Stella & Jil, Take Two

stella gap kids round two.jpgThere is something a bit awkward about a designer choosing to repeat their “one-time, exclusive, limited edition” collaboration.

We love it - the more the merrier - but for the handful of people influenced to buy because it’s now or never, it must be disappointing when really, there’s nothing exclusive about it.

If you’re not in that camp, you’ll be thrilled to hear that Stella McCartney’s teaming with Gap for yet another collection. It’s still Gap Kids, for Spring, but by now you should know whether you need a girl’s size 12 or 14 and whether you prefer the fit of the boys’ or girls’ jackets.

Also on repeat? Jil Sander’s collection for Uniqlo. Unlike Stella, she’d left room for the possibility. We’re pretty sure her brilliant coats caused the line down Broadway, but we’re curious to see what she does with spring.

Runaway Bunny Finds Diamonds

hilliers bunny pendant.jpgphoto courtesy WWD
Katie Hillier, the creative genius, or accessories designer, behind first Luella, Giles, Stella and then Marc by Marc Jacobs has finally launched something of her own.

It’s the bunny necklace at left, yes she’s really only launched one thing, and it goes on sale at Dover Street Market and Colette this week.

The bunny, whose bottom half is basically a fancy safety pin, is made from 18-karat gold with a diamond eye and retails for $1,325 - probably three or four times the amount her “Daddy, I want a pony” belt sold for ten years ago so here’s hoping for a Katie by Katie Hillier line very soon.

H&M Throws Sonia Rykiel A Parade

sonia rykiel hm ads.jpgAs H&M gets older and wiser, their collaboration launches get bigger and better.

Stella McCartney launched her line with a Gwyneth Paltrow and Dita Von Teese attended bash in an old schoolhouse, Matthew Williamson rocked a ship in the Hudson River with Grace Jones and now, Sonia Rykiel will celebrate her collection for the Swedish mega-brand with a parade and runway show in Paris on December 1.

It’ll be in the Grand Palais, home to Chanel’s runway blow-outs, and feature both the lingerie, debuting for holiday and the knitwear which launches next spring.

No word yet on who will sit front row, but given the star power of Sonia’s 40th Anniversary bash, we have big expectations. And with Lara, Caroline and Anne in the ads, we expect big models, too.

BFC Announces New Award

Kate-Moss-and-Alexa-ChungLondon25.jpgThe British Fashion Council is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds.

After last week’s news about the creation of the BFC and Vogue Fashion Fund, they’ve just this morning announced a new addition to the British Fashion Awards—a one off called the “London 25.”

The “London 25” was created in honor of the 25th anniversary of the awards themselves and the winner is meant to be someone who “who embodies the spirit of London and is an international ambassador for the capital’s fashion industry.” The list of suggested nominees ranges from Stella to Alexa to Vivienne and, of course, Kate.

Unlike the designer awards, the public will be the ones deciding who takes home the prize the evening of December 9th by voting online for their favorites.

So, who gets your vote?

Buy, Buy, Baby

Be Your Own Baby

stella gap kids sweatshirt.jpgSweatshirts and little boy clothes.

Those are two of my great fashion loves. Add Stella McCartney and I’m, for lack of a better word, obsessed.

Which is why, though I’d like her whole Gap collection to fit, I’m just buying this.

The silk cashmere hoodie is only $88 and it’s made long for a kid which means it’ll be perfect on my very un-childlike body. I don’t know if it’s the laid back jock-vibe from spring’s runways or my urge to bundle that’s making me tuck actual sweatshirts underneath everything from my favorite blazer to my trench coat, but this might be a more work appropriate alternative to ripped American Apparel.

Now if I just had this to throw over it, I’d probably wear the same outfit every day until June.

Quote of the Day

“It’s really belittling of the customer to think that anyone from a different price bracket deserves anything less.” —Stella McCartney on her cute designs for Gap Kids in the New York Times. We know what our friends’ little ones are getting for Christmas and Hanukkah this year.

A Stella-r Love Letter

natalia at stella love.jpgDear Stella McCartney,

I still check eBay about once a month hoping to stumble onto the horse pants you did for Chloé. I have dreams about the beribboned wooden espadrilles you sent down your SS05 runway and I guard my chain print dress from your SS06 collection with my life, even though I’m still not quite sure how to wear it.

What I’m trying to say is, I love your clothes and always have, but this season was so perfect that I can’t stop thinking about it

When people ask what I do and I answer, they always ask one of two questions - “What do you think of my outfit?” or “Who’s your favorite designer?” and I always answer McQueen or Vivienne Westwood, lately Christopher Kane. And I really do love all of them, but if I had to wear one designer and one designer only, it’d be you, hands down.

Someone’s In the Kitchen With Zac

zacposencooking.jpgPhoto Courtesy of WWDI didn’t realize until reading WWD this morning that Zac Posen was such a foodie. Turns out he cooks three times a week (even after the Met Ball), And like so many of us, his obsession began with cooking shows, and Martha. “I was a very depressed middle-school student and I watched [those shows] avidly,” he said. “And then Martha Stewart changed my life. Her first cookbook [Entertaining] was given to my mom, but I took it.”

