Soho’s Holiday Stroll

tyra banks plays santa.jpgWhat if we told you that next Thursday night, you could make your way through Soho and get 25% off at Theory?

Then you could swing by Kate’s Paperie and get 15% off all the Christmas cards in the world and stop by Tibi for hot chocolate and 20% off. Or if Missoni’s more your style, you could hop in and grab a free gift with your on-sale purchase. Then you can grab some books for your dad at McNally for 20% off and a free umbrella at Bloomingdale’s in case it starts raining. But don’t eat too many candy canes because when you’re done you can collect your free margarita at LaEsquina and top it off with discounted hot chocolate and cookies from Balthazar. And all the while you’ll have been helping New York City’s homeless.

It’s the first annual Soho Holiday Stroll sponsored by A.C.E.,(The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless), on December 11th from 6 to 11pm. What’s the catch?

The $20 bracelet you have to purchase for access to the discounts. But the money goes straight to charity and if that’s not enough motivation for you, it basically covers your margarita. And if you’d rather give more, you can buy the $150 VIP bracelet which grants you access to the after party, location TBA.

Click here for a list of all the participating stores and their promotions - you can buy your bracelet on line or in most of the stores.

Happy Shopping!

Hair Leaves Vogue, Goes to Meatpacking Boutique

Aggy HairFaran is such a theater geek that she screamed when she heard this news:

On July 7, the new cast of Hair will perform at Theory’s boutique in the Meatpacking District, but not just for one or two songs - the cast will sing out from the racks for a whopping 45 minutes.

We’re so stoked about this, but of course, it’s also funny:

Hair is a show about individualism, free love, sacrifice, art, rebellion, society’s unraveling, and the power (and sometimes the weakness) of youth in America.

Meanwhile, Theory is a store built on $300 slacks and a stable black-white-gray color palette.

We don’t have to spell out the odd contrast, but hey - if Agyness and Gareth can stand against the psychedelic LSD rock n’ roll madness without laughing, then cool, maybe Andrew Rosen and the rest of his staff can manage it, too.

Peace! Love! Pantsuits!

People Are Talking

Is Theory Investing In Young Labels?

Theory DressOverheard in an elevator last night:

A young designer (we won’t mention your name, though we know it), babbling to a friend about how most investment banks won’t put money into a fashion label until it’s made $10 million.

The exception, she said, was Theory, whose president, Andrew Rosen, is meeting with emerging designers, she said, to invest in smaller brands, she said.

The only catch?

If your label is successful, Theory will always get a percentage of your sales - she said.

It’s a cool story if it’s true, but if you’re silly enough to talk loudly in a crowded elevator about your secret business meetings, maybe you’re also silly enough to get your facts wrong…

Would You Wear

Would You Wear Velvet?

ron weasley dressed up.jpgWe wore a strapless, cranberry colored velvet dress to our 8th grade Christmas dance. We might have even worn it with our docs, and we definitely spent the night dancing to Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.

But we haven’t owned anything velvet since that winter of ‘97 and the sight of velvet dresses, jackets, or - god forbid - suits, makes us a bit nauseous.

The fabric looks stale, stiff and inappropriate on persons under the age of seventy-five. In fact, the one time we can remember not liking a Kate Moss ensemble was when it included a velvet coat. And remember when Jerry Seinfeld said, “I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable?” Yeah, that served as a repellent, too.

That said, we’ve seen the fabric popping up in many a holiday window, and in less than cheesy displays. A navy velvet version of Calypso’s classic wrap dress is in their window on our block and Theory makes a slim cut velvet blazer that could make a pair of jeans a bit more polished.

Do you rock velvet around the holidays? Or will you wait until you’re surrounded by grandkids to drape yourself in the lush fabric?
