The More Binns the Better

karlie kloss in tom binns.jpgTom Binns is a busy busy man.

The jeweler extraordinaire, whose Paris showroom is probably packed at the moment is working on bags for spring - or one bag in particular under his own name. It’ll be white leather, covered in studs, and available in three sizes according to WWD.

But he’s also working on a bag in collaboration with Corto Moltedo, the “Sunday Bag,” smothered in gold crucifix necklaces. Then there’s the soccer themed bags and jewelry with Puma for the World Cup and a collection of wearable sculptures for Art Basel.

It’d be much easier to make time for DIYs if Binns could spare a few minutes to teach us arts and crafts. Maybe we’ll just have to buy this, for inspiration, instead.

Clean Sweeping for a Cause

hot pink nick kirkwoods.jpgBefore you balk at giving up your shoes, think of that hot pink pair of heels in the back of your closet that you wore to one party and haven’t touched since. Then, consider a good cause.

PUMA’s partnering with charity Soles4Souls, a charity that donates shoes to 125 countries in need, from June 15 to July 20. They’re asking shoppers to donate any lightly worn shoes at PUMA locations and receive 30% off for new PUMA kicks.

They’re even setting up two massive 10-foot tall donation boxes for people to donate their shoes and snag a pair of Soles4Souls flip-flops with their discount - one in Union Square on June 15 and the other on the Santa Monica Pier on June 23.

We’ve been having trouble closing our closet anyway, so needless to say, we’re in.

PUMA City Pop Up Shop

puma city.jpgWe were in Boston yesterday, not shopping or playing, but hanging out at PUMA City.

The Volvo World Race, a hardcore nine month sailing extravaganza that kicked off in Alicante, Spain last October and ends in St. Petersburg, Russia this June, is docked in Boston for three weeks. Puma, a major sponsor of the whole race, has its own boat and team, too - they’re currently placed second.

A mini-village is constructed at each port and the centerpiece of this one is PUMA City - a pop up shop literally made out of the shipping containers it’s sent around the world in. The three-story, red structure’s open to the public and boasts a bar, a souvenir shop full of race wear, a Puma shoe store and a Puma apparel store full of exclusives like bikes, official sailing gear and new artist collaborations.

Sergio Rossi + Puma = Sneakers + Heels

sergio rossi for puma pull.jpgWhen we heard from our Inbox that Puma and Sergio Rossi were collaborating on a capsule collection to be sold at Colette starting January, we got excited. We like Sergio. We like Puma. We love Colette. So this should work.

But:

They’re sneaker-heels. The last time I wore sneaker-heels, I was about ten and going through my Spice Girl phase - since then, I thought we all decided any sort of shoe that tries to combine high-heels with sneakers was out of the question, so much to our surprise, Sergio and Puma are doing just that.

We’re not exactly sure where one wears sneakettos, but we do know that considering the purple satin lace-ups and Mary-Janes with gummy white soles, we won’t be wearing the collection anytime soon.

It’s too bad. We love the parts (Sergio, Puma, Colette), but the sum, well, we’ll save our kicks cash for Lacroix + Gola.

The Comics Are Coming…

pop print.jpgMonths after the Costume Institute announces it’s big ball theme - Comic Book Chic - and already we’re seeing it reverberate in the mass market.

To the left is an upcoming print from Puma; to the right is a hoodie from Topshop. They’re almost identical, and they’re not the only Pop prints you’ll see this Spring and Summer.

This is on top of the runway masks at Marc, Luella, and Alexander McQueen, and past the editorials in Bazaar and V that literally turn comic books into fashion spreads.

And if Vogue isn’t sponsoring a Lichtenstein exhibit in the next year, then our Magic 8 Ball is totally, totally busted.

Big Bags - A Soliloquy

handbag.jpgEveryone - mainly the New York Times followed by the Wall Street Journal’s usual lag - is worried about the effects of big bags on women’s backs and shoulders. Yes, this could be a problem. But I’m kind of worried about the women who carry small bags - where do they put all their stuff?

I’ve carried a big bag around for as long as I can remember (or at least as long as I haven’t been carrying my red Jansport), and I never thought its size was a trend so much as a necessity.

It currently holds my wallet, two books, my Moleskine calendar, two Moleskine notebooks (one big and one small), W, orange juice, an apple, endless pens and Lipsmackers, my new pink lipstick, a water bottle, some gold bangles, a hat, a sweater, the black tights I just bought, my iphone, my ipod, my keys, my Kiehl’s cucumber lotion, and a lifetime supply of bobby pins. These are all things that I need everyday when I leave my apartment early in the morning and don’t return until bed time.

The only girl I know who actually carries a small bag on a daily basis is Natalie. She’s 1/4 my size and so is her bag.

I asked her where she puts all her stuff and she said, “In college, I carried the most ridiculously huge Puma bag everywhere - by the time I graduated I had serious back problems - so now I carry my little leather bag from a market in Florence, and I just hold my notebook in my hand. If I have to bring more stuff to work I’ll bring it in a shopping bag.”

So that’s why women carry shopping bags with their lunch and their shoes and their books? Because they carry small bags?

That sounds backwards - the only way I’ll abandon my duffel sized handbags is if I don’t have anywhere to go for the day, or if I ever stop reading/using lotion/writing/drink juice/you get the point.

How big is your bag? Or, how many bags do you carry?
