the last  magazine midday intern.jpgBe the Last Intern: Magnus Berger and Tenzin Wild’s The Last Magazine needs design and production interns. You need experience and three to five days free to work. {Starworks}

Break It Down: Peter Brant spends $500,000 a month on his polo ponies. He doesn’t understand why his soon to be ex, Stephanie Seymour, spends $50,000 a month on clothes when she could just fly to Paris and take them from Alaia’s studio. And that’s just the tip of their divorce iceberg. {Jezebel}

Sex on Fire Sells:
The Kings of Leon have partnered with Surface to Air to make clothes. The Tennessee kids whipped up some flannel, denim and a leather jacket of course that’ll only be available at Copenhagen’s Paris Texas. {Blackbook}

Birthdays & More: Gemma Ward shares her big day with Anna Wintour, though almost forty years later. She was out and about in New York looking almost unrecognizable. {BryanBoy}

obamafamilyportrait.jpgO-Style: For anyone who wants to truly follow Michelle Obama’s style choices there’s been one go-to site, Mrs-O.org. Now, blogger Mary Tomer’s got her own book on the First Lady that looks to be equally well-done. Also, we love the Alaia in this first official family portrait. {StyleFile}

Hands off our DvF: For shame, criminals of Madrid. Diane von Furstenberg was mugged this weekend in the Spanish city. Though we’re sure AmEx hooked her up with some new cards really quickly. {Jaunted}

Phew! Sesame Street is not, repeat not, collaborating with Amercian Apparel. Thank god, because we don’t want to imagine what Dov was dreaming up for the ad campaign. Shudder. {Stylelist}

cranginecklace.jpgShop Talk: If the credit card machine arrives in time, Philip Crangi’s first store just might open this weekend in the Meatpacking. Shopping for some new jewelry and lunching at Pastis sounds like a pretty perfect Saturday to us. {StyleFile}

Triangulations: When we first read about this Alex von Furstenberg/Ali Kay/Reggie Miller situation over the summer, we didn’t know quite what to think, other than random and huh? Now, it’s gotten even stranger. We can’t imagine DvF is pleased about this at all. {Page Six}

TV on TV: In reality television news, Teen Vogue might be making its way back to the small screen but in what capacity, we’re not sure. Ah, remember the good old Lisa Love days on The Hills? {Fashionologie via Jazzi McG}

Across the Pond: Much like soccer, Cheryl Cole has never really caught on here in the States. But boy do those Brits loooove her. Will she ever become a crossover hit? {Vogue UK}

novembercoverfrenchvogueisabeli.jpgExtreme Carine: Isabeli snags a French Vogue cover, shot by David Sims which we like very much. We also like coverlines that actually make us pay attention. How extreme will they go? Can’t wait to see. {Models.com}

Two All Beef Patties, Special Sauce, Etc: Yesterday it was moustache tees. And today brings a shirt featuring another one of our favorite things, Big Macs. Thanks Traver Rains! {Nylon}

Product Overload: We’re so pumped to see Nine , unattractive Vogue cover notwithstanding. The ladies look so gorgeous in the trailer but we had no idea there was that much product on set. But when Rob Marshall says it’s “all about the hair” you gotta stock up on hairspray. {Allure}

Costume Season: We don’t mean the kind that comes with candy corn. Though these pieces of jewelry make us equally happy and decidedly less nauseous. {W}

Back in Plaid: These shoes mark the return of the Burberry plaid. Are you ready for it, or is it still too soon for you? {Nylon}

The Season of the Nail: We haven’t seen this much chatter about nails in quite a few seasons. But we like it, because what’s easier or more fun to change than your nails. A Scent We’ll Never Buy: Kim Kardashian used to think perfume was made by putting flowers in a blender. She’s also famous for inexplicable reasons, including a sex tape with Brandy’s little brother. But she’s still got a fragrance deal. And I just died a little inside. Also, if those rumors about Sarah Palin getting a beauty contract are even vaguely accurate, you guys may have to institutionalize me. {WWD}

It’s Rick Owens Day Around Here: And we wouldn’t mind if every day was. I’m still dying over this leather jacket that I can’t afford. So maybe I’ll soothe myself with something from his collaboration with Eastpak. {Vogue UK}

LSD’s Burial Outfit?: Apparently it may be a Julian Louie dress. And yes, that’s vaguely morbid. But we still love the commentary on the Vogue-ette’s Fashion Week choices. {StyleFile}

Secret Society: Apparently the A-Gays over at Condé have banded together. They have a name: The Majority. And are even considering a philanthropy. I’m officially obsessed with this frat-tastic endeavor even if it’s starting to give me Pi Phi flashbacks. {Daily Intel}

Twi-Hard: Embarrassing or not, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to reference Twilight. Especially when it crosses over with the modeling world in the form of Noot Seear. She’s in New Moon and also shares our Saved By the Bell obsession. Enough said. {Style File}

Yikes: I’m slightly scared even linking to this story, but what the hell! Richard Tyler made Scientology uniforms. They’re pretty damn creepy and I’m sure typing these words makes me thetin-heavy. Please don’t come try to clear me, Tom Cruise. {Gawker}

Would You Wear

But Would You Actually Wear OTK Boots?

rodarte aw09 thigh high boots.jpgI think I spent an entire month watching over-the-knee boots march down runways.

