Vending Machines Get Arty

pringleshirtartbasel.jpgThere are many reasons we really want to go to Art Basel in Miami. From (of course) the art to the beyond chic crowd and parties. And just the general fun one can have in sunny Miami because you know, “Miami, Miami, you’ve got style. Blue skies, sunshine, white sand by the mile…” (If you get that reference, we’re pretty much automatically friends.)

But I digress. We just learned about another cool thing that will be at the upcoming Art Basel: a super swanky vending machine at the Mondrian Hotel filled with special edition goodies curated by Interview magazine.

Inside you’ll find this Pringle of Scotland t-shirt (pictured) designed by artist David Shrigley, hand-drawn Vena Cava shoes, art from the Gossip Girl set, old archival issues of Interview, and even an out-of-print copy of the Fabien Baron art directed Madonna Sex book.

So much better than the Doritos and Snickers you usually find in a vending machine.

Karlie’s World Domination

karlie lands dior ss10.jpgJohn Galliano let slip that Karlie Kloss is his girl for Spring 2010.

She won’t front Galliano (whose ads never appear stateside), but Dior. The designer launched his eponymous “timepiece range” in Paris last night and told WWD he’d been very busy casting the spring campaign.

But really, how hard can it be to cast the girl who’s cast in everything?

This season, Karlie’s in ads for Chloé, Uniqlo, Marc Jacobs’ Lola, Lacoste, Pringle of Scotland and Sportmax. She’s also holding down editorials in almost every single magazine, including a grand total of four in this month’s Vogue alone. So Dior’s probably just the start of her spring rounds which makes one wonder a) when she goes to school and b) how it’s possible to be over a girl before she’s eighteen.

Trendspotting: Lemon Zest

lemon zest trendspotting.jpgOverall, New York Fashion Week kept to a very neutral palette, but when color was needed designers went straight for neon yellows and lime greens to brighten their quiet visions of spring.

We spotted it at Jonathan Saunders, Brian Reyes and Marc by Marc, of course. But Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi of Preen, Yigal Azrouel and Clare Waight Keller at Pringle all paired their bright yellows with dove grey for a pretty fresh look that even I (I never wear color) would consider working into spring.

Saatchi Gets Pringled

PRINGLE SS10 .jpgPringle threw their return to London party at the Saatchi gallery on Monday night.

They didn’t just present their Spring/Summer 2010 collection, but also debuted a short film by Ryan McGinley and starring Tilda Swinton. It featured the mythical looking actress running across the Scottish Highlands, climbing castle walls, sneaking through tunnels and eventually disappearing into the ocean - all while wearing a long, flowing gown.

We stood in a white room while it projected onto two opposite walls and since everyone was facing different directions it was perfectly acceptable to alternate watching the gorgeous film with catching Tilda and Ryan hug or staring at Cecilia Dean’s shoes or checking out the details on Mark Ronson’s suit.

When the show did start, in yet another super long white room, the clothes were easy - in a good way. Clare Waight Keller showed chunky knits over slinky t-shirt dresses, crocheted dresses layered over slips, sheer tops with trenches, slouchy pants and crinkled metallic shorts.

They’ve come a long way from inventing the twinset.

A Partnership of Scots

tilda swinton lands pringle campaign.jpgPringle’s magical trio of hipness - Lydia Hearst, Daisy Lowe and Pixie Geldof - has been replaced with none other than Tilda Swinton.

The three heiresses landed at Pringle at the end of last year when the almost two hundred year old Scottish knitwear brand had a slight identity crisis and focused all their efforts on attracting a younger customer. The girls starred in a beautifully shot black and white ad campaign and walked the AW09 show in Milan, but sounds like it didn’t work so well.

We can’t really imagine anyone so different from the three as Fashion’s beloved Swinton and even Pringle’s CEO said of the fellow Scot, “We don’t want to go away from [our traditional customers] — we believe Tilda is more inclusive, as both young and more mature people identify with her acting.”

Jonathan Saunders Joins the Club

j saunders aw09.jpgJonathan Saunders will join his Brit friends at London Fashion Week this September.

