Saatchi Gets Pringled

PRINGLE SS10 .jpgPringle threw their return to London party at the Saatchi gallery on Monday night.

They didn’t just present their Spring/Summer 2010 collection, but also debuted a short film by Ryan McGinley and starring Tilda Swinton. It featured the mythical looking actress running across the Scottish Highlands, climbing castle walls, sneaking through tunnels and eventually disappearing into the ocean - all while wearing a long, flowing gown.

We stood in a white room while it projected onto two opposite walls and since everyone was facing different directions it was perfectly acceptable to alternate watching the gorgeous film with catching Tilda and Ryan hug or staring at Cecilia Dean’s shoes or checking out the details on Mark Ronson’s suit.

When the show did start, in yet another super long white room, the clothes were easy - in a good way. Clare Waight Keller showed chunky knits over slinky t-shirt dresses, crocheted dresses layered over slips, sheer tops with trenches, slouchy pants and crinkled metallic shorts.

They’ve come a long way from inventing the twinset.

Stella Loves Bambi

stellamccartneybambiad1.jpgOne of the things we love most about Stella McCartney is the sense of whimsy and fun that the designer has, and that so often comes through in her clothing.

And of course we all know what a passionate animal lover she is. Her latest ad campaigns (breaking in September issues) are pretty much the most perfect combination of the two that we can imagine.

A Partnership of Scots

tilda swinton lands pringle campaign.jpgPringle’s magical trio of hipness - Lydia Hearst, Daisy Lowe and Pixie Geldof - has been replaced with none other than Tilda Swinton.

The three heiresses landed at Pringle at the end of last year when the almost two hundred year old Scottish knitwear brand had a slight identity crisis and focused all their efforts on attracting a younger customer. The girls starred in a beautifully shot black and white ad campaign and walked the AW09 show in Milan, but sounds like it didn’t work so well.

We can’t really imagine anyone so different from the three as Fashion’s beloved Swinton and even Pringle’s CEO said of the fellow Scot, “We don’t want to go away from [our traditional customers] — we believe Tilda is more inclusive, as both young and more mature people identify with her acting.”

Ryan McGinley to Marc, Fashion in General

ryan mcginley on cover of 10 magazine.jpgRyan McGinely told The Advocate in 2003 that he wasn’t interested in fashion photography. Since then, he’s:

1. Shot Kate for W

2. Created a video for Puma

3. Shot Jen Kao’s debut collection

4. Shot Agyness falling from a building for POP

5. Shot Daisy Lowe and Liam Wade for Converse

6. Shot the Stella campaign for Spring (involving Kate again)

7. And now? He’s working on the other side of the lens, as model, for Marc’s Spring 09 ads (Raquel’s doing women’s, and Daisy Lowe will do Marc by Marc)

Don’t get us wrong - we think Ryan’s great, so who cares if he spoke too soon, but wouldn’t it be amazing if this was some kind of deal where he gets to replace Juergen’s usual spot for Fall 09?

Julia Falls Into the Gap

julia for gap.jpgThose much anticipated Gap ads have finally debuted. Well, sort of.

Division Street just posted four: Chanel Iman, Georgina Chapman, Lily Donaldson and, unexpectedly, Julia Restoin-Roitfled.

We love models, duh, but Carine’s daughter wins this one.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for the ads featuring Leigh, Liv Tyler, Hugh Dancy, Ryan McGinley and hopefully, despite what we’ve heard, Scott Schuman.

We love that Gap ads actually make us want to go to the Gap. Do you think Carine shops there?

Agyness To Fall Naked From a Building

Agyness DeynYes, the profile on Katie Grand in yesterday’s Guardian is very interesting, especially to those young stylists, image makers, and wannabe editors who should realize that curating one’s friends at an early age is just as important and insanely hard as picking one’s outfits.

But of course, we were totally distracted by Katie’s rise to fashion fame - founding POP Magazine, sharing creative credit with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, discretely not dropping Giorgio Armani’s name despite the fact that she’s also their stylist - and way more consumed by this paragraph:

“When I met Grand she’d just been to New York for a POP shoot with the art photographer Ryan McGinley and model Agyness Deyn. She’d never worked with McGinley but he said he’d like to photograph Agyness, whom of course Grand knew, and Grand suggested they should do some nudes, because Agyness had never done a nude shoot, and McGinley agreed. ‘And then a week later he sent me this reference photograph of kids falling off a fire escape - it was from the 1950s I think - and said he’d really like to have her falling. And naked. So we ended up with two stunt men and Agyness jumping naked from five stories onto a huge huge crash mat. It was incredible.

Say it with us now: O. M. G.

How they managed to pull off a naked girl falling - over and over again - from a fire escape on a public street in New York, with no indecent exposure charges, is a totally different matter.

Models

Ryan McGinley Likes Models, and Other Things on the Women Management Blog…

shannan_pola07_w.jpgWe love the trend of modeling agencies starting their own blogs (thanks, Elite, for starting it!) because it gives us gossip and access to our favorite girls at like half the speed of stalking.

This week, Women Management launched their own blog, and here’s what we learned:

*That Ryan McGinley shot Shannan Click (left) for his own personal work.

*That Mariacarla Boscono is friends with Sean Lennon (did they meet through Irina?).

*That Meredith Melling Burke totally digs Toni Garnn.

*That Julia Stegner shot a Maybelline campaign in the rain last Friday and we totally missed it!

Check it out for yourselves.

People Are Talking

Ryan McGinley Caves to Carine

ryan mcginley.jpgIn 2003, hipster artist extraordinare Ryan McGinley once told The Advocate that he wasn’t interested in fashion editorial work:

“It may be fine for someone else, but I’m just not interested in taking photographs of other people’s clothes. My photos are about something that’s really personal to me and the people that are involved in my life.”

He’s since gone on to shoot one of our favorite Kate Moss spreads ever, and create a video project for Puma.

Now we hear he’s recruiting models around town for two major photo shoots - POP and French Vogue - both of which should be amazing. And though yes, the models in his shoot are often mostly naked, there’s at least some fashion on display. And frankly, we love that he changed his mind since his photography tends to make the prettiest clothes even prettier.

So until those European shoots debut, you can still catch his very naked, very sunny “I Know Where the Summer Goes” exhibit at the Team Gallery in NYC.

Ryan McGinley + The Oscars

mcginley_kate_moss_6.jpg We hear that rising photo babe Ryan McGinley’s been given a plum assignment:

He’ll be shooting the famous Oscar portfolio in The New York Times Magazine, which will debut just before the actual Oscars.

The fun part is, Ryan’s been booked (and so has a studio in London) but the talent hasn’t, at least not officially.

After all, the Oscar nominations won’t be unveiled until later this year, though we have a few fashion suspicions - Marion Cotillard is just too good not to get recognized for La Vie En Rose, and writer Tamara Jenkins should get a big spotlight for The Savages.

Hopefully they’ll both get their photos taken, and look cool like Kate Moss, left, whom Mr. McGinley shot earlier this year for W