From Rodarte in New York, to Pam HoggLondon in and Louis Vuitton in Paris - and about a million in between - they were everywhere, but aside from Lauren Santo Domingo’s turn in custom-made Brian Atwoods, we’d placed stretchy leather up to one’s butt cheeks in the runway-only category, along with everything sheer from SS09.

I was wrong, of course. Byrdie Bell broke hers out for a party a couple of weeks ago and as fall merchandise creeps its way into stores, we’re preparing for an onslaught. Stuart Weitzman’s square-toed versions, in both suede and leather, hit Shopbop this week and StyleFile is even contemplating thigh high clogs.

I remember the first time I wore almost knee-high leather boots to my suburban Catholic high school and gave everyone a heart attack. Even if this is New York City circa now, I imagine a similar, if not more dangerous reaction with those six extra inches of leather. I love the idea, am obsessed with the look, but I’m pretty sure I’d look like a hooker regardless of what I wear on the rest of my body.

Abby, however, can’t wait to rock a pair. Thoughts?

Chanel’s Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’

chanel cruise 10.jpgWe’ve started to think of Chanel as a little family.

A royal one of course, with Karl and Lady Amanda Harlech holding court as king and queen, Sebastian playing court jester, and a circle of courtesans, some of whom are in for life (Karen) and some (Irina, Heidi, Lara) who move in and out of favor.

Anyway, the family gathered in Venice yesterday for Chanel’s Cruise ‘10 (ah!) show and while it didn’t go off without a hitch, the clothes held their own in front of the Venetian sunset. The king was late and the queen suffered a mosquito-stung eye, but after the audience took to their wooden deck chairs the girls - Freja, Ikeliene, Siri, Tanya, Liu, Jourdan - strutted down the beach in stripes, tweeds, florals, pajama-like silks and even harlequin prints. There were loads of jewels, strappy sandals, plastic booties and even lace-trimmed biker shorts that make all our thirteen-year-old style dreams come true.

We hope someone packed up the Marchesa Casati-inspired wigs for this weekend’s Life Ball in Vienna while we imagine a dress or two is already headed to Cannes.

St. John Wishes and Caviar Dreams

st john caviar look.jpgSt. John has cooked up a treat for Park Avenue ladies everywhere. The company’s launched an online-only trunk show for a new, smaller collection that starts today, lasting until March 18, with in-store sales set for the upcoming months.

The all-black capsule line consists of the same silhouettes St. John is famous for, and is available alongside their normal offerings on SJK.com.

We can’t get into the fact that it’s all the same price point as their normal line, which would be like Prada reissuing a dress, but in black, and for about a dollar less under another name. Instead, we’ll focus on the fact that this new line is called Caviar.

We think Juicy’s people should contact St. John immediately and demand the name for themselves - because you know it would be perfect for their inevitable, grown-up line.

Fall 2009 New York

The Return of Peter Som

peter som fall 09 opening look.jpgAfter a pretty dramatic 2008, which ended in the announcement that Peter Som would not be showing at this Fashion Week, shots for his collection for Fall 09 have thankfully hit Style.com anyway.

Some of the looks are a little kookier than expected, but that’s probably the best way to make everyone appreciate your return anyway.

In other designer resurrection news, the details of Mayle’s closure have emerged: Expect Jane Mayle’s Elizabeth Street shop to close on February 28th, as originally planned, but for her brief come-back to be available via a pop-up shop just one week later on March 6th (not April, as previously reported). Her last line will be kind of like a refurbished greatest hits, including pieces from her Fall 03 collection, a personal favorite of hers.

And of course, if you’re dying for more designers back-from-the-almost-dead news, tune in Wednesday for glittery reportage of Richie Rich!

Quote of the Day

“I’ll tell you, if there’s one thing I do miss about the ’80s, it’s all the great-looking people who were around. I don’t just mean great-looking like, attractive, I mean great-looking like they had a look. Stephen Sprouse, Teri Toye, Dianne Brill, Billy Idol… For them, every night was another night to dress up and be fabulous.” - Patrick McMullan, to Style.com.
