Quote of the Day

“It has the obvious connotations…girl in boyfriend’s/husband’s/one-night stand’s shirt the morning after a black-tie ball. It’s very James Bond.” —Marcus Wainwright on the whole tomboy trend. We couldn’t love this sexy image more.

Trendspotting: A Leg Up

leggingstrendspotting.jpg

There was a time years back when many thought leggings were going to be a one season wonder. Well, that moment has come and gone and even most naysayers long ago embraced them. We’re actually really liking these dancer-like incarnations of mostly sheer, sometimes short, and always scrunched for Spring/Summer 2010—especially the sheer pinks and neutrals for a bit of light layering.

What about you? Are you game for another season or totally over them by now?

Random Fashion Week Sponsor #1 (And We Don’t Mean Ours)

sharpies.jpgWe love Sharpies here at Fashionista. They come in very handy with our graphic tendencies and the rainbow of colors they now come in is quite lovely. That said, we never expected to hear them attached to Fashion Week. But apparently, they are.

It was thought that perhaps MAC wanted to get out of their IMG relationship in part because of the overcrowded sponsorship mania that now goes on at the Tents. You know, with people like McDonald’s and whatnot. Um, maybe this is what they were talking about?

Life With...

Life With Denise Williamson!

life with denise williamson.jpgDenise Williamson’s been a part of New York’s fashion industry for almost twenty years.

She made it through FIT, worked in house at Calvin Klein, fooled around with showroom ideas, networked her way into one of the most successful PR and branding companies in the city and now runs the showroom, Williamson PR and Williamson Consulting.

Our discussion was meant to revolve around her day to day life, but instead it took a few philosophical turns into the state of the fashion industry and what she sees in the future. Of course, we also talk about her clients, including Trovata, Jen Kao, Kimberly Ovitz, Raf by Raf Simons and Madeleine Thompson, her kid and the fun parts of working so hard.

Streetwalker: Buffy Goes to Paris, Via Bumble

streetwalker BEA.JPGBea, Bumble & Bumble PR

Got Her: Backstage at Sharon Wauchob.

Stalked Her: Because she’s the perfect example of our, “You don’t have to wear heels to rock Paris Fashion Week” mantra.

Shot Her: Because she’s wearing an almost all-white outfit and that is very, very hard to pull off. Plus, she was Fashionista’s first ever streetwalker and we thought it was time for a sartorial update.

She Says: “One of my stylists looked at me this morning and said, ‘Bea, you’re so Buffy the Vampire Slayer! But not the show, the movie.’ So I guess that about sums it up, I think it’s all about the boots.”

We Say: Because you can’t kick fashion ass in 5” Louboutins like you can in Rag & Bone.

Jimmy Fallon and Elijah Wood: Explained

rag and bone fall 09 look pull.jpgAt the Rag & Bone show, a lot of front row chatter consisted of, “Why is Jimmy Fallon here? And was that seriously Elijah Wood just now?”

We wondered about it, too, but now, we have the official explanation:

Apparently, Jimmy Fallon is a close personal friend of Marcus and David, and we can all expect Jimmy and the band members of his late night show, The Roots, to all wears lots of Rag & Bone in the coming year.

As for Elijah, he’s the boyfriend of Pam Racine, Rag & Bone’s fit model.

And now you know.

Rag & Bone: The Show

Rag and Bone Fall 09 1.jpgTrying to make your way into the Rag & Bone show this afternoon was a little like trying to make your way through a mosh pit - impossible. There was a crowd of maybe 200+ people all trying to walk in (read: push through) the tiny entrance of the Cedar Lake venue on the west side all at the same time, only to be confronted by a teeny table of PR girls that could accommodate maybe four guests at a time, which was constantly being held up by problems with the seating chart and general unruliness on behalf of the audience members.

Anyway, once you actually did get in (if you got in - we heard quite a few people were left outside after the doors were shut), you were probably first greeted by the sight of Anna (and other people asking, “Why does she always go to Rag & Bone? They don’t advertise in Vogue, it’s not really Vogue’s cup of tea anyway - are the boy designers really just that cute?) and then Rachel Zoe backed up by her assistants, Taylor and Brad, who freaked out cheering when Sasha stepped on the runway. Also, inexplicably, both Jimmy Fallon and Elijah Wood were in attendance.

The show was typical R&B: Little vests, tight pants, and clothes that are generally unwearable for the general public, all modeled by some of the highest paid strutters in the industry (Coco, Stam, Lily D, etc).

Basically, it was exactly what you’d expect - except for maybe the upbeat music. That was a first for Fall 09.

Fashion Week Back to TV

fashion week images .jpgWe knew there’d be good Fashion Week news eventually: Full Frontal Fashion might’ve been cancelled but you’ll still be able to get a behind-the-scenes look at New York Fashion Week via a new TV show called Videofashion Daily.

They’ll be covering shows on and off site - from Rag & Bone in Chelsea to Narciso Rodriguez at the tents - from February 15th to the 26th.

No word on a front row host, though backstage beauty coverage will be led by Glamour’s Editor-at-Large Suze Yalof Schwartz. Fabiola’s got her New York Magazine front row act down pat, so it’ll need to be someone equally bubbly and nice. Suggestions?

The show will air on NYCTV from 9 - 11pm every night. Full schedule after the jump.

