This Week’s Appointments

thakoons irrelevant gap ad.jpgThe Tribeca Film Festival hit Doha last week and my mom finally saw The September Issue.

She loved Grace, loved Raquel, and wanted to know if Thakoon ever did design for Mango, and if he didn’t, who did? The only other name we remember from Anna’s list, when she sat down with Oscar De La Renta, was Tracey Feith which, thank god, didn’t happen.

But this morning WWD suggested that Moises De La Renta, Oscar’s son, is up for the job. The Spanish brand’s staging their annual fashion show on Wednesday in Madrid’s Magic Box (built for their failed Olympic bid) and Moises is expected to attend. He’ll be among 600 other guests including Scarlett Johansson and Dree Hemingway.

Meanwhile, Thakoon does have a new job. He’s been appointed Creative Director of Tasaki, the Japanese jewelry line known for cultivating their own pearls. He says, “It is exciting to be working with fine jewelry as it will unquestionably feed into my overall creative process… My goal is to approach jewelry design in the same manner that I approach clothing: always move forward but respect the past.”

How Much is Too Much?

rachelzoeprojectmystique.jpgIn this morning’s WWD writer Jacob Bernstein poses an interesting question about whether or not fashion’s intense global exposure takes away a bit of the mystique that made it so interesting for so long.

It’s certainly a valid point. But not one that I think that I can come down on one side or the other on. Certainly, part of what drew me into the world of fashion and magazines as a kid growing up in Indiana was the apparent exclusivity of the club. Well, that along with the beautiful people wearing the beautiful clothes in the beautiful photographs.

But these are different times. Obviously (and thankfully, considering how I earn my living) there’s the internet. But the article also cites reality television (Project Runway, The Rachel Zoe Project, ANTM), documentaries like Valentino: The Last Emperor and The September Issue, and even the photography of Terry Richardson and Juergen Teller as giving the world an actual look in on our little world. Kate Betts said, “Fashion used to be a much smaller and more insulated business,Then it became more of a global business and now it’s in many respects a part of the entertainment business.”

novemberbritishvoguecover.jpgHoly Hotness: Current girl crush Georgia May Jagger looks smokin’ on the November cover of British Vogue. Maybe the staff at American Vogue should take notes because the quick look we just got of Nicole, Marion, Kate, and Penelope was not so cute. {Vogue UK}

Team Grace: She wears her heart on her sleeve through much of The September Issue. Now you can wear Grace Coddington on your chest, in the form of a very cute t-shirt. {Refinery29}

Fight the Power: Boing Boing got into a bit of a fair use legal squabble with the corporate lawyer types at Ralph Lauren over the site’s criticism of an RL ad. Kudos for sticking up for yourselves, but really we’re still freaking the f out over how scary the model looks. Jesus. {BoingBoing}

marc film festival australia bryanboy.jpgIt’s like every morning brings news of a yet another fashion person on film.

While this month’s been devoted to The September Issue and we’re most looking forward to the Sundance debut of Jack & Lazaro’s documentary in two weeks, there’s an entire festival dedicated to Marc Jacobs in between.

It’s in Australia, so we can’t quite make it, but they’ve flown Bryanboy in to kick off each night of screenings on the condition he brings his BB bag (the square, ostrich one Marc made just for him for fall 08) everywhere he goes.

They’ll show, of course, Loïc Prigent’s Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, but they’ll also screen clips from Andy Warhol’s show, Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited (Marc made the luggage), a video compilation of Marc’s runway shows and a few films to set the scene of the old New York in which Marc rose to fashion fame.

The festival runs through September 6th, so if you’re down there soak up all the Marc you can in case they can’t squeeze you into his front-row only show.

A Fearsome Foursome

annagracejamesgeorge_edited-2.jpgWe just asked RJ Cutler (who you should know by now directed The September Issue) if there were any similarities between the way Vogue is run and the way the ‘92 Clinton campaign (the subject of The War Room, which he produced and we very highly recommend) was managed. This was his answer:

“The similarity I would focus on is one of leadership—people who are passionate about what they do and are doing it under high stake circumstances. It’s a good way of describing Anna Wintour. It’s a good way of describing James Carville. And George Stephanopolous. And Grace Coddington. Though they certainly dress differently.”

Anna Rocks Dave’s World

Last night marked Anna Wintour’s television debut.

Vogue’s editor-in-chief landed on Letterman’s Late Night couch to promote The September Issue and Fashion’s Night Out and though CBS billed the segment as “The Devil Meets Dave,” she was, dare we say, delightful.

