Fashion Is Fun

Fun Facts about Thakoon

x250.jpgThis past weekend, Teen Vogue hosted a Fashion University event for their readers who were eager to learn the ins and outs of the business.

Not only were they given the rare opportunity to visit the magazine’s editorial floor and famed fashion closet, but they also got the chance to sit down with designers like Richard Chai, Philip Crangi, and Thakoon Panichgul. In a discussion moderated by Amy Astley, Thakoon shared stories about his rise through the ranks of the industry and gave pointers to the many aspiring designers in the audience.

You may already know that his Fall 2005 presentation was the most buzzed-about of the season, or that his most famous customer is Michelle Obama. But here are some things you might not know about the designer. I definitely didn’t.

Pas de Deux Gets Chai, Yamamoto, Our Love

odin boys do a pas de deux.jpgIf you’ve spent years listening to your boyfriend/intern/best man friend rave about Odin and you’re like, “OK, I get it. Enough,” then it’s finally your turn.

Eddy and Paul, the revered team behind the beloved men’s store, opened a women’s outpost in September, called Pas de Deux on 11th between 1st and 2nd, and we finally took a moment to hang out with Paul this morning.

He showed us the tightly edited selection of Wang, Lim, Engineered Garments (an Odin favorite), Vena Cava, Coventry, etc, merchandised together for easy-to-understand shopping. The clothes, basically our dream wardrobe, are accessorized with hard-to-find shoe styles from Repetto and Loeffler Randall, sunglasses from Karen Walker and Linda Farrow, and a handful of jewelry from mostly Brooklyn designers.

For Spring, they’re introducing Coming Soon by Yohji Yamamoto and Richard Chai (who conveniently happens to be Eddy’s brother). The tiny, and gorgeous store is meant to be your dream closet, and the blue wall paper, mirrors and girly chandeliers scream Holly Golightly - a very elegant scream, of course.

If we could’ve left with an entirely new outfit - save for our motorcycle boots - we would’ve. Instead, we left with a new favorite store and big plans for our closet.

Noted At Richard Chai

RICHARD CHAI SS09.JPGWe spent some time backstage before Richard Chai showed his collection to literally all of Vogue yesterday. Here’s what we saw:

1) Models eating. A lot.

2) Four people doing Ali Stephens’ hair at once. That means eight different hands on her head, all while she played video games on her iPhone.

3) Richard Chai doing last minute fittings (shot after the jump!) A man got under a skirt to pin from the inside. Hope he knew the model.

4) Gorgeous clothes. The thinnest silk with the most delicate prints and textured details. Rows of baby sequins draped to look like liquid. Nervous dressers making sure they knew what their model looked like in person and on their board.

5) Once the show started, Lisa Love, Anna Wintour and Dani Stahl all whipped out their sunglasses in fear of runway lights. Phillip Lim whipped out real glasses in fear of missing the clothes.

6) Once the show ended, Anna smiled.

Target to Target Us

richard chai for target look love green shorts.jpgYou know how Fashion Week makes you insane with wanting to shop, but all your money’s going to cabs and coffee, so actually buying clothes is kind of impossible?

Well, Target heard us. And they’ve responded.

On September 11, Target’s opening up four pop-up shops in Manhattan, in Soho, Union Square, the East Village - and Midtown, hopefully within a block of the Tents.

The shops will include Jonathan Saunders’ line just after it comes out, Richard Chai’s, Anya Hindmarch’s bags and Sigerson’s shoes.

And if we can score a cute top for under $20, you’ll probably see us with smiles at some of those 10am appointments.

Target, Thakoon, Terrific?

cutie thakoony.jpgJust ten days after Richard Chai’s Target collection landed in stores, Glamour’s reporting that the mega-chain’s next Go International designer is editor darling Thakoon Panichgul.

We love Thakoon (and do we even have to remind you that we obsess over every collection Target puts out?) but we wonder what happened to the “International” part of the deal. Almost half the designers have been New York based - and we’d really gotten our hopes up for Jonathan Saunders.

Not to mention Alexander McQueen.

But either way, depending on when Thakoon’s collection would hit, and how much of it’s inspired by his runway, it could be interesting to see how his sexy librarian aesthetic translates into junior’s sizes at Target.

Or not.

Spotted: Chai at Target

richard chai for target early.jpgHaving a good weekend?

If not, here’s a tip - and if you are, just think of this as the icing on the cake.

A loyal spy’s just told us that the Target in Union, New Jersey has the entire Richard Chai collection right now, a full week before the official August 3rd debut.

Which means you can be wearing the floral dress we all want a week before we all have it.

Which means your Monday will be better than ours.

Richard Chai for Target!

richard chai for target.jpgWe love when images of Target’s GO International collections surface, and this time, NYLON’s got the first look - but only eight of them. You’ll have to pay up for their August issue to see the rest.

We’re especially crushing on the outfit at left, we’re already picturing the eight million different ways to wear that tank.

And can you believe that each outfit totals to around $90? Yeah, us neither.

Side note: doesn’t that white top with the orange ruffle at the neck kind of remind you of that Marc by Marc top?

But since the colors are reversed and the ruffle’s so much less, it’s actually a lot cuter and more likely to be worn -

We love Chai.

Target GOes Chai

Richard Chai.jpgTarget has decided which designer will follow Jovovich-Hawk and Rogan for their GO International line -

New York designer Richard Chai.

Chai made a name for himself after working for Marc Jacobs (and helping launch Marc by Marc) and reviving Tse.

We have a feeling Richard Chai is going to become a lot more well known outside the fashion community in the coming year - In the past month alone, he’s announced plans to design resort, pre-fall and a men’s line in addition to this capsule collection for Target.

The line will debut in August, so expect little jackets with rounded seams, a bright dress or two and at least one sheer, flowing top.
