Mid-Day Snack

tim at love with armani times rubbish.jpgLove Me: The LOVE staff, including Tim Clifton-Green and his perfect hat, spent the afternoon perusing The Armani Times. Rubbish Mag, one more reason we wish we lived in London (or Britt does). {LOVEblog}

Greener Pastures: This made us so giggly and excited, we’re a little embarrassed. There was not a cooler shade on the runway all season, and now it’s coming to real life. Hooray! {BeautyCounter}

Renzo to the Rescue: Sophia Kokosalaki apparently scored a big enough paycheck from Diesel to get her own company back too. Well played. {VogueUK}

Nine Daughters and a Stereo: There’s no headline better than the actual name of this model agency in Cologne of all places. Rick Owens and Raf Simons think they’re way cool. We agree. {DazedDigital}

Streetwalker: Opposites Attract

Streetwalker Julia.JPGJulia, Architect

Got Her: Dans les Tuileries yesterday afternoon.

Stalked Her: Because if we wore fur, we’d wear it like that - had to ask where it came from.

Shot Her: Because she’s an architect who fit in perfectly with the Parisian fashion crowd and that is quite a feat. Aside from Lagerfeld, she’s working on sets for Ungaro and Costume National. Plus, we’re obsessing over black and navy as of late.

She Says: “I have always loved fashion but it turns out I’m good at architecture so I found a way to do both! I think they are very similar, you’re just designing space but on very different scales”

We Say: You might’ve mastered both.

Sophia Kokosalaki Goes Clubbing

sophia aw09 .jpgOn Friday night, I stared at my suitcase trying to figure out what I could wear that would work for a hipster dinner in the 10th arrondissement followed by a black tie event in the 1st. I ended up with a weird mix of Marc Jacobs & Abercrombie - but one of Sophia Kokosalaki’s Fall 09 dresses might have been better.

Last season’s Grecian warrior princess knocked a couple of years off her age, shortened her skirt and threw on a sick jacket - cropped, plated in metals, sequins - that was like fashion armor.

A handful of dresses were constructed from sheer black fabric draped over nude jersey and silk - they reminded me of Alexander Wang. And the beribboned details brought to mind both Behnaz and Nina Ricci. Or it’s just that time of the season where everything starts to look alike.

The sturdy shoes caused a stir in rows one through five and I decided Olga Sherer’s one of my favorite runway models.

Also, Karlie’s deathwalk still makes me giggle.

Sophia Kokosalaki's Answer to Galliano

SOPHIA SS09 .JPGSo which kind of modern warrior princess, or prince, are you?

John Galliano’s sexy chiffoned babe in made-for-men platforms and a full face of make-up?

Or Sophia Kokosalaki’s sexy-in-a-different-way, armored scene stealer?

We’d choose the latter, and judging from the eager front row reception - was that a smile Alexandra Shulman? - so would the rest of the fashion going crowd here in Paris.

The designer’s dresses went from slightly Grecian to textured metallic and finally to a few sheer flowy gowns decorated with tassels that moved perfectly down the runway. Shoes featured an angled heel in gold and silver that left the foot so strapped in it’d be impossible to fall.

If we walked red carpets, this is what we’d want to wear. Minus the too-literal hair, of course.

Sophia Kokosalaki Makes Jeans

sophia kokosalaki fall 08.jpgWWD reports (though it turns out The Daily had this earlier), that Sophia Kokosalaki is designing a small denim collection.

The six-piece line will include jackets, miniskirts, pants and shorts, all in black - and jeans made of Japanese stretch denim.

Sophia says the line is more wearable than her eponymous label, which she considers “experimental”.

We’re curious to see how someone known best known for flowing dresses and the use of the lyre motif will make jeans, which don’t even sound like they’re from the same planet as any of her previous designs. Though if she pulls it off, she could make her name much better known outside of just the fashion bubble.

But we have a feeling these will be super special jeans anyway (stay tuned for images) - the denim collection is priced between 250 and 800 euros.

Leigh Lezark for House of Holland

310075658_4f53806d88.jpg
You will love this or hate this, and of course, we love it:

Leigh Lezark will walk for Henry Holland this season during London Fashion Week.

Meanwhile, her fellow MisShapes Greg and Geordon will DJ music for the show, and the three will be reunited for Jeremy Scott and Sophia Kokosalaki, where they’re also providing the music.

This is the first time Leigh has ever walked a runway, so if you’re in the audience, don’t make her laugh.

Or she’ll probably hunt you down and stab you with her freshly sharpened eyeliner.

Seriously.

At the Barneys Warehouse Sale, Lots of Balenciaga

Barneys 032.jpg
It’s crazy, it’s overwhelming, it makes you want to scream…

It’s the Barneys Warehouse Sale.

But is it worth braving the insanity?

We did this morning, and you should too, if:

-You really wanted a pair of those satin cap-toe platforms Lindsay wore in the Miu Miu ads. There are lots, and they’re marked down to $235.

-You need a pair of pants for work. There are piles of basic black, white, and tan slacks from Jil Sander and Balenciaga in the $130-300 range.

-You really like Sophia Kokosalaki, or the line she designed for Vionnet, as Sophia has surpassed Alber Elbaz this year as the designer most represented on the sale racks. But be willing to shell out for it, since most of the pieces are still a few thousand dollars - and not that nice!

