Claudia to YSL and Dolce

claudia schiffer hails a staircase for chanel.jpgIt’s official: This season’s trend for established supermodels will trickle into Spring 09, with WWD confirming Claudia Schiffer as the new face of YSL (replacing Naomi) and Dolce (replacing a trio of young things playing GG).

Also, she gets to keep her post as the face of Salvatore Ferragamo, but we’re pretty sure she’s definitely out at Chanel, with either Heidi Mount or Sasha rumored to be taking her spot.

We guess YSL, Dolce and Salvatore have the money to pay a supe whatever she asks, a much different situation from Donna Karan, who’s recycling runway shots for her Spring campaign - undoubtedly saving a lot of money in the process by not paying for a photographer, a venue, all the people involved, and probably not Constance Jablonski who’s technically the campaign girl - instead of renewing Kate’s contract for however many zillions she made for Fall 08.

A Meditation on Ads

WHICH ONE MAKES YOU WANT SOME FERRAGAMO.jpgI actually sat down and read GQ cover to cover this weekend.

1) Because James Franco is on the cover and you know how I feel about who’s on the cover and

2) Because I actually love their editorial content.

But on my way there I started noticing the ads.

Something was off. For example, in the four page Gap campaign, only men are featured. I flipped from Hugh Dancy to Joseph Feinnes without an appearance from Clemence, Julia, or even Liv. It’d be one thing if Gap only put their girls in women’s magazines, but we get boys and girls - so why do the boys only get boys? Oh, and the Sartorialist is definitively missing, (but so is Sean Avery).

Then we have the Tod’s ads. Gwyneth Paltrow is their super hyped, no doubt super expensive face of Fall 08. But while one of the men in the GQ ad version bears a slight resemblance to Chris Martin if you squint and can imagine Chris Martin draping a sweater over his shoulders, Gwyneth is most certainly not present. Though we know from the background that both she and the men are sitting on the same yacht.

Thirdly, and perhaps best, is the Salvatore Ferragamo ad spread. In it, they’ve used the same Claudia Schiffer and the same background from the ads in women’s magazines, but remember that guy who wore tights? Well, in GQ, he gets to wear a proper suit. And Claudia doesn’t look pleased. But there are ballerinas in tutus running around him which adds the ballet element in a different way.

So the the only woman who can sell a product to men is Claudia Schiffer? And definitely not Gwyneth Paltrow? But you can use any hot guy to sell something to women?

Or maybe I should just stop memorizing magazines.

Yes to Clutches

Ferragamo runway clutches spring 09.jpgI’ve been carrying around a zippered Y-3 wallet under my arm for a week, and suddenly, life is easier. I grab everything I need, all at once on my way out the door, which is too much to fit into a pocket-sized wallet.

So I’m particularly delighted with the newest unexpected twist from this season’s menswear runways - the introduction of clutches to men’s wardrobes.

If you think about it, it’s really not far-fetched. Men carry briefcases and portfolios, which are just as hard to carry as a clutch. So why not switch out an attaché case for a sleek Marni envelope? Plus, these days, we’re carrying cell phones, wallets, Blackberries, keys and a bajillion other things. A giant messenger bag isn’t always a convenient, or appropriate, accessory for a night out.

Dries Van Noten’s zippered patent leather option is pretty basic without adding too many buckles or other distractions we’re sure most guys wouldn’t approve of. We love the blood red Ferragamo, left - it’s big but not annoying.

We bet Marc will be next in line with some playful clutches, since he’s obviously a fan of them himself.

The only problem? Keeping your girlfriend’s hands off them.

London Burglars In High Gear

ferragamo shot.jpgGuess the London police didn’t arrest everybody involved in the string of London smash-and-grabs -

The Salvatore Ferragamo boutique on Old Bond Street was raided late Monday night by a duo on mopeds, just like with a lot of the other robberies.

Except these particular burglars changed the usual strategy - instead of smashing the windows and grabbing whatever was on display and then riding away, the thieves rode straight through the front glass door (this is starting to sound like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie) and left carrying armfuls of designer bags.

Stay tuned for follow-ups - we’ve been in touch with the London police since the Marc raid right before New Year’s and will let you know when the kids are finally revealed.

But just one thought for the cops - you might want to start cracking down on fashionable moped riders. Clearly this is the untapped source.

Adventures in Copyright

Adventures in Copyrights: Flat Attack

ferragamo nine west flats.jpgYou might think Salavatore Ferragamo’s classic flats are a little old ladyish - but we’ve been seeing them on the feet of some of New York’s most fashionable girls.

They come in a rainbow of colors, have proper soles unlike most ballet flats, and give the most casual outfit a polished finish - basically they’re perfect for city living.

Nine West agrees. They’ve abandoned their tendency to copy uber-trendy, straight from the runway shoes and opted for a more classic and practical counterfeit.

If you have extra time on your hands, you could even take the time to get the metal plate in the middle of the bow engraved.

Either shoe would be adorable with cut-off denim shorts and an oversized tee, or even a floral mini-dress this spring.

And honestly, we’d never know which one you’re wearing.

(Bonus points if you actually know which shoe is which…)