He, like Burberry, Pringle and Matthew Williamson before him, will return to the UK in honor of the British Fashion Council’s 25th anniversary after showing in New York for the past couple of years.

The BFC’s averaging about one glorious return per week and considering LFW doesn’t start until September there’s room for about twelve more to change their mind.

Between this, the recession and the move from the Natural History Museum to Somerset House we’re expecting major changes for fall - here’s hoping the BFC’s grand celebrations make for one serious week long party.

Pringle of Scotland Moves to London

magdalenainpringleofscotland.jpgLondon Fashion Week has added another show to its lineup. Pringle of Scotland (who have been showing in Milan) will join Matthew Williamson and Burberry back in the UK to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the British Fashion Council and the company’s own 195th birthday.

And it sounds like they may be staying put at LFW as part of a new direction for the company.

We’re looking forward to seeing this “more sensual, feminine” look in the newest ads, shot by Fabien Baron and starring Karlie and Mark Cox.

“It felt like the time for a new approach, and we wanted to bring in a different mood — one of sensuality and delicacy, with sultry undertones,” Creative Director Claire Waight Keller told WWD.

As long as they keep making those yummy knits, we think this all sounds fantastic.

Lydia Hearst: Lost & Found

lydia hearst goes to cairo.jpgLast week, Lydia Hearst told me she’d be walking two shows this season: An unnamed exclusive in Madrid and of course, Pringle of Scotland in Milan as one of the brand’s new faces.

But you guys noticed that Lydia was MIA in Milan, even though Pixie, another new Pringle face, sat front row.

Apparently, it’s because she’s off to Cairo on a mission for Operation Smile with her sister and brother-in-law. The heiress and model is this year’s official ambassador for the charity, and we guess she got her date book a bit mixed up.

Anyway, as for us, we’re off to Paris! Tomorrow look for tweets on just how many LVMH-ers are in Gareth’s front row.

Trendspotting: Leg-of-Mutton Sleeves

leg of mutton sleeves trend for fall 09.jpgThose Balmain shoulders, the sharp eighties silhouette Christophe Decarnin so successfully reinvented last season, popped up on almost every runway, from Behnaz to Topshop, from Herve to Pringle. But a few designers weren’t satisfied with mere shoulder pads and actually ballooned their silks into real life leg-of-mutton sleeves.

Roksanda Ilincic’s silver, almost angular sleeves added an edge to her glamourous pastel shifts while Dolce & Gabbana’s worked in the opposite direction. Their rounded shoulders gave linear dresses womanly curves.

Julien Macdonald’s steroid sleeves are a bit less dramatic but maintain the bubbly upper arm that skinnies at the elbow - because a sleeve of Dolce’s proportions on Macdonald’s already 80’s-loving, zippered, bedazzled mini might be a bit much.

Pringle Anoints A “Troika”

pixie geldof and daisy lowe for pringle.jpgPringle of Scotland’s recruited Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof and Lydia Hearst to pose in their Fabien Baron-directed Spring ad campaign.

Someone’s having an identity crisis.

The “troika” of It-girls, (and never has “it” meant nothing more than the sum of daddy’s money), star with two actual models in the black and white, sixties style spread shot by Steven Meisel.

Pringle says, “We were looking at iconic faces and Pixie Geldof had been on our radar for a little while, and then we started looking at the friends she hangs with….I liked the feeling of reality…it’s not just pulled together for an ad campaign.”

We say, “If you’re revamping your image to appeal to a younger demographic, just say it. Please don’t call Pixie Geldof’s face iconic. Please don’t assume Lydia Hearst hangs out with Pixie just because they’re both rich and please don’t pretend your carefully calculated ads are snapshots of reality. And please continue to use models.”

On another note, Adidas is adding Jeremy Scott to its list of “celebrity faces” fronting the Spring 09 ad campaign which begs the very important question, do actual real-life customers even know who people like Jeremy Scott, Pixie Geldof, Harley Viera Newton, etc, are?

Because companies are shelling out way more dollars for these people than they would for unknown and gorgeous models, and we’re dying to know - is it worth it?
