Most Best Birthday Present Ever

anna wintour desiree rogers.jpgForget the latest phone technology or Prada pumps, Anna Wintour got politics for her birthday yesterday.

American Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief was named to President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. She’s joined by a handful of ‘private’ citizens including Sarah Jessica Parker, Edward Norton, architect Thom Mayne and former New York City Ballet dancer Damian Woetzel.

The committee, which works with both the National Endowment for the Arts and for the Humanities, works to achieve “economic revitalization through the arts” and guarantee the arts don’t become an afterthought in America.

We love Anna and we love the arts and we hope time in Washington (if this involves time in Washington) inspires her to get a bit more creative in New York.

Sarah Jessica’s Strawberry Scent

sjp nyc.jpgSarah Jessica Parker may as well change her name to Carrie Bradshaw.

Sex and the City might’ve ended in 2005, and she might’ve tried for a movie career, but that failed to launch and since then her only successful movie role is playing Carrie Bradshaw.

Now she’s using Carrie to launch her perfume and WWD even titled their story, “Carrie On.” AND, she’s wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress in the ads. Meanwhile, the packaging and bottle for SJP NYC explodes with so many prints and colors that if you combined Samantha Jones and Carrie Bradshaw into one character and placed her in 1987, she’d be overwhelmed.

Coty’s thrilled to release the floral fragrance around the movie and from the way they talk about “leveraging” the movie release we’re pretty sure they’re going to make her dress up and answer to Carrie for promotional events.

And if that’s not enough Sex and the City for you, HBO’s launching these Sex and the City flats mid-November. Though there’s really nothing to say about that.

Say It Ain’t So

sjp probably not the face of marios halston.jpgSomeone’s started a rumor that Sarah Jessica Parker’ll be the new face of Halston. Let’s count all the reasons we bet on never.

1. Halston is a disaster. Though we’re sure Marios Schwab will end its curse and do something brilliant, a brand can’t have a face for a collection that doesn’t exist (yet).

2. Last time Harvey chose a face, Rachel Zoe, to be associated with a brand, it failed. It really, really failed.

3. As if fashion wasn’t sick enough of celebrity, whatever comes down Lindsay Lohan’s runway for Ungaro this week will probably put off even the most celeb-friendly of the fashion world for a moment.

4. It’d be silly to pay Sarah Jessica Parker to be the face of a brand when Carrie Bradshaw’s been photographed wearing it all over Manhattan, for free, and will be seen on every screen in the same dresses come May.

What’d we miss?

Shopping

This Might Work

Everyone’s psyched for Fashion’s Night Out, but everyone’s worried that no one’ll actually shop - or we were worried until we saw the official PSA.

You’d be hard pressed not to break out your wallet after listening to Sarah Jessica Parker beg and watching Diddy dance his way across the screen. Anna Wintour laughs, which is becoming less unusual, and Raquel Zimmermann hangs onto Alex Wang like a monkey to a tree and they’re all SO excited.

Suddenly, it makes sense to shell out for a PS 1 if Jack & Lazaro help pick the color or splurge on Elizabeth & James when Ashley tells you what fits best - especially since the night before Fashion Week all anyone wants are new clothes. Anyway, now we think this’ll be successful, and by successful we mean lucrative.

The official PSA, above. Outtakes, after the jump!

Fashionista v. Recessionista

ep93_carrie_ruffledlayerdre[1].jpgRumor has it that Patricia Field might part ways with the Sex and the City sequel, over creative differences with Sarah Jessica Parker.

SJP wants Carrie’s wardrobe to be reflective of the recession, which Field is apparently not so into. The flame-haired style maven told Grazia, “I don’t use the recession as a reference for my creativity.”

Whose side are you on?

In these times, we have all had to struggle with balancing our lust for fashion and cautious saving, or just outright lack of funds. And it’s nice that SJP is considering realism. But do we, as viewers, actually want Carrie Bradshaw to cut down on her fabulous and outrageous outfits? Is this one of those times when art doesn’t have to imitate life?