If you want to taste some of what Zac has to offer, he’s cooking with Giada De Laurentiis and Aquavit chef Marcus Samuelsson at a charity event during the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival. Tickets aren’t cheap ($325) but the money goes to hunger organizations. And we’re pretty sure the presentation will be divine.

We know Peter Som is supposed to be a pretty wicked chef too and we’d love to score an invite to one of his dinner’s parties. So, what designer’s aesthetic would you want to see applied to food? As much as I love Karl and Diet Coke (or Coca Lite), I would definitely need a more substantial meal. Stella could probably convince me to go veggie for the night. But I’m thinking Galliano might be my guy for an over-the-top feast.

Trendspotting: You Say Gaga, We Say Stella

no pants trendspotting.jpgStella McCartney sent pants-less looks down her runway as early as her Spring 2008 collection (September of 2007, when Gaga was still just a noise babies made). She carried the look through to last spring’s line-up of pants-less suits and rompers, but this season almost every designer jumped on the bandwagon.

Charles Anastase showed a killer nude and black playsuit; Marc layered pants-less options under military jackets; Miuccia showed hotpants in Milan last night; Brian Reyes’ opening look was nothing but a white bodysuit. As if a lack of pants wasn’t enough, Alex Wang sewed sheer panels into his and Jenni Kayne added a matching leather bandeau, conservatively draped with a grandpa cardigan, of course.

But, well, you know which question remains.

Got Her: Jill Stuart show, New York Public Library

Stalked Her: Because redheads can definitely pull off red, especially this Isabel Marant dress with an Eres bra showing (of course!)

Shot Her: Um, that necklace (Fendi) and those booties (Stella) made us squeal just a little bit. And the purple!

She Said: “This is my friend’s necklace that she never wears. I told her she was stupid for not wearing it.” We agree.

We Say: We wish we were as cool as all the French girls we see. It just looks so darn effortless. Sigh.

Lily Hops & Bops for ELLE

Lily Allen’s landed the cover of ELLE UK’s October issue in honor of the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week.

They’ve put her in a blond wig and custom outfits by Brit designers including Richard Nicoll, Stella McCartney, Burberry and Giles. The crystallized, body con Louise Goldin’s her favorite.

In this behind the scenes video, which also features photographer Rankin talking about how “uber-cool” Lily is, she says she’s never really been into the whole Kate Moss, Sienna Miller thing and jokingly claims Alexa Chung’s her London Style Icon.

It’s the graphic rock star make-up we really couldn’t take our eyes off of though.

Notes from London & St. Trop: Foodie Edition

lilyallenkatemosslilagrace.jpgWhere have all the fashionably fabulous people gone? St. Tropez, that’s where. Kate, Lila Grace, Leo, editors, designers. They’re here on hols where I am also quite lucky to be with my family. Post-beach they can often be found having a nibble at the resto we tried last night. I highly recommend it.

We treated ourselves to La Petite Maison (actually an hour away in Nice), a famed restaurant where they take their food very seriously. Some may know it because Gwyneth Paltrow raves about it on GOOP. I called for reservations and was told “No madam, we are booked until the end of the month.” It would probably help greatly if I was a bold-face name. But instead, I simply used my old London trick: just show up. And voila — a table for five right there and then.

Was it worth it? Yes. Pretentious? A little. The waiter bragged about Elton coming there all the time, and we did spot a gaggle of famous people, most notably Leo DiCaprio and Cindy Crawford.

Meanwhile back in London…

Who’s Popping?

garance dore for gap.jpgThe pop up shop might be the greatest little phenomenon of this recession - we never know where our favorite designer’s going to appear and what exactly they’ll be selling

Today brings word of just a weekend-long Stella McCartney store in a former garage in East Hampton. From August 22nd to August 24th you can buy from both AW09 and her much lauded Resort collection and a bit of the profits will go toward Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center.

Even better is Gap’s 1969 London pop-up.

It opens on September 10th and lasts nine days, just enough time for us to head straight from Heathrow to Carnaby Street. The shop will carry exclusive denim, designer and artist collaborations from people like Pierre Hardy, Albertus Swanpoel and Pharell Williams as well as self-curated exhibition from Garance Doré.

No word on whether you can buy any of her illustrations, but they will be on t-shirts and you can never have too many of those.

Going, Going, Sold!

stevenkleinphotoforauction.jpgYou gotta love a day when you get to namecheck Candy Pratts Price, not once, but twice.

The Style.com Fashion Director is co-chairing a major charity event in the Hamptons on August 15th for the Ellen P. Hermanson Breast Health Center at Southampton Hospital. Stella McCartney, Daphne Guinness, Steven Klein and André Balazs are also on the invite.

The cheapest tickets are $250 which isn’t all that crazy for a New York charity party. But, of course, you’ll need to be in the Hamptons.

Not to fear, there’s another awesome component: an online auction going on now until August 25th.
