than Mandy Moore, has decided to quietly expand into menswear, much like many other womenswear designers as of late.

The 35 piece collection should hit stores this Fall, ranging from t-shirts for $230 and overcoats for $3,200 (and if that second price just made you laugh, consider that their current line includes a $6,000 trench that looks like it was made exclusively for Catherine Deneuve).

Clearly, the women’s side of The Row has been doing very well if the Olsens think expanding into such high-end menswear is a good idea. Ashley claims most people don’t know it’s her behind The Row but we wonder if her tween-association will be a bigger issue with the menswear rather than the women’s - after all, we’re not so sure grown men want to wear expensive pants designed by the same girls whose DVDs are stacked in their daughters’ bedrooms.

Stella’s for Kids, Silly

Stella McCartney Gary Card Collab.jpgIf you’re in London today, you must swing by Stella McCartney’s Bruton St. store.

Yes, you’ll probably want to try on every sweater dress in site, but you’ll also want to watch set designer and illustrator Gary Card produce a live art installation in the window.

Using nothing but colored pencils, he’ll “create over-layered drawings of animals, dinosaurs, superheros and fantasy inspired characters on children’s wardrobes in his typically naive and charming signature style,” according to Vogue UK.

We thought this sounded vaguely familiar and picked up the copy of Influence we fell asleep reading last night. Sure enough, Peter Beard tells the Olsens, “I’m doing a very nice quiet project with Stella called “A Children’s World” — African animals, African drawings on wallpaper, pajamas, pillowcases, stationary.”

Between these collaborations, a cartoon set, and a profound amount of Tootsie Pops wherever she goes, we think we’ve pegged Stella’s new target customer.

Getting in on the Olsen Frenzy

influence book cover one half.jpgNo doubt you know all about the Olsen frenzy at the Union Square Barnes & Noble today, complete with special rules for those hoping to get a minute in front of each twin while they sign their new book, and the requisite PETA protesters outside.

But you’re probably wanting more, no?

So here it is. Just for you, we’ve scanned Mary-Kate’s handwritten Proust questionnaire, and transcribed Ashley’s introductory essay - NYLON’s got MK’s version - after the jump.

So don’t say we’ve never done anything for you.

Hugs.

ps. We really do highly suggest ordering the book for yourselves.

MK + A Heart Lauren Hutton

lauren hutton looks amazing.jpgIs Lauren Hutton kind of having a modeling comeback?

First she smiled for Mango’s Fall 08 ads, and now Mary-Kate and Ashley have announced that she’ll front one of their own labels, too (we think it’s safe to assume it’s The Row - and yes, we’re going solely by age.)

The twins picked Hutton, who’s also one of the subjects in their new book Influence, not just for the campaign (so we guess there’s going to be a campaign - for Spring?) but also for “catwalks” - So the The Row’s going to have a fashion show? Does that mean they’ll show at Fashion Week?

So many questions.

In any case, Hutton’s quite a change from the girl used in their promotional video for Holiday, no?

MK&A at B&N, Live! Next Week!

olsen twins influence book cover.jpgSpeaking of the the Twin’s new book - which, we should note, seems to be a hit already - here’s some great news for all you stalkers out there:

Mary-Kate and Ashley are following in Isaac’s recent footsteps, and making a real-life appearance at the Union Square Barnes & Noble this Tuesday (October 28), at 12:30pm, to promote Influence.

They’ll read from the book (we expect them to switch off), and everyone in the crowd will snap away like good little Gossip girls and boys, and we’re totally going to sit front row if it kills us.

It’s like Fashion Week, but with books. See you there!

DIY

DIY: Make Me an Olsen

hayleys diy.jpgWe have massive girl crushes on the Olsens, they probably developed ten years ago, probably while watching Billboard Dad.

Regardless of which goth, hippie or just plain crazy phase the twins are in, our girl crushes are still going strong today and have, of course, transfered to their fashion line, Elizabeth and James, and pretty much everything they touch.

We especially love this Pave Tee, but at $265 it’s a little (okay, a lot) more than we’d ever spend on a t-shirt. So we devised a pretty easy DIY.

