‘Stache It

stachetee.jpgWe’ve had a few themes that seem to have organically emerged on the site today: Rock ‘n Roll (grunge included), photography, and now the moustache, thanks to a couple of Hamish references, Ruben Toledo’s work, and this t-shirt we just happened upon over atTopshop.

Random? A little. But also fairly culturally on trend. Kitschy? Definitely. Wearable? Totally. We’re planning to work it under our now ubiquitous blazers.

Also we just really, really like a moustache. When we see one, we smile. And sometimes write poetry. So there’s that too.

Ruben Toledo Talks It Out

nordstromsas1-thumb.jpgWe’re not big on envy, but we can’t help but feel a touch toward Ruben Toledo.

He’s not just married to his high-school sweetheart who happens to be fashion icon Isabel Toledo, he also has talent by the bucketfuls.

Ever since his eerie, disproportionate ads for Nordstrom, we’ve been jealous of his creepy, kitschy illustration style. Not to mention, he’s the proud owner of one of the most memorable moustaches since Salvador Dali - or Hamish - and for that we’re twice as envious.

So lucky for us, he’s speaking on October 29 at FIT. He’ll talk about art and fashion and also about his wife Isabel and how her influence affects his work and why he thinks “collaboration is the name of the game.”

The Toledos Heart Crystal Renn

toledosandcrystal.JPGAnd so do I. After taking off from the quite fabulous screening of The Day Before (more on that to come!), I headed over to the party for Ford model Crystal Renn’s new book, Hungry, at the Soho Grand.

I first met Crystal years ago on a shoot when I was the Beauty Director at YM. From minute one I was a huge fan. I couldn’t be more excited or proud of the success she’s having getting her message out about her battles with weight, eating disorders, and her desire to be successful as a model.

And as a curvy girl in this industry myself, well, I just connect with her. I also hear she might be doing some backstage TV commentary which I am totally on board with since she’ll actually know about fashion…which is more than I can say for so much of the “talent” that gets in our way every season.

Ruben Toledo Tackles Mr. Darcy

rubens pull.jpgRuben Toledo’s best known for his brilliant fashion illustrations, and being married to Isabel.

The two of them have reached a new level of fame post-inauguration and are being honored with both a book and a museum exhibition, Toledo/Toledo: A Marriage of Art and Fashion.

But we’re even more excited for Ruben’s most recent project mixing fashion and literature on the covers of three beloved novels: Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and The Scarlet Letter.

The gorgeous books will hit shelves right in time for Fashion Week (as if you’ll have a minute to read anything in print other than The Daily) and are worth the $16 for the cover alone.

Plus, you know you’ve been meaning to re-read all three since high school.

Fashion Film Fest!

Ruben Toledo Illustration of Chanel The last week in March is going to be heaven for fashion bloggers:

Not only is Cathy Horyn giving a talk at the Met on style and the internet (aaah!) but Diane Pernet brings her Shaded View on Fashion to the Tribeca Grand for a screening.

The movie is called You Wear It Well and it’s already toured Paris and Los Angeles, showing a series of fashion-focused short films created by some of our favorite people.

There’s a collaboration between Nick Knight and Gareth Pugh, an animated short by Ruben Toledo (at left), and a film by menswear designer Kim Jones.

The project was helmed by Pernet and Dino Dinco, and airs on March 31st at a special screening.

We wonder how many girls will show up with their laptops in hand…

Nordstrom Goes Green

nordstrom shopping bag ornament.jpgNordstrom is following in the steps of Barneys by going a little greener.

The Seattle-based department store introduced a reusable shopping tote to West Coast shoppers this past Saturday, featuring a cityscape illustration by Ruben Toledo; the tote won’t be available in Nordstrom stores across the country until later this year.

And for those of us either unwilling to part with $22 (the cost of the bag,) or too forgetful to bring the tote along on shopping trips, they’re getting ready for another green initiative - 100% recyclable shopping bags and gift boxes.

As of right now, the bags are only partially earth-friendly due to propylene handles; but those will soon be replaced with cotton ones, which will be filtered into stores while the old ones phase out, a move that should be completed by September, just a couple months before the new and improved gift boxes should complete their own transition.

We’re are all for this and hope that other retailers, big and small, follow suit. The next logical step? Companies like Urban Outfitters and Victoria’s Secret laying off on the 70 or so catalogs we get in the mail every five seconds.
