Our Favorite Invites, Part II

favorite invites part II.jpgSo here we are, unofficial day one of Fashion Week.

We’re heading out to catch Jenni Kayne, Rachel Antonoff, shop Anna Sui for Target and celebrate Preen at the Soho Grand, but first, our second batch of creative invites.

Shipley & Halmos took the video route, too. Theirs featured a typewriter actually typing out each invitation and then someone stuffing and addressing the envelopes which makes us expect, um, something old fashioned?

DvF’s postcard invite features palm trees and the desert while Rag & Bone’s crinkly invite is leather we wish we could wear and we kind of want to put Jen Kao’s on our wall.

Not sure if anything beats the hot pink bracelet invitation you have to wear to get into the Marc/Gaga party though.

Shipley, Halmos, Gossip

S & H aw09 .JPGWhen you walked into the Shipley & Halmos show, there was a collective cry of, “Wait, we have to stand?” and “Where’s the presentation?”

It was, in fact a zig-zag runway show. The boys made the same collection about four times in different color ways. There were very Betty Draper high-waisted, cropped, skinny pants made of crisp silk in turquoise, black, pale pink. There were cut out shoulders, like at Charlotte Ronson, and lots of silk layering over turtlenecks.

Philip Crangi’s delicately strung chain and bar jewelry was the highlight. His silver necklaces, belts and earrings were perfect.

Not so perfect were the Conde girls bashing their very important boss loud enough for the models to hear backstage.

Fashion Week Face-Offs! Remix!

cushnie et ochs sent flight attendants from a spaceship down the runway for spring 09.jpgIt’s that time, kids. The Fashion Week schedule is making its way into our lives, and we can already spot some time slot duels:

On Friday, February 13th, Cushnie et Ochs is showing at the same time (4pm) as Shipley & Halmos (which is a presentation, but you only have until 5pm to get there, so if Cushnie starts late - hah! - you’re out of luck.) Then later that day at 8pm, Form and Lorick will have to compete for pretty young things’ attendance.

Then on Tuesday the 17th, advertiser-driven Badgley Mischka will have to contend with buzz-driven Sophie Theallet at 10am, and Phillip Lim may lose some seats to Carmen Marc Valvo the next day at 3pm.

Also of note: Even though plenty of small designers are nowhere to be seen for the Fall 09 shows, Hayden-Harnett is officially on the schedule with a 6pm presentation on Thursday the 19th, and ThreeAsfour, who usually hosts a pretty heart stopping show, has switched to presentation format (Valentine’s Day at 7pm, same as Elise Overland.)

Shipley & Halmos: Make-up, Madeline & More

SHIPLEY & HALMOS.JPGWe hung out backstage before the Shipley & Halmos show to a) steal glances at the clothes and Loeffler Randall shoes and b) talk to Beauty.com make-up artist extraordinare Tina Turnbow about the Blade-Runner-Goes-Pink look she was going for.

She showed us how to apply Stila lip-gloss to our eyelids for a fresh, shiny look. And then she told us she loved our eye-liner. And then we blushed. She also showed us how to put white eye-liner at the top of your lip to fluff it up a bit, and how to brush shimmer around the corner of your eye so that when the light hits you, you glow.

We could’ve stayed and played with her all day, but the show was about to start and we were determined to make it to our seat in time to how Madeline from Model.Live was holding up with her second show of the day (her first was Cushnie et Ochs - more on them very soon.)

Madeline held her own with the gamine girls and very cute boys in her little black dress. The collection, the second the boys have designed since breaking from Trovata, was easy-going; almost anyone could wear most of the looks. Our favorite was a sheer black top tucked into wide-leg white pants. It was an almost perfect retro/modern balance.

But for the most part, our eyes were on the Philip Crangi jewelry, and Philip himslef, which was fun for us, but not exactly the point.

Rag & Bone and Shipley & Halmos Switch

tanya d in rag and bone fall 08.jpgGood morning, and we really hope your Friday schedule isn’t back-to-back, because here’s a memo in case it is:

Rag & Bone and Shipley & Halmos have swapped time slots, with Rag & Bone now at 4pm, and Shipley now at 5pm.

If you were already going to both shows anyway, you might not care. But if you were planning on going straight to Shipley from Cushnie et Ochs or Mischen (both in Chelsea) you might not realize until you look at your invites Friday morning that Rag & Bone is all the way over on 54th at 12th Ave, with Shipley all the way back down in Chelsea.

And if you’re planning on going to Nicole Miller at 6, then you’ll find yourself making the northward trek back to the Tents if you’re trying to fit it all in.

Pack flats.