-You’re a tall girl who wants heels (there are lots of great pumps in sizes nine and ten), or a short girl who wants flats (there are lots of cute ones in size six and seven). If you want cheap designer shoes, there’s no in-between.

-You really loved those Louboutin espadrilles Sarah showed you yesterday - they’re heeeere.

-You do modern dance, and you want a Marc by Marc unitard - they’re everywhere.

-You like Dries van Noten and you like spangles.

There’s also the usual clutch of DVF dresses (some nice Vena Cava, too), mountains of Loomstate hoodies, a lonely feathered Giles gown, tons of Rick Owens tube tops ($50), and lots of great stuff from Balenciaga’s capsule collections (Knits, Silk, Pants).

I picked up a Balenciaga shell ($99) and pants ($138)…

But all I really want to put on are my pajamas. I think I need a nap.

Nine West Does Denim

youll always be known as the intern who didnt go to paris.jpg
Strategies Nine West used to break out of their mall brand ID:

Pairing with Vivienne Westwood, Thakoon, and Sophia Kokosalaki.
Problem: the shoes were too expensive for most Nine West girls, but too cheaply made for $250 shoes.

Creating a premium Nine West line of more expensive, fashion forward shoes.
Problem: girls didn’t want to pay $200 for Nine West shoes when they could pay $200 for Manolos on sale.

Ripping off runway styles from other designers.
Problem: It was so obvious, and judging from your reactions, so unappealing.

So now they’re trying something that has nothing to do with shoes:

This fall, Nine West is doing a huge push to introduce a new denim line, as seen in Macy’s. There are new advertisements, new cuts, new washes, and - we suspect - a new hope that jeans can broaden the brand, and make them more relevant in a market where girls will spend $300 on heels at Bergdorf, or $20 on wedges at Aldo, but not much in between.

The jeans cost about $60, but would you ever buy them?

Vionnet’s New Day: Sophia Kokosalaki Is Out

renee vionnet.JPG
Vogue Paris reports today that the British designer Sophia Kokosalaki is out at Vionnet.

Sophia was hired by the French fashion house just over a year ago. Though her Spring collection for the house got lots of press, Vionnet’s envisioned Fall as a sinister place where shimmering silk was the only bright spot. It was beautifully made and quite chic, but it didn’t look easy to sell.

Vionnet’s reigns have been taken by Marc Audibet, the designer best known for infusing Lycra and stretch fabrics into the industry. He’s credited with helping Prada rebound in the ’90s. More recently, he worked with Salvatore Ferragamo on ready-to-wear collections. Where he takes the house is anyone’s guess, but we hope his Lycra background will lead him to make a band-aid dress or two.

Meanwhile, Sophia is expected to continue with her own line, which we like a lot better. There are also Target rumors for next year…

The Time, They Are a Changin’

vases copy.jpg
We just got the new issue of Time Style & Design, and it’s gorgeous.

There’s a profile of Bruno Frisoni and the relaunched Roger Vivier line.

There’s a mention of Sophia Kokosalaki and the revamped Vionnet collection.

And then there’s a page that honors environmentally conscious brands like Anya Hindmarch and Esque Studio, whose glass-blown honey bears are called “vases inspired by childhood memories.”

We suspect they were actually inspired by 10 grade sessions underneath the bleachers, but no matter. They’re adorable and especially appropriate on a page marked “Green”…

You know, like… oh, never mind.

Christina Ricci’s Party Gift

ricci.jpg
Christina Ricci has never done a campaign for Samsonite, but somehow the suitcase brand decided she was their muse for the season, and threw a party at the Gramery Park Hotel in her honor.

In a dress by Sophia Kokosalaki, Christina answered the same question - “Do you travel a lot? Is your luggage important?” - about fifty times (“Yes, this luggage is so fun,” etc).

Christina’s smile is beautiful and her face is shaped like an Oreo.

The new Samsonite luggage is shaped like those ’70s suitcases in “Almost Famous.” It was designed with help from Cameron Silver, the California style guru who owns Decades, a famous vintage clothing boutique. The lugage is white and stamped with a kooky floral print. “I think it’s too Marimekko,” confided a company employee. “Maybe girls would use it in Japan, but I think it’s wrong for us.”

The crowd seemed to disagree - at the end of the night, everyone got a giant Samsonite umbrella, stamped in the weird floral print.

“You guys,” said one editor to her friends outside, “Don’t laugh at me, but I sort of love this umbrella.”

Then she opened it, even though there was no rain, and twirled around in the street. Her friends did start laughing at her, and took a few steps back, like “we don’t know this girl.”

Christina Ricci was just leaving for her car and she had an umbrella, too.

Sophia Kokosalaki: Something You Knew; Something You Didn’t

daria vionnet.jpgThings you learned five seasons ago: Velvet can be layered. Metallics can be trickled on and off like sink water. Bubble capes are fun. Fashion shows can get boring.

Things you learned yesterday, at Sophia Kokosalaki: Tailored chiffon should always go short. Nobody will ever get over Chanel’s windblown silk sheaths. Even Coco Rocha can look like a Paris party girl with the right black stockings. Fashion shows can get boring.

Will you see it in Vogue this September? Mmmaybe. Will you see it in some really chic stores, and on some really chic women? We’d bet our clothing allowance on it.

See the whole show on Vogue Australia.