Personally, this strikes us as exactly the right time and place for fashion escapism.

Here are just a few of our favorite mock moments from “The Body Issue”

—Gisele’s transformation into supermodel. It involves Sarah Jessica Parker and a sheep.

—Forks are SO over, they need a new word for over

—A Gwyneth vs. Courtney Love legal smackdown

—Gareth Pugh’s very unique way of making Kombucha

London: The Famed Jewels

babe paley wearing verdura pearls pull.jpgWith a fan base that includes fashion arbiters (Diana Vreeland, Babe Paley and Coco Chanel), royalty (Aga Khan and Princess Diana) and stars (Sarah Jessica Parker, Greta Garbo, Halle Berry), Verdura, the Italian jeweller, has a very “niche” appeal - those with strictly superb taste and the bank account to match.

Yesterday in London, Nico Landrigan, Verdura’s VP, brought over from New York seventy of the jeweller’s most treasured archived pieces to the Obsidian Gallery in a “part exhibit, part sale”, to celebrate the company’s 70th anniversary (the exhibit opens to the public this October). Given what was on display, the security should have been as tight as it was down the street as the Obama’s and Sarkozy’s of the world assembled for the the G20. For the rare buyers (anyone got £50,000 handy?), jaw dropping pieces are available.

For fashion historians and junkies, not only were the jewels exhibited, but also the original, handwritten ledger books from the 40’s, including four items purchased at around $2500 (a grandly sum then) by Mrs. Henry Fonda. Vanity Fair’s Amy Fine Collins once said of the Italian Duke, whose muse was Babe Paley and lover Vogue editor Nicky De Gunzberg: “He is the century’s best jeweller… his designs are not for insecure people and does not appeal to the herd instinct. Women who wear Verdura don’t want to look like every other person wearing their Van Cleef diamond flower pin, their Chanel suit and their Prada bag.” Nuff said.

Would You Wear

Would You Wear Split-Toe Shoes?

sarah jessica parker likes to boot up like a horse.jpgHorses have hooves for a reason. We do not. But if Martin Margiela has anything to do with it, that may change. Ok, not literally - he’s not planning on changing our anatomy, but his Tabi shoes and boots, at left, have a split between the big toe and the rest of the foot, making the wearer look a bit too equine to be seen outside of the Kentucky Derby.

The shoe, which has been spotted in multiple styles on SJP lately, is supposed to be modeled after the traditional Japanese tabi shoes, but we can’t help but think of the toe-socks that were all the rage in middle school.

If you’re interested in trying the ancient look, you’ll have a lot to choose from: Margiela made the style in flats, pumps, and boots, starting at $775.

But honestly, we don’t quite get it. Is it purely for looks? For fun? Is there an orthopedic function at work? Or is Margiela just horsing around (hah!) and getting the best of Hollywood’s wallet?

First Look: Alexander Wang

aw aw09 10.JPGWhat follows is a list of why Alexander Wang is the most perfect Valentine.

1. This isn’t a fashion show, it’s a rock concert at Roseland Ballroom.

2. He’s incorporated both chocolate and tequila into his pre-show cocktails. They might taste foul but it’s a valiant and appreciated effort.

3. Ok, so he has nothing to do with this one but walking into a venue shoulder to shoulder with a Margiela clad Sarah Jessica Parker is kind of cool.

4. The black bandage leggings - like an Herve dress for your legs - make me wish I was sitting next to Rachel Zoe so we could die together.

5. My box of Sweethearts are 90% white and that never happens.

6. He opens the show with “Welcome to the Jungle” which means the front row - Fabiola, Lauren Santo Domingo, Erin Wasson, Pamela Love, Keegan Singh, Jen Brill, the Richards sisters, Derek Blasberg - is seriously rocking out. I like to think Anna, Bee, DVF and SJP are rocking out, too.

