Everyone’s psyched for Fashion’s Night Out, but everyone’s worried that no one’ll actually shop - or we were worried until we saw the official PSA.
You’d be hard pressed not to break out your wallet after listening to Sarah Jessica Parker beg and watching Diddy dance his way across the screen. Anna Wintour laughs, which is becoming less unusual, and Raquel Zimmermann hangs onto Alex Wang like a monkey to a tree and they’re all SO excited.
Suddenly, it makes sense to shell out for a PS 1 if Jack & Lazaro help pick the color or splurge on Elizabeth & James when Ashley tells you what fits best - especially since the night before Fashion Week all anyone wants are new clothes. Anyway, now we think this’ll be successful, and by successful we mean lucrative.
The official PSA, above. Outtakes, after the jump!
We’ve never heard Raquel Zimmermann speak so much.
And though we can’t understand a Portuguese word she’s saying (don’t worry, there are subtitles), we can understand her high energy and why, aside from the really ridiculously good looking part, everyone wants to work with her.
It’s especially fun to watch after having seen her quiet, patient professional side in The September Issue; in case you doubt models’ acting skills here’s the perfect example of two very different sides of one girl. She talks about her favorite photographers, why she bleached her hair and what she really thinks of her (not so new) look.
Agreed, Garance: I feel the pretty much the same way about tattoos. I still want one but just can’t decide what to get. Though I’m also forever grateful I never did anything ridiculously embarrassing as a teen during the 90s. Plus, this girl’s tat is way cool. {Garance}
Rain, Rain: Style.com found some fancy people who refuse to cave in to the wettest summer in the history of mankind (okay, but it feels like it) and still wear Givenchy wedges and Jane Mayle platforms. They’re fun to look at, but we’ve given up. {Style}
Double Your Pleasure: Raquel doing the masculine and the feminine thing for JPG. Well played Inez and Vinoodh. {Modelinia}
We Love the 80s: So do KT Auleta, Brian Molloy, and Missy Rayder. See how it all came together. {Dazed Digital}
Claire Danes is tying the knot, and Narciso Rodriguez, her longtime friend and frequent fashion date, is designing for her. Not even close to a shocker. We totally saw this one coming.
But naturally, this makes us incredibly nostalgic for the gorgeous Narciso-designed Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wedding dress that first brought the designer onto our radar.
It might be our favorite celebrity wedding dress ever . And this makes us very excited for what Claire’s dress will look like. I’m personally indifferent towards strict white for the dress—if someone wants it, go for it, but if not, whatever floats your boat.
Now, as stated, we will forever love love love the Kennedy dress, but we’re kind of hoping for something a little bit off the beaten path for Claire. But maybe that’s just because we’ll never stop thinking of her as Angela Chase.
Of course, we’re not talking about throwing her into plaid or 90s floral, because she has a classic style, and Narciso has a classic aesthetic. But minimalism can be quirky too, like that short white dress that Raquel wore or any of the light green numbers that came down the runway in Narciso’s fall 09 collection.
Sort of, she was the face of Tom Ford Gucci ten years ago, but the British-born, New York-living model’s been in campaigns more Lord & Taylor and Banana Republic these past couple of years. Her most recent high fashion campaign was Ralph Lauren in 2005, but Frida Giannini got swept up in London’s energy while in town to re-open Gucci’s Sloane Street store and wanted a real life English girl for her Fall 09 campaign.
Jacquetta joins the more traditional Gucci girls Natasha Poly and Freja, as well as Raquel Zimmermann who at this point is a given for pretty much every campaign.
Frida really wanted to capture the London spirit so Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are shooting the campaign in a studio in North London.
“The thing about Rick is, it’s so classic. You can buy anything from the collection and wear it forever,” declared Heidi Mount pre-show at Ecole des Beaux-Artes.
