We’re all pretty well-versed in the recent onslaught of news regarding the economy and shopping - consumer confidence is down, sales are down, parties are down, etc.
And recently, the news has been all about how much everybody plans to spend, or not spend, this holiday season. Guess what? Polls show that most people plan to spend less, look for more sales, and, according to the National Retail Federation, almost 70% of those polled said they’ll be doing they’re holiday spending at discount stores.
But since our reaction to polls are usually more like, “How come I wasn’t polled? Were you polled? Why am I never polled for anything ever, and yet made to believe every poll I read?” So we thought we’d ask you guys for responses we know are real, especially since you’re who we talk to most about shopping, anyway.
So, what are you doing this holiday season? Are you going to spend less, more? Will you shop at Barneys, Macy’s or the dollar store? Will you spend as much as last year? More?
And here’s something else to think about: According to the Wall Street Journal yesterday, 8% of 1,000 Americans polled said they would spend more this holiday season if Obama became the President, claiming even that the election was the most decisive factor in their holiday spending, more important than even stock market news and job security - does that hold true for you, too? Or do you perhaps think polls are crap in general?
Because really, we actually do want to know.

Spotted (everywhere): Sarah Palin’s daughter carrying a fake Speedy.
I can only assume the girl was just hanging onto her mother’s purse for her, but either way, this means Sarah Palin doesn’t care about American designers (think that bag was made in Alaska?) or counterfeit goods (what would Bush’s new copyright czar say to her? Or the judge that just awarded LV $3.5 M?).
At least it couldn’t have been too big a chunk from her $150,000 allowance..
Think it’s too late for her to carry a FEED bag?
xo
Hey, did you know we vote in the next President in about five weeks?
Because if you work in fashion (or if you own a TV, buy newspapers, etc) there’s no way you could’ve missed it.
Way back in August, it was announced that a bunch of very cool designers (Zac, Marc, the Costello boys, the Rag & Bone boys, Narciso.. - and we don’t think we need to tell you Alexander designed the long tank at left) would produce some cool merchandise for Barack Obama’s official online store. And now that it’s up, we’re amazed they talked Marc all the way down to $75 for one of his bags (a canvas tote).
Then during Fashion Week, Barack pins became a hip accoutrement, as seen at Doucette Duvall and Rachel Roy (literally), to name a few.
Then Anna jumped in with that huge fundraiser, and Michelle Obama reciprocated by wearing fashion favorite (but mainstream nobody) Thakoon on the national stage twice, and now Marc’s decorated his Bleecker Street storefront with not just Obama love, but Biden caps to boot.
So, is it helping out fashion’s favorite candidate for President? Guess we won’t know for a few more weeks. But in the meantime, we really wonder whether there are any McCain supporters among the fashion designer set, and what kind of excuses they have to give when approached to design Obama totes and tees…
Some politics:
New York State Representative Anthony Weiner is looking out for foreign models hoping to work in NYC. He’s worried that the current immigration policy, which lumps non-American models together with highly in-demand non-American computer engineers both looking for work in the US, is edging all the foreign beauties out.
Rep. Weiner argues that the photoshoots these models participate in are precious to the New York economy, and keeping them out doesn’t create opportunities for American models - instead, it just means that photographers will take their shoots overseas. So he’s pushing for foreign models to be moved into another visa category, P-4, the one reserved for athletes and entertainers.
According to his report, the government used to issue more than double the number of visas to aspiring foreign models than what was issued last year, back when the number of high-tech workers was much lower. As a result, more computer geeks, less babes.
His bill was cleared last week, though it still needs to get through the Senate before taking effect.
Funniest part of the bill: It states that “the visiting model must be “of distinguished merit and ability.” We think that’s nice talk for 5’10” and over, and, well, you know…
We know Urban Outfitters sometimes makes shirts with stupid sayings, but this one really takes the cake -
The mega-chain had to halt sales of a certain new tee after pretty much everybody reacted in outrage.
The shirt features a Palestinian boy (which can be deduced by the Palestinian flag and map of Palestinian territories next to him), crouched, holding a large gun with a couple friends behind him doing the same, with the word “Victimized” beneath him, and “Fresh Jive” above him (the shirt was actually designed by Fresh Jive, a company out of LA), and a white dove near the top.
Urban has come out and said that they didn’t mean to upset anyone, and have pulled the shirt from shelves and their website completely. Fresh Jive has this response to criticism on their site.
But no word on why they apparently thought this was funny or ironic or whatever they thought in the first place.