7. He takes his bow wearing a backstage pass around his neck, as if they aren’t going to let him in.

8. This is unrelated to his Valentine qualifications, but there was fur. Discuss.

Vivienne Brings the Magic to LA, Tomorrow

SJP wedding dress by vivienne westwood.jpgWill you be in / around LA tomorrow? How about nearby EM & Co, the boutique on 3rd St?

Are you a fan of Vivienne Westwood’s Spring 09 Anglomania collection? Or that wedding dress? (Translation: Are you super rich?)

If you can answer yes to all of the above, you’re in luck. EM & Co’s hosting a one-day only trunk show of Dame Viv’s most recent creations, and taking guest measurements if they’re so inclined as to purchase replicas of the wedding gown made famous by Carrie’s flower bashing scene.

The bad news? Only a limited number of the gowns will be produced, so we’re guessing that means you’ll have to bid to get your way. The other bad news? The event if invite only, so unless you can get down there and charm the sales people, you’re out of luck. But, if all you want to do is appreciate the dress in person just once anyway, the gown’s hanging in the store, right now, and will be there through Friday. And hopefully that’ll be enough for you.

C’est la vie.

SJP to MET

sjp costume institute.jpgThe Costume Institute at the Met is finally getting its own audio guide.

We never understood why one of the most popular, (at least in recent years), galleries lacked an informational tour to go with it. The clothes are fun to see, but left without any context other than the obligatory opening paragraph, one’s forced to imagine the stories behind them and the historical context in which they fit.

So, thanks to Harold Koda, the curator responsible for most of the institute’s recent success, visitors will get ten times more out of their Costume Institute experience.

And of course, when we’re talking about clothes that range from pre-Poiret to Paquin to Prada one can’t have just any narrator. Sarah Jessica Parker’s already recorded Costume: The Art of Dress which will cover most of the museum’s clothing and other pertinent works of art.

It’ll be fun to hear Carrie’s voice, we just hope an historian wrote the script.

SJP Smells Like Teen Spirit

twilights.jpg Bravo to Sarah Jessica Parker for being brilliant at leverage:

Mere months after the Twilight series gets pegged as the next Harry Potter, and mere heartbeats away from its first movie release, the movie star releases a perfume called… Twilight.

Coty Inc. said in WWD today that the fragrances are based on “moments in time,” but we know the reality:

They’re based on a catchphrase that’s already made millions, and can stand to make even millions more.

Sadly, SJP probably won’t make a cameo in the actual Twilight, which is really a bummer - put her in some midnight blue McQueen and she’d be a perfect goth princess.

Carrie: Not Dead?

young sjp.jpgYou didn’t think Carried died with the movie, did you?

Because if you did, you might be so glad to know she’s back - but younger.

Candace Bushnell and Harper Collins have teamed up to bring you, The Carrie Diaries, a two-book deal that explores Carrie’s life as a teenager, and the series of horrible, awkward dates she went on and the cute, but slightly stupid boy from her geometry class that she pined endlessly for in between scenes in Theater.

The books come out in 2010, sure to be followed by that replacement to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Darren Star’s been praying for.

Hold on to your Maddens, girls!

An Open Letter to Blake Lively

blake lively at gossip girl premier.jpgHi Blake,

We love your show. And while some in our office might be on Team Blair, we love you, too.

And so we’re kind of worried about you. Have you lost track of where Serena Van Der Woodsen ends and Blake Lively begins?

It’s ok that you’re dating your on-screen boyfriend off-screen, apparently everyone does that, but we’re concerned with your wardrobe. See, Serena’s outfits are ok for TV, (truthfully, sometimes they’re a little much), but they’re not ok for real life. And yet you pile on the accessories and carry the outrageous bags through New York as if you can’t leave GG world.

We love Vena Cava too, but they’re Serena’s favorite brand and there’s really no need for you to wear every single romper they’ve ever made.