She starts out recommending that Dave explore Thom Browne, “He cuts his pants like really short, so you can focus entirely on the socks,” before bantering back and forth about the film, the economic state of the fashion industry, her relationship with Grace Coddington and her icy reputation. Despite looking nervous, she holds her own and even Dave seems impressed.

The best bit’s after the movie clip when she desperately tries to hold back laughter.

The September Issue

the september issue review.jpgThe only movie that’s made me laugh harder than The September Issue this year is The Hangover.

Anna Wintour is funny; my mascara is smudged from tears of laughter. The film may start out with Anna saying that fashion’s picked on because people are bitter they aren’t a cool kid, but she only gets more human from there and by the end you might even want to hug her.

Grace Coddington is, as reported, the real star of the movie. Her inner turmoil over the changing industry and her role in Anna’s history plays out on screen and one can’t help but sympathize with her as Anna cancels more and more of her shoots.

The movie travels from New York to Paris for couture to London for a meeting with Mario Testino to Rome for Sienna’s shoot and back to New York to close the issue and present it to Si Newhouse. In Paris, we cringed when Anna shut Stefano Pilati down; in London we laughed at Mario’s grandly cinematic ideas and in Rome we admired Sienna’s energy and Sally Singer’s patience.

Quote of the Day

“The unexpected co-star, at least for people outside the fashion industry, is Grace Coddington…Both women have strong points of view, both are stubborn, each grumbles about but ultimately needs the other. They’re like Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in a Lethal Weapon movie, only British, female, and very nicely dressed.” —Bruce Handy in Vanity Fair on Anna and Grace in The September Issue, which we’re finally seeing tonight. 6 pm can’t come soon enough.
Quote of the Day

“High-level editors at Condé Nast said that a decision by the company to hire the consulting firm McKinsey & Company to review how things are done at the magazines — presumably with the objective of improving efficiency and saving money — has made staffers nervous. ‘That sent shudders, of course,’ an editor said. ‘It’s the fear of the great unknown: What if their consultants really question the culture we live in at Condé Nast?’” - Cathy Horyn on the changing times at 4 Times Square and how The September Issue will be a reminder of much happier times. They’ve already lost their newspaper subscriptions and receptionists…whatever could be next?

Your September Issue

marc and anna september issue.jpgThe September Issue is finally sneaking its way into the world.

There was The Daily’s black market viewing and a secret Brooklyn show this weekend but if you missed both, don’t despair.

If you’re in New York, may we suggest the 7:30 screening at the 92nd Street Y on July 31st . R.J. Cutler himself will be there to answer any and all post-viewing questions.

If you’re on the other coast, you can catch a 7pm screening August 5th at the Paley Center and don’t worry, Cutler will be present there, too.

Otherwise you can catch it in theaters at the end of the month or buy the DVD that same weekend to rewind and re-watch all the good bits.

Anna & Andy?!

anna takes a moment to reflect.jpgAnna Wintour’s having a bit of a love affair with the cameras lately.

The September Issue’s just debuted and according to Gawker, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief is already being followed by another set of cameras, this time from 60 Minutes.

Apparently, they’ve been working on the profile since December and already attended one “glitzy fashion event.”

It sounds like Anna’s looking for a way to reach beyond Vogue’s targeted readers, like those who can buy Valli mid-recession, to grab the attention of the masses and their accompanying ad dollars - or at least what’s left of them.

The only question greater than why Anna’s suddenly embraced camera-life (don’t forget Model.Live, too) is which lucky journalist gets to interview her. We know Andy Rooney usually does his own thing but we think they’d make a wonderful pair (though we’re betting Leslie Stahl).

Maybe they can talk about this.

Quote of the Day

“I was certainly surprised by Anna’s prominence in this industry. It’s true that she is really this singular figure in this enormous global industry. You can make a movie without Stephen Spielberg’s blessing and you can publish software without Bill Gates’ blessing, but you can’t get a dress you designed on a rack without Anna Wintour’s blessing. You kind of have to see it to believe it.” - R.J. Cutler, director of The September Issue.

September Issue to the Tube

the september issue still shot.jpgEver since the news that The September Issue would hit the Sundance circuit, our hopes of seeing it on A&E - as originally intended - dwindled.

But according to WWD, A&E is still planning on airing the most anticipated fashion documentary since Lagerfeld Confidential sometime this year (the date has still yet to be determined.)

So if you couldn’t make it to Sundance this year (hah), fear not. You will see it (eventually) - and for free!
