New Fashion Week Venue?

mac-cosmetics-charlotte-ronson-249x300.jpg.jpegSounds like Milk Studios is going to become one of our most-visited locations come September and New York Fashion Week.

WWD reports this morning that MAC, the usual cosmetics sponsor in the tents, is negotiating to sponsor shows at Milk instead.

This is an interesting development as MAC makeup teams typically create looks for more than 60 shows during any given season. And they bring the best key artists in the business with them.

Milk is a great venue and one that has hosted many a fashion event, and show, in the past. It will be interesting to see who jumps ship from the tents and goes with MAC. Will it simply be smaller designers? Or will any of the bigs head to Milk too.

Revlon Hearts Mr. Sketch

revlon sniff nail polishes.jpgI’ve seen a lot of crazy beauty crap in my days. Fart guards, spray-on ab kits, press-on shadows - basically, nothing surprises me anymore.

Yet when Revlon’s April-launching collection of eight fruity-scented nail lacquers landed on my desk last week, all that practiced cynicism was replaced with a WTF. Nail polishes that become fruit-scented after they dry? Right. But since it’s my job, I went ahead and lightly painted my pinkie with the deep periwinkle Not So Blue-berry shade, then tentatively sniffed my nail.

I spent the rest of the afternoon compulsively inhaling my finger the way we all used to inhale Mr. Sketch’s grape markers in third grade art class, making the other Starbucks patrons around me very uncomfortable and giving myself one hell of a migraine.

At some point, while I inhaled the sickeningly addictive sweet, sweet scent of fake blueberries, I imagined the marketing meeting for this one: “So I’ve got this great idea. Nail polish you sniff. The kids’ll love it, providing they don’t get brain damage from inhalation.”

General impression: The colors are pretty, the polish goes on smooth, they didn’t chip easily and the scents are alarmingly addictive. No they don’t really fulfill any specific beauty needs, nor are they some groundbreaking development for the industry, but boy are they fun. And every now and then it’s nice to have a little bit of silliness in your routine. Now excuse me while I paint on the Mango and imagine I’m in Tahiti.

Tamara Mellon to Revlon

tamara mellon white dress.jpgWe think Revlon might be trying to revamp its image.

Not only did they bring on Gucci Westman, former head artistic Lancome honcho famous for her Fashion Week work, earlier this year, but now they’ve brought on Tamara Mellon to the Board of Directors.

The Jimmy Choo founder said she’s happy to leverage her “consumer insights and experience in the luxury fashion business” for Revlon.

So does this mean $30 mascara for a drugstore mainstay?

Maybe. But we’re pretty sure it means Revlon eyeshadow under our seat at Halston…

Gucci Westman to Revlon

gucci westman.jpgThis just in from WWD:

Gucci Westman, makup genius extraordinaire, has just been named the new Global Artistic Director of Revlon.

She ended a nearly five year-long career at Lancome, as their International Artistic Director, this past December.

She’s been widely credited with building Lancome’s bridge to Hollywood super stars and to hyping up the brand’s presence during New York Fashion Week - feats she will no doubt again perform for Revlon.

Bluefly, Revlon: What’s Going On?

revlon flair perfume.jpgThe other day, a Fashionista friend that works in finance told us, “I think Bluefly might be going out of business soon.”

We shrugged.

Today, he told us, “I think Revlon might be going out of business, too.”

So we asked, “What’s making you say this?”

He gave us a really finance-y response, that went something like this:

“Their stock is trading at an all time low, and the company has been in a free fall since last June. Typically when stocks trade below $2/share, they’re deemed very high risk. Revlon needs the reverse stock split to maintain minimum price requirements maintained by the New York Stock Exchange - it’s kind of a mask for their financial problems. They’re planning to report first quarter 2008 results on May 1, so things need to look good. Hence, the reverse stock split. It’s kind of a last ditch effort before you go bankrupt.”

So what’s going to happen to Elle MacPherson’s contract? And where would all of Bluefly’s merchandise end up?
