Is the New New: Hips & Shoulders

beyonce-435[1].jpgAfter seeing the Richard Avedon fashion photography exhibit at the International Center for Photography, our love of fifties glamour is revived. We especially love the circle skirts that give volume to the models’ slim frames.

The fifties have certainly never disappeared from the fashion spotlight but what’s being accentuated of late, however, is the hips - going back to the Balenciaga S/S 08 runway or Galliano’s Lisa Fonssagrives-inpsired couture with its armor-like hip plates.

But it seems that the shoulders had to take their turn first.

Now that we’re all more than a little sick of that Balmain jacket, the hips taking center stage, quite literally in some cases.

Sasha and Carine brought the look to the beach and the past two nights, Beyoncé sang and danced in a gold Thierry Mugler leotard with padded hips at Madison Square Garden.

Seeing as this is an area of the body that often causes loads of female insecurity, do tell us, would you ever try out this look?

Adventures in Copyright: Crossing la Ligne

numeroallurekoreaAIC.jpgSølve Sundsbø shot the wonderful “Points a la Ligne” for Numéro last year in May.

We loved the Norwegian photographer’s eerie and sexy spread featuring a pancaked Edita Vilkeviciute’s body covered in various shadowed patterns.

Seems for the editorial’s one year anniversary Allure Korea and photographer Lee Kyung Ryul did a little more than pay homage to Sundsbø’s work in their May 2009 issue. In some of the shosts the model, Han Jin, is actually wearing clothing (unlike Edita) and they went beyond the strict geometric patterns that Sundsbø used, but it’s still unquestionably similar to the photos from “la Ligne”.

Okay, so plenty of fashion photographers have taken inspiration from any number of photographers from Avedon to Penn and so many other talents - and that’s great. But this comparison is beyond simple inspiration and comes pretty darn soon after the original shoot. Sundsbø presented a unique image that Kyung Ryul recreated nearly identically. The heights of creativity reached in contemporary fashion photography is awe-inspiring and that’s why an original perspective will just always be more interesting.

PaoloRoversi.jpgAvedon Chance: The International Center of Photography’s launching a Richard Avedon exhibition next week. It focuses on his work in fashion in particular from 1944 to 2000. {TheMoment}

Fairy Dust: Pixie Geldof’s interning at LOVE. Apparently she talks too much and befriended a meerkat — or they’re just as fun and silly as we thought. {LOVE}

Circus Time: Paolo Roversi shot a Lucinda Chambers-styled Guinevere Van Seenus for the new Vogue UK. The results - gorgeous, if not a little creepy - make us wish shirts were optional in real life. {Models}

Time Will Tell: Just in case you still have hundreds of thousands of dollars handy and you’re shopping around for a pretty watch, VF’s lined up some winners. {VanityFair}

Fashion Is Fun

Add Fashion to Your Queue

fashiondvd.jpgUpon searching for the Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton documentary on Netflix (one of the main reasons I got a subscription), I came across some other fashion fun.

It turns out Netflix really does have everything. Aside from Prêt-à- Porter, Lagerfeld Confidential, and Richard Avedon : Darkness and Light, they also have some more literal fashion DVDs available, too.

Type in “fashion”
and you’ll get a series by Fashion TV split up by type of clothes (haute couture, RTW, menswear, leatherwear, etc), city and season (though right now, they seem to only have 2004 and 2005), so you can reminisce about collections past from your couch.

These probably shouldn’t be moved up to the top of your queue, but they may make for a nice visual to fall asleep to. Dreaming of tulle, male models, and Paris never hurt - it’s kind of like Fashion Trance, which yes, we’re still mourning.

Hearst: Are You the New Avedon?

richard avedon photo.jpgThe Hearst Corporation is looking for the next standout (and as of yet undiscovered), bust out photographer, and their doing it in competition style.

They’ve just announced the beginning of their Hearst 8 x 10 Photography Biennial Competition, for which photographers with at least 2 years of professional experience can apply for the chance to be one of eight lucky winners whose work ends up showcased in the Hearst Tower lobby - and smack in front of the eyes of judges like David Granger, Donna Karan, Peter Lindbergh, and a few other people capable of making a young photographer’s career a living possibility.

You can apply between now and January on the competition’s site.

And good luck - we could use more than oases backdrops and hopping models in our magazines.

Dovima, Marilyn and Elephants, Oh My!

richard avedon dovima elephants.jpgIf you’re lucky enough to be going to Paris (whether it’s for Fashion Week, a vacation, or you just happened to get on the wrong plane) be sure to see the first French solo exhibition of Richard Avedon, famed fashion photographer and portraitist.

We all remember the stunning Dovima, dripping in Dior and looking oh-so glamorous while posing between a pair of circus elephants - and now you can study it up close and in person.

Why Avedon has had so few solo exhibitions, despite working for Bazaar, Vogue, and The New York Times for several decades, we have not a clue, but here he is now, and so conveniently timed with the arrival of the fashion flock.

We could go on all day about his work but to cut right to the point: The exhibition of his work, ranging from 1946 - 2004 is on display at the Jeu de Paume through Sept. 28th, so if you find yourself in the city of lights for Paris Fashion Week a little early, be sure to catch this exhibition- it’ll be a nice way to ease in.

Quote of the Day

“He was larger than life. I admired him and his work even before I entered this business. He had so much energy. I kept calling him Mr. Avedon and he kept saying- please call me Dick. I said I just couldn’t do that.” - Jennifer Starr, to the Women Management Blog.

Kate for Sale

Kate Moss by Irving Penn.jpgDoes anybody have an extra $40,000 dollars laying around?

Because we’re going to need it to get a piece of Kate at next month’s Christie’s auction.

On April 10th in the middle of the afternoon, 135 prints from the private collection of German photographer Gert Elfering will go up for auction at Rockefeller Center.

Nude prints of Kate and Gisele shot by Irving Penn are among the most sought after, as are Avedon portraits of Brigitte Bardot, a semi-topless Lauren Hutton, and even The Beatles, along with prints shot by Man Ray, Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus and Horst P. Horst.

We’re kind of wondering where some of these pieces will be hung once the lucky betters take them home. Would it be in bad taste to have a naked Kate in the entry way? How about nude Gisele in the kitchen?