You’ll need a gray American Apparel t-shirt, silver sequins and a needle and thread - or if you’re lazy like us, fabric glue. If gray isn’t exactly your color you can substitute purple, pink, black, whatever your heart desires - that’s the beauty of a DIY.

Lie the t-shirt flat and commence either sewing or gluing the sequins onto the sleeves of the t-shirt. We found that a haphazard pattern looks best and takes the least amount of skill. Slip a piece of paper or cardboard inside the sleeve to ensure proper drying. Wait a few minutes for the glue to settle.

Then slip it on and poof, you’re an Olsen.

Olsens + Robert Lee Morris = Elizabeth & James Jewelry

robert lee morris ring.jpgRobert Lee Morris, winner of two CFDA awards and longtime Donna Karan collaborator, is working on a jewelry line for Elizabeth & James.

According to WWD, MK + A are longtime fans of Morris’ jewelry, which ranges from blurred dollar sign earrings to rings with crosses.

His work has appeared in ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, and will be part of the Elizabeth & James label sometime this summer.

The line will consist of “silver and brass dagger necklaces, amorphous knuckle rings and edgy earrings” - expect to see Mary-Kate decked out in every piece during Fashion Week.

Simon Doonan Hearts MK + A!

Mary Kate Olsen We hear Barneys New York might have some very special visitors this fall:

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen!

The super twins are in talks with the super store for a PA - that’s personal appearance - on behalf of their line, The Row.

If they make it, they won’t be the first sisters to hold court at a much-hyped store:

Sienna and Savannah Miller launched their line, Twenty8Twelve, at Bergdorf Goodman during Fashion Week last year, and Paris and Nicky Hilton teamed up a few years ago to launch some Tinkerbell outfits for Fred Segal. And of course, Laura and Kate Mulleavy have made quite a few appearances on behalf of their own collection, Rodarte.

Does this mean Hilary and Hayley Duff will be at Bendels by Spring ‘09?

Got Her: On Mercer, heading to the place to be today - the post office on Greene.

Stalked Her: Because we’ve never seen a real woman wear such an Olsen-esque piece of clothing and not look ridiculous.

Shot Her:Because beyond the fur and the plaid, she had on some pretty awesome jewelry like the lapis stone bracelet, a snake bangle and horsebit thingy. Plus, we love an oversized clutch.

She Says: “Thank god I killed that bear! (awkward silence) Just kidding! It’s totally fake. Um, I guess my style is homeless chic?”

We Say: The style’s actually called Olsen.

What’s Your Fashion Faux Pas?

marykate fashion.jpgWe all know some of the rules of fashion, however antiquated they usually are - no white after Labor Day, no open-toed shoes until Memorial Day, no mixing of gold and silver, etc.

But if you actually follow all that, then you’re probably 90. And boring.

We like to think everyone has at least one fashion faux pas of their own that they rock to no abandon. The rule that short girls should avoid maxi skirts and dresses doesn’t stop either Olsen twin, and you know what? They always look amazing doing it - but if anyone else tried, they’d surely end up on US Weekly’s Worst Dressed. Lindsay Lohan doesn’t exactly get a lot of praise for keeping the cut-off leggings of 2003 alive and well, but at least she’s wearing what she loves.

If there were paparazzi camped outside Fashionista, we already know what would be mocked - Natalie for her shorts with tights, Britt for wearing black and navy, and Jazzi for her side ponytails… but we wear them with no apologies.

You know you all have one, too, and believe it or not, we really do want to know.

What’s your fashion faux pas?

Did You Know It’s LA Fashion Week?

Veronika Jeanvie LA Fashion Week.jpgWe feel like we should officially mention that it’s LA Fashion Week.

Well, it’s almost over now, but it’s been highlighted by celebu-spawn designs by Lauren Conrad and Nicky Hilton, and front row appearances by Sean William Scott and Jenna Jameson (No love from Lisa Love, LC?). Even as an LA native, intern Jazzi has to admit she has never paid much attention to the West Coast mini to-do, and never had the urge to go hang outside of Culver City’s Smashbox Studios or sneak into shows like she might consider for Bryant Park (Though this season Erin Fetherston did host a party she would have liked to attend).

