NYFW Rewind: Commonwealth Utilities

I skipped the Commonwealth Utilities show.

I’m sure it was for something important, but now I can’t remember why and this video makes me wish I was there in what was clearly the manliest room (barber shop?) of all of New York Fashion Week.

Even the clothes are nice, though we aren’t digging suit shorts on men who don’t share Thom Browne’s proportions. Anyway, Chad White opens, New York Magazine’s Amy Odell has a cameo and everyone has great hair.

Nightcap: Burberry Bliss

DJ Jazzy Alexa.jpgIt was raining yesterday, just in case you haven’t heard, which was super appropriate for Burberry day, just in case you haven’t read.

The party in honor of the lighting of the new Burberry sign was held atop the Palace hotel, otherwise known as home to Chuck Bass. Even we had to walk the white carpet, strolling along behind Julia Roitfeld wearing that white Alexander Wang dress (someone should tell Vogue UK it’s not Burberry). Tallulah Harlech rocked red lipstick while waiting for the elevator with Glenn O’Brien and Bendel’s former fashion staff.

We’d been handed a Burberry card at the entrance and showed it at the foot of the stairs, in the elevator, outside the elevator, to walk up the stairs, and finally to enter the penthouse where Alexa Chung dj’d in the same grey shift Hilary Rhoda wore - but with a vintage belt and chunky boots, of course. The band on stage, One Night Only, looked like they stepped out of a Burberry ad (complete with red guitar) especially with Lily Donaldson and Hugh Dancy standing stageside.

That’s about when we got trampled by Orlando Bloom and a ridiculously handsome hockey player who was not Sean Avery, which was also when they ran out of champagne and we ran home to finish Say Anything.

Sean Avery Gets a Doppelganger

stewart bradley eagles at elle magazine.jpgSomehow, everyone in sports knew another one of their own was leading a double (fashion) life.

Following in the footsteps of hockey player Sean Avery, who interned at Men’s Vogue last year, Philadelphia Eagles football player Stewart Bradley started an internship with ELLE on Monday. Bradley, who’s only been in the NFL since 2007, is set to tackle the off-season stint under the watchful eye of creative director Joe Zee.

Rumor has it the linebacker worked on a photo shoot his first day and has already received an invitation to attend a DVF lunch with top ELLE editors and guests like Jessica Alba. He was also told to start his day at “9:30 or whenever.”

The 6’4” player might be seen blocking fashionistas during Fashion Week where we suspect he’ll tag along with ELLE editors next week.

But as our informant put it: “So random, so lame, so last summer”. But in fashion, we don’t penalize for too many men on the field.

Update: Expect to see more of Stewart on ELLE.com soon…

Kanye Wants to Be Your Intern

kanye west really loves marc jacobs.jpgIt’s no secret Kanye West really takes this fashion business very seriously.

Not only was he very sweet about getting rejected from Balenciaga’s Fall 08 show, but he’s also designing a line of shoes for Louis Vuitton.

So if you work in a design house and are looking for an intern, listen up: Kanye wants a starter position at “a house,” so he can put his millionaire hands to work fetching lattes and eavesdropping intern-style a la Sean Avery.

We know we normally provide contact information for this sort of thing, but it’s Kanye, so we can’t. We suggest interested parties try him via his fan club message board. We honestly think he would be a really good intern.

Sean Avery The Movie, Actually in the Works

sean avery and freja sure do love their headgear.jpgBecause we know you were wondering what’s happening with that Sean Avery movie that Sean said might be happening, here’s an update:

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News yesterday, Sean divulged that not only is the movie definitely happening and in pre-production, but that he himself is an executive producer on the film, and “talks to the writer weekly.”

Indeed, someone somewhere has opened an IMDB entry for the film, set to hit silver screens in 2010. So it all seems about as real as his internship, so far.

But so many questions, like: Who will play Sean? Will Andre make a cameo? Will it be called something like, Seamless Summer? Which inevitably leads to, who exactly is this film targeting? Hockey fans? Is somebody out there hoping for a Devil 2?

And most pressing, will the Anna character wear a bob and nude mules?

Another Devil - With Sean Avery

sean avery smiling.jpgRight on the heels of news that Marie Claire is starting its own reality show and some In Style editors have a cameo on GG, comes this:

Sean Avery may be making his own movie about interning at Vogue, Devil Wears Prada style.

The screenplay hasn’t been written yet - that’s right, they need to hire someone to write what he’s been doing - and it’s supposed to be a romantic comedy.

We don’t know what makes Avery think he’s the next Kate Hudson, but have to admit, we can’t wait to see what he does as an intern, even if it’s the fictional version.

Wonder if they’ll show him doing check-ins and mail call - or maybe he’ll just hang at Beatrice…

Quote of the Day

“Why go to work and be hot? You can look good and not have that boring-type look…Why are women allowed to do it and not men?” - Sean Avery, on men wearing shorts to the office, in the New York Times.
Quote of the Day

“And if you’d like to learn something, consider this: If you feel like teasing this hockey player about an obsession of his that you might think is a little unusual, go right ahead. Just know that you may get your ass kicked by a very expensive pair of shoes — and that they’ll probably match both my belt and my shirt.” - Sean Avery, on his haters, as this week’s guest editor for Men’s Vogue.com.

Conde Pays Sean Avery

sean avery dressed.jpgSean Avery, hockey star to the Rangers, started his internship at Vogue this past Monday.

But according to WWD, it seems the man is already getting some special treatment.

Not only is he sitting in on meetings, helping with every department, and going to the couture shows next month, but apparently he’s earning minimum wage for his time, too.

That might not sound like much to most people, but keep in mind that almost every single other intern there not only doesn’t get paid at all, but usually ends up actually paying to be there (as I, dear reader, did three times for Conde internships). Conde usually requires school credit for interning, and if you’re an NYC college student, you already know that a four-credit internship usually rings in around $4,000.

Did I mention Sean Avery earned $2 million last year?

I hope he gets sent to Starbucks every hour.

(On a side note: did anyone else catch Sean’s picture in the June Vogue? He’s flanked by Chanel and Behati on page 78. A Men’s Vogue cover is definitely in the works…)

Is The New: Sean Avery and Emily Weiss

seanavery.jpgSo, Sean Avery, player of both hockey and women, is going to spend his summer interning at 4 Times Square.

Apparently, the 28-year old Ranger loves all things fashion and hopes to hone his sartorial skills “making copies” under Anna Wintour’s watchful eye.

And he doesn’t just shop for his girlfriends, WWD says. “He prizes his black patent leather Yves Saint Laurent high-tops,” which obviously means Vogue’s the next best place for him after the Madison Square Garden ice rink.

For those of you always asking how to get a foot in the fashion industry, take note, signing a $2 million contract that leaves your summers free for interning is probably a good bet.

And for those of you already lucky enough to have landed a summer internship in Vogue’s closet, let us know which editor he throws against a wall first.