We’d Join Ed Westwick’s Movement

ed westwick teen vogue photo shoot.jpgSo Gossip Girl’s a re-run tonight.

Which means we/you are in desperate need of a dose of Chuck Bass and can thank Teen Vogue for this behind-the-scenes video. Of course, it’s even better when it’s a dose of Ed Westwick because then he’s British and not royally fucked up.

Westwick says of his own style, “I’d like to think it’s cool,” to which we’d respond that ripped sports jerseys are very difficult to pull off and he shouldn’t feel bad for trying. His sartorial choices are inspired by his love of music and apparently, in his Gossip Girl downtime, he has “plans to start a musical movement in New York City.”

Wearing Rag & Bone cardigans and Lady Grey necklaces is a good place to start.

Maguire Steele Needs Interns

maguiresteele needs interns.jpgMaguire Steele’s looking for interns and we think it’d be the perfect place to start.

The relatively new PR firm reps both the big, Rag & Bone, to the small, Billy Reid, to the very cool, Odin, Den, Pas de Deux.

They need interns who can work three days a week from 10am to 7pm. They’ll give you school credit if you need it, though you won’t get paid. In return, you’ll deal with the usual sample trafficking, press clipping, mailing, running errands and most importantly, for you at least, helping with all things Spring Fashion Week.

You should be excited to learn, very organized, detail-oriented and excellent at communicating. Your main interest should probably be PR though you’ll obviously need to love all things fashion, too.

So if you’ve been slacking on your intern apps, we think you should apply, take it and give us a heads up on who’ll be sitting front row at Rag & Bone this year, or maybe throw a dress or two our way.

Email your resume and cover letter to megan@maguiresteele.com.

Rag & Bone's Scattered Brain

rag and bone spring 09.jpgOne of the best things about Fashion Week is oohing and aahing over the new models. But sometimes, after a long day, you just want to see a familiar face.

So we breathed a happy sigh when the Rag & Bone runway went a little something like this: Sasha, Anja, Maryna, Coco, Stam, Julia, Lily, Kim, Behati, Cole etc.

It was just what we needed.

The collection, however, was a little loopy. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville got their inspiration from Control, the Sam Riley, (currently of Burberry ad fame), film about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. The second half of the show, sharply tailored suits, skinny, skinny pants and ties, and a shimmery fabric that really only a rock star would wear, definitely showcased that inspiration.

But the first few looks might as well have been super well-tailored pieces from Urban Outfitters. There was black; there was leather; there was the floral print from Chloe Sevigny’s Opening Ceremony line; there were zippers. We were confused.

Then we were relieved when things took a turn for the preppy with a surprising mustard jacket and that signature Rag & Bone black and navy blue color combo.

Aside from those first few looks, which could have been an entirely separate collection, the boys have a new hit line on their hands to match their new hit West Village store.

Which we’ll be visiting very soon.

Rag & Bone and Shipley & Halmos Switch

tanya d in rag and bone fall 08.jpgGood morning, and we really hope your Friday schedule isn’t back-to-back, because here’s a memo in case it is:

Rag & Bone and Shipley & Halmos have swapped time slots, with Rag & Bone now at 4pm, and Shipley now at 5pm.

If you were already going to both shows anyway, you might not care. But if you were planning on going straight to Shipley from Cushnie et Ochs or Mischen (both in Chelsea) you might not realize until you look at your invites Friday morning that Rag & Bone is all the way over on 54th at 12th Ave, with Shipley all the way back down in Chelsea.

And if you’re planning on going to Nicole Miller at 6, then you’ll find yourself making the northward trek back to the Tents if you’re trying to fit it all in.

Pack flats.

My Fashion Identity Crisis

preppy.jpgRecently, I’ve been thinking about the way I used to dress.

A few years ago, my look consisted of J.Crew oxfords, Lacoste polos, Top-Siders, seersucker and bleeding madras, and I was perfectly content. But then I came to New York, found myself surrounded by hipsters and cool kids, and had my first fashion identity crisis.

At first, it seemed just fine to go to Brooklyn in penny loafers or the LES in my funny Ralph Lauren cardigans, but as time went on, I decided my look needed to change. I can pinpoint the exact moment: a Rag & Bone sample sale, where I tried on a certain black jacket that made my friend tell me I looked like Pony Boy from The Outsiders. And just like that, it happened.

I was hooked. Suddenly, skinny pants seemed oddly apropos, and Top-Siders could infer irony, rather than preparedness for a yacht. I discovered Cheap Mondays, and down the rabbit hole I went. It was part announcing that I’d moved, part excuse to buy all new stuff, but looking back, I realize I just wanted to dress myself as the new person I knew I was becoming. (I think this may be what happens to girls, when suddenly, at fifteen, they enter hardcore eyeliner years until college.)

It wasn’t until I visited home again that my new clothes seemed like interlopers in my arch-WASP closet. I had spent most of the year trying to reconcile the two aesthetics, until I realized that all I really wanted was to climb into my chinos and be me again.

And so I did. I left my Pony Boy jacket at home, with the Marc Jacobs sweatshirt I just had to have. And now, I feel comfortable enough to say, I’m not cool, and I don’t need to be.

Guess I just needed a fashion crisis to figure it out, though I’ll save my Rag & Bone jacket forever, like baby shoes .