One might question that judgment when the clothes are styled a la Rick and presented in a deep dark room with feathered headdresses and leather bubble boots, but overall, she’s right. Individually, his clothes are almost subtle, definitely delicate, and so brilliantly constructed.
Which is why the cream of the fashion crop swamps his shows. Today’s front row included Carine (of course, with Julia behind her), Ikram Goldman (Michelle Obama in Rick?!), Gareth Pugh, Julie Gilhart, Franca Sozzani, Kate Lanphear, Gloria Baume, Glenn O’Brien, Bill Cunningham and Morley Safer (whom I assume means Anna, though I didn’t see her). The first rate front row matched the first rate - though noticeably white - cast: Raquel, Iris, Stam, Olga, Vlada R, Ali S, Karlie, Daiane, Sasha, Heidi, Hanne - most of whom showed up wearing at least one thing Rick.
The futuristic, sometimes sparkly collection elicited actual hooting and hollering from the audience - the most excitement I’ve heard this season (aside from Chris Kane) until the Nina Ricci crowd actually broke into applause mid-show. More on that, coming up.
When the last look came out at the Narciso show on Raquel last Wednesday night, everyone kind of oohed and we wondered who would be the first lucky girl to rock his sequined ballerina look (because we knew this one practically came with a sign that would read,”Photograph me, you know you want to”).
And everyone was right - the dress has already had its first real world appearance, at the Oscars exactly four days after its runway debut, on actress Rachel Weisz.
But now the real question remains: Who’ll be the second to wear this dress, and land themselves on Who-Wore-It-Better’s across the country?
The man’s added an edge to his trenches and sheaths. He stuck Natasha Poly in leather and more leather, threw Raquel into a sleeveless camel trench with a perfect fur collar, Frankie Rayder (!) wore sequins, Coco did tweeds, Arlenis wore a Sherlock Holmes trench, Bruna got to wear a hot pink fur coat and hat, Anja slipped by in an asymettrical chartreuse shift, Carmen Kass wore more fur than I’ve ever seen and it was almost all accessorized with perfectly chunky chain necklaces.
The clothes were particularly quiet after spring’s stripes and spots - even the neon pieces were tailored and conservative.
Front row seating was a bit mixed up - the Vogue-ttes usually get to sit by the door for a quick exit but this time Anna & Co. made their way further down the runway, across from Mario Testino, while Heidi Klum, Molly Sims and Jane Krakowski held court by the pit.
And that was about the freshest thing happening at the tents this morning. Off to Marchesa!
Warning: I didn’t have time to get coffee pre-Michael Kors, so please excuse the blurry pictures, they’re a result of my blurry head.
If, for some reason, you’ve never wanted to be a model, Coco Rocha and Behati Prinsloo are going to change your mind.
Because once you watch this, you’ll want to do anything to hang out with them for a day, an hour even.
They’ve culled together their favorite pictures from last season and made a slideshow punctuated with hysterical video moments showcasing Behati’s penchant for lip synching. And these aren’t style.com pictures - they’re fingers up the nose, food on your face, i’m-just-a-19-year-old-girl-having-fun pictures framed by ridiculously gorgeous runway clothes.
Here are the times of the live action sequences in case you want to skip through the photos: the start, 2:21, 4:25, 6:17 (our personal favorite), 9:38 and 10:19.
“Imagine these two coming in in the morning and saying, ‘Hey Andy, we’ve been assigned to work with you!’” - Andy Rooney, on one of the pictures of Caroline Trentini and Raquel Zimmermann from the Vogue spread, “Working Girl,” on 60 Minutes, during a segment on magazine ads.
WWD reports that Valentino is looking to the 90’s for the final ad campaign before his scheduled retirement.
The campaign features models Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow, who appeared as a duo frequently in the 90’s, most notably on the March 1997 cover of Vogue.
The campaign will also include Raquel Zimmerman, Anja Rubik, and male models Oriol Elcacho and Michael Gandolfi. But we’re most excited to see Shalom and Amber together again -
