Ports and the Art of Zen

portsSS10-10.JPGFrom the minute you entered the big tent at Bryant Park, you could tell that Tia Cibani was going to be working out some Asian influences in her Spring 2010 Ports 1961 collection, as evidenced by the giant photo of a Zen rock garden at the back of the runway.

(Nevermind that I got easily distracted when I spotted none other than Kelly Kapowski seated across the room next to Mr. Mickey. Random, yet awesome, sighting. If only Jessie Spano and Lisa Turtle had been around to take it all in, too.)

You could see the inspiration in the form of variations on the obi, you know the big tie at the back of traditional kimonos, shoes that had heels that looked as difficult to walk in as those of a traditional geisha (some stumbling models would likely agree), and traces of bamboo in clutches. For me, the Asian touches worked really well when paired with more modern silhouettes, like some of the lovely suiting. But less so when things got too literal—there were what looked like chopsticks tucked into one of the obi-like knots on a draped dress.

That said, there were lots of pretty separates in a fresh, clean pallette, some cool use of tie dye, and fabrics that I can’t wait to get a closer look at.

Plus, you know, a Saved by the Bell sighting!

Mid-Day Snack

katemossandnaomicampbell1993.jpgBaby Kate: We love taking a walk down Moss memory lane. Sweet lord is that first Corinne Day cover stunning. We almost forgot how much we loved it. And we can only imagine the trouble these two got into after this picture was taken. {Vogue UK}

Secret Society: Apparently the A-Gays over at Condé have banded together. They have a name: The Majority. And are even considering a philanthropy. I’m officially obsessed with this frat-tastic endeavor even if it’s starting to give me Pi Phi flashbacks. {Daily Intel}

Twi-Hard: Embarrassing or not, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to reference Twilight. Especially when it crosses over with the modeling world in the form of Noot Seear. She’s in New Moon and also shares our Saved By the Bell obsession. Enough said. {Style File}

Yikes: I’m slightly scared even linking to this story, but what the hell! Richard Tyler made Scientology uniforms. They’re pretty damn creepy and I’m sure typing these words makes me thetin-heavy. Please don’t come try to clear me, Tom Cruise. {Gawker}

Feeling Nostalgic

urbanoutfittersshreddedleatherbracelet.jpegWatching Mark-Paul Gosselaar do his entire segment on Jimmy Fallon the other night in character as Zack Morris (complete with giant cell phone and pegged jeans) got us thinking about all our old favorite Saved by the Bell episodes.

And then this afternoon we happened upon this shredded leather bracelet at Urban Outfitters took us back to another classic, Silver Spoons.

We feel like it’s a sort of updated version of the rubber bracelets made insanely popular in the ’80s by Ricky Schroeder. Man, did we love those things. And for only $28, we can kind of recapture the moment without being too literal.

Now if we just get one of those trains like Ricky had to ride around our apartment.