And the outfit you wore to the premiere party this weekend, at left, had us super worried until we realized that it was the premier party and you’re probably just getting into character.

You should talk to Sarah Jessica Parker about this, she managed to learn a lot from Pat Field without ever actually dressing like Carrie.

Can’t wait til the 1st!

SJP’s Back on TV

sarah jessica parker head tilt.jpgThere’s been some speculation that Sarah Jessica Parker’s getting her own reality show on Bravo, and now, the rumors can take a nap.

The show will be called American Artist, which basically sounds like it’ll be just like Project Runway except with sculptures and murals instead of jackets and prom dresses.

SJP’s producing the whole thing, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s on just before The Rachel Zoe Project, which premieres on Bravo on September 8th.

Do you think SJP will make a surprise appearance as a guest judge, like on PR? Will anyone actually watch it? Something tells us…

SJP Carries On

We honestly thought SJP meant what she’s been saying about leaving the Carrie character behind after SATC: The Movie, but it looks like the gig just pays too well.

She recently shot a tourism ad for São Paulo, Brazil, in which she skips around, tosses her hair and types away on her Carrie-like laptop, all while talking about the best shopping in the city’s largest department store.

The best line? “Thank God there’s a gym, so you can fit into all those clothes.”

She was reportedly paid $600,000 for the short.

Why We Love The LA Times

Lohan in Nina Ricci This weekend, The Los Angeles Times discusses a budding brew between Sarah Jessica Parker and Nina Ricci.

As you all know, SJP wore a Theyskens gown to the NYC premiere of Sex and the City - the same gown that Lauren Santo Domingo wore to the Met Ball about a month ago; the same gown that Lindsay Lohan trashed up in Harper’s Bazaar before that.

SJP is peeved because Nina Ricci told her the dress was exclusively hers, and she tells Cathy Horyn at The Times that “there is a relationship between the entertainment industry and fashion. We’ve watched sales dwindle and we’ve watched people be less inclined to spend money on clothes.”

LA blogger Monica Corcoran’s reaction?

“[My blog] loves the passive-aggressive threat appliqued to Parker’s statement…. Parker’s comment about dwindling sales seems to suggest that only red carpet exposure will save a label. Um, do you really think SATC fans ran out to buy this silver gown after seeing it at the premiere?”

It’s pretty funny, albeit a little harsh - obviously, SJP would want some crazy new dress for the biggest movie event of her life, and she’s incredulous that a fashion house lied to her about it - but it’s not the best part of the story.

That goes to what the LA Times labeled their photo of Lohan in the Nina Ricci dress. Download the photo from the site, and notice it’s name:

Givenchy Shoes: The High/Low

sjp vs heidi shoes.jpgTo: Tips@Fashionista.com

From: Laura @INoticeEverything.com

Oh no, Oh no! I just watched the E! red carpet special of the SATC premiere, and I saw SJP show off her (ugly) gold Givenchy shoes. Clicking through the Fashion Police on E!’s website, I noticed that Heidi Montag wore the same shoes when she made a fool of herself on Dave Letterman.

What’s worse: SJP and Heidi wearing the same shoes period or SJP wearing the shoes AFTER Heidi has already ruined them? At least SJP had the decency to hide hers under that stunning Nina Ricci gown…

Mooka Kinney Gets a SATC Wardrobe Credit, Splits Up

Mooka Kinney This may only matter to Refinery 29 staffers, but here goes:

Last night at the Men.Style.com party (or should we call it Lohan-gate?), designer Alison Lewis said she’d split with her design partner, Rachel Antonoff.

The two 26-year-olds were the chicks behind Mooka Kinney, the indie jumper label best known for getting a romper on Lily Donaldson during a summer paparazzi shoot.

They also have a dress on Carrie Bradshaw in the upcoming Sex and the City movie, which we’re seeing tonight at a screening (we’ll let you know…).

Alison will be merging with jewelry designer Samantha House on her new label, called Lewis + House.
