Elle is hosting a panel discussion at Barneys next week called “The Mystery of Perfume” —apparently it’s fragrance week here at Fashionista.
The theme of the event instantly made me think of the book Perfume, though I doubt a scent-driven murderer will be discussed at all. Though I highly recommend the novel. But fragrance and what inspires it, how it’s made, etc really is one of the most interesting topics in the beauty world.
Robbie will be there, along with beauty director Emily Dougherty and a few perfumers including perhaps the most interesting one we’ve ever met, Frederic Malle. The man has mad skills when it comes to creating scents, and if you can get him talking about Paris in the 70s, you’ll definitely hear a crazy Karl story or two.
All the details and how to reserve your spot after the jump.
Brian Reyes has had a loyal following of influentials since he first launched his collection in 2006. The Elle crew was the first magazine to get behind him in a major way and they were out in full force this morning, from Robbie, Joe, and Anne to the rest of the fashion news team, and celebrity guest blogger, Becki Newton. Longtime fan Rachel Bilson and her stylist Nicole Chavez were also in the front row yet again.
But this season brought a new major face…Carine! I get pretty excited when I’m at the same show as CR, so I can only imagine what it feels like for a designer knowing she’s watching their show for the first time.
What I always love about Brian’s clothes, and what I saw again in this collection, is that he brings in the uptown training he got at Oscar but makes it young and cool and something I really, really want to wear. Now there were some teeny tiny shorts that will definitely work on the adorable Rachel B. Me, not so much.
But the prints were gorge and the dresses were incredibly “it” girl appropriate. Usually, black isn’t what comes to mind when I think of Brian’s clothes, but the dresses in that color were some of my favorites.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some awesome Vogue Paris credits.
The Met Ball might have been Monday but the fashion pack just keeps going and going, so we made the three obligatory stops last night and this is what we saw:
— At Derek Lam’s store opening, curved glass walls separate different sections of the store - think shoes from bags from dresses from coats - and totally distort your vision, but look amazingly cool.
— Every editor was there - Anne S., Robbie M., even Anna - though we didn’t read NYMag’s Rihanna tweet until after our cab made it above Houston. Too bad, we would have greatly appreciated seeing RiRi’s new blonde highlights in person.
Let me just say that I love Elle, lots. It is one of the few American fashion mags that I actually read cover to cover every month.
I’m a huge fan of EIC Robbie Myers and Creative Director Joe Zee.
That said, I’m somewhat perplexed by their June cover girl, Megan Fox. One of these things is not like the other one. Granted, the girl is beautiful and the Alexei Hay shots I’ve seen look equally so.
GQ, sure I get it. But does starring in two Transformers movies plus being smoking hot really warrant an Elle cover? Not so much in this girl’s opinion.
We made our way to the 13th for the Galliano show last night.
Our cab driver dropped us off in the middle of the anti-fur gauntlet, “Ass-ass-in / Gall-ian-o.” One of us was wearing fur and bolted. The other lingered to Twitter a picture. We walked through security gates into a heaving crowd waiting for entrance to the venue - we were already ten minutes late.
We squeezed our way in between Lady Bunny, Carine Roitfeld and a sequined Balmain jacket - we had to stick our hands in our pockets not to reach out and touch the shoulders. But “in” was only a holding cell, and so we lingered by Milla Jovovich and talked about the fancy portable toilets.
They let us in and we thought, this must be what all those abandoned factories in Greenpoint look like on the inside. So we sat and watched the Times editors and Vogue writers hug their scarves around themselves. Rachel Zoe’s Brad gave Robbie Myers a kiss hello while Rachel posed for the cameras and her husband tucked into the back. Everyone was freezing and it started to snow.
Roxanne blared and a parade of hoop-skirted Russians came walking through the tunnel of blue and green light. They wore lace-up boots with tassels, coin-covered scarves, and corseted jackets. The last few virgin brides wore sheer white gowns with silver jewels and intricate head pieces. Editors choked and cried and coughed, but gleefully enjoyed the spectacle.
The girl next to us grabbed our arm and exhaled, “Now that is what fashion is all about.”
Nina Garcia’s set to guest star on Ugly Betty in just two days, but if that isn’t enough editor-on-TV for you, don’t worry - both Robbie Myers and Joe Zee, (who must love appearing in front of a camera), will appear in the season finale with previously announced guest star Naomi Campbell.
The three make up part of Elle’s softball team which plays against Mode’s softball team for a charity tournament. We hope they don’t actually let Naomi use a bat.
We love Elle, but once their hard working editors get tired of being on TV, reality or otherwise, can someone in production please get in touch with Vogue?
We can’t think of anything better than Meredith Melling-Burke and Anna plotting in a dugout.
That rumor we spread about Mark Fast doing a line for Topshop? It's true. And it's in last week's Sunday Telegraph magazine which means it was true before we even said anything and we've had it in our lap since... Read More
Meet Blue Logan, if you haven't already. A couple of years ago a friend dragged the soft-spoken Brit to a show at London Fashion Week, Aquascutum he thinks, and he started to draw the models as they walked down the... Read More
