Would You Wear Your Prom Dress Again?

the prom to beat all proms.jpgIt’s prom time.

Stores are full of floor length tafetta, there are stretch limos in Times Square and teen based TV shows are heading toward their high school gym.

Which of course makes us think about our prom. I spent three weeks searching for the fifteen pound, multi-colored, wannabe Britney Spears costume that will haunt me forever. Abby wore a hot pink sequined number with matching press-on nails, custom dyed shoes and sparkly hose (Ed Note: The year was 1993. I swear it was cool, not tragic then). Britt wore a short black Audrey Hepburn-esque dress with tulle petticoats - clearly the smartest of us three.

There’s a slim chance I’d wear mine, if it turned into a mini and had a leather jacket over it. Abby will don hers as soon as she gets invited to an-original-90210-90’s-prom-themed party and Britt did re-wear hers to a formal in college.

The question eventually becomes, can you still fit into it? But prom is such a major moment and the dress is kind of the whole point. So whether it was ten months or ten years ago, will you ever wear it again?

Heatherette Break-Up: Bogus?

heatherette duo.jpgWe all know there’s been a ton of rumors lately that Richie Rich and Traver Rains are walking on separate yellow brick roads these days, but some recent developments might prove otherwise -

First, the glitter boys shot a prom-themed spread for ELLEgirl with Lydia Hearst right after the rumors of their demise swirled Gossip Girl-style all over the internet.

Now, we’ve learned that they’re flying out to LA with Paper Magazine today as special guests at Playboy’s Playmate of the Year Luncheon since they custom designed the winning bunny’s dress - and we were told this by a concerned Heatherette fan that wanted to help “squash the rumors.”

So now the real question is - are these one-time events for the sake of the good old days?

Or can we all expect a blowout show in September?

Fashion Is Fun

A McClintock For A McQueen

prompics.jpgI’ve always meant to donate my prom dresses to someone or some organization.

But I never know where or how, so my closet still houses one long, red gown and one short, black dress that I thought made me look exactly like Audrey Hepburn. I promised my parents I’d wear both again and again, but I’m pretty sure they’re still in their dry cleaning bags.

Thankfully, Hearst Magazines is launching a new website called DonateMyDress.org because not everyone can “look like the cast of ‘Gossip Girl’ at prom.”

It links all the national charities for recycling formal gowns. If all it takes is typing in a zip code to locate the closest drop off, there’s no reason to hang on to too small prom dresses.

So give them your Jessica Mclintock and who knows? Karma in the form of an Alexander McQueen gown would be very welcome.