We think the fact that the Pussycat Dolls’ lingerie line showed in the closing slot says a lot about the way things go in LA. Well, that and the fact that LA’s most notable talents, Monique Lhullier and Jenni Kayne, show in New York.

We get that LA is not a “Fashion Capitol” and more of a “Lifestyle City”, but as hard as it tries to be legitimate, we wish we could expect a little bit more. We know there’s a lot of talent to be had. After all, LA did give us the Olsens, Jenny Lewis, Santino, Jeffrey, and Rami.

Still, every season we wonder if LA will finally get its day in the fashion spotlight… but then we get back to daydreaming at the beach.

Quote of the Day

“It was Mary-Kate who first emerged as a style icon. Three years ago, when the twins started at New York University, she took to slinking around in enormous shaggy sweaters, huge hats and oversized sunglasses…she’s said that she wore these mish-moshed costumes mostly to stay warm” - The official explanation for MK’s NYU outfits, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.
Quote of the Day

“Category: Common Bonds. Answer: Gemini, Minnesota, Olsen. Question: What are twins.” - from Jeopardy yesterday, minutes before contestants were asked to name the mother of Rumer Willis.

Chanel Gets Both Olsens

0705olsens.jpg It seems Karl Lagerfeld has ended his bizarre “feud” with Ashley Olsen:

The tiny mogul and her twin sister both showed up at the Chanel show this morning, highly guarded and looking rather sprightly (and spritely, but that’s probably due to the fairy princess trend of the season).

MK + A were joined by Rihanna and a lot of French girls in the front row, but you could tell they were the Americans because they refused to take off their sunglasses the entire time.

As for the collection itself, it was sort of great - very young, nipped at the waist or slouched and super-short, lots of light gray and light blue and black, basically the way we want to look every day but for a lot more money.

A lot of the models wore huge glasses and everyone had dirty hair.

Sarah Lawrence, your time has come.

Blasberg + McQueen: Party Monsters

derekbb.jpg New York reports that Derek Blasberg will ghost-write the new Mary Kate and Ashley book, but we can report something different:

That Derek will host Mary Kate and Ashley, plus The MisShapes and the misfits and Ben Cho and Lily Donaldson, at a Paris party this Sunday.

The bash is also thrown by Opening Ceremony (the store responsible for Chloe Sevigny’s line) and GrandLife NYC (even though we’re in Paris). It’s at Paris Paris, which is probably one of the most fun places we’ve danced in the whole world.

If you’re in Paris, zoom on down.

Oh, and Derek’s not the only one holding court this week:

Today, Alexander McQueen and his posse headline the notorious Don’t Tell My Booker bash, which is usually a coke-fueled streak of “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I did that” - albeit, not for the models walking in Lanvin, etc, on the weekend.

Who’s Catherine Holstein?

Catherine Holstein.jpgWhen we were getting our Fashion Week thoughts together, we barely registered the name “Catherine Holstein” on the line up, but had a vague enough memory of her cute/retro designs in Teen Vogue to know it might be fun to go.

Then we noticed her slot’s kicking off the hipsterest day of them all, also known as next Thursday.

Now, we hear her presentation was such a popular request for next week, it’s officially closed off to any more people who think they can snag an invite.

One year ago, no editor could have picked this girl out of a line up of blonde designer wannabes, and now it looks like she might be the next leader of the Parsons Mafia.

Guess it pays to be friends with sisters whose names end in Traina or Olsen.

We Buy For the Covers

Ashley Olsen NYLON.jpgToday’s WWD discusses the art of magazine covers, what sells and what doesn’t.

Like, big flowing hair blows Allure off the newstands, while smiling girls weighed down by accessories sells Seventeen.

Apparently everyone has their own way of determing what’s a good cover - Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief Kate White says that she knows a cover is good if she wants to “lick it,” further noting, “The Beyoncé [December 2007] cover I licked several times…before the sun came up.”

For us, it’s more about who is on the cover - whenever we see an Olsen (no matter which one), we have to stop and check out the interview - and we once learned during an internship that whenever Sandra Bullock is on a magazine cover, it far outsells more interesting (but less “regular”) cover girls, like Sienna Miller.

Does what (or who) you see on a magazine cover compel you enough to actually pay the cover price? Or do you stick to your subscriptions (or the internet!) only?
