Happy Birthday NYC

liz and james tee.jpgIt’s New York’s 400th birthday next week.

Which makes us feel wonderfully young and makes designers, including Elizabeth and James, Michael Kors, Tibi, Tory Burch and DvF feel like making one-off designs in honor of the city they love.

The pieces will sell at the two Bloomingdales in New York (where a purchase also gets you two tickets to the Museum of the City of New York) and online.

Everything’s under $128, including jeans from Seven for All Mankind, a scarf from BCBG, a Michael Stars tee and a Kate Spade tote.

It launches on Monday, but if you’re feeling patriotic today, Gerard Butler’s been filming a 4th of July parade on my street all week.

Tibi - What Season is This?

IMG_9383.jpgTibi delivered, as expected, an array of colorful and wearable pieces. There was only one problem - we couldn’t quite nail down the season. First, there were huge furry hats; then there were bright floor length dresses we’d only seen at the beach; next there were fall appropriate coats - and we’re not even going to try to guess in what season you could wear that white, peacock detailed silk jumpsuit.

Even if the show was a little seasonally confused, there were still some things we loved - the long white dress with the peasant embroidered detail was one of our favorites, and it could actually be worn year round. We loved the colors and the flattering wearability of the dresses, yet it sort of peeved us that each short dress was paired with leggings (a look I have a personal vendetta against).

Besides the clothes - the models were fun to watch, too. Lakshmi, Behati, Siri and Tanya D all walked the runway, although strangely, when Tanya got to the end, all the photographers catcalled her. And it didn’t happen just once. Each time she posed, the photographers would start hooting and hollering while Tanya tried not to break into a smile.

Looks like someone’s got a crush!

Soho’s Holiday Stroll

tyra banks plays santa.jpgWhat if we told you that next Thursday night, you could make your way through Soho and get 25% off at Theory?

Then you could swing by Kate’s Paperie and get 15% off all the Christmas cards in the world and stop by Tibi for hot chocolate and 20% off. Or if Missoni’s more your style, you could hop in and grab a free gift with your on-sale purchase. Then you can grab some books for your dad at McNally for 20% off and a free umbrella at Bloomingdale’s in case it starts raining. But don’t eat too many candy canes because when you’re done you can collect your free margarita at LaEsquina and top it off with discounted hot chocolate and cookies from Balthazar. And all the while you’ll have been helping New York City’s homeless.

It’s the first annual Soho Holiday Stroll sponsored by A.C.E.,(The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless), on December 11th from 6 to 11pm. What’s the catch?

The $20 bracelet you have to purchase for access to the discounts. But the money goes straight to charity and if that’s not enough motivation for you, it basically covers your margarita. And if you’d rather give more, you can buy the $150 VIP bracelet which grants you access to the after party, location TBA.

Click here for a list of all the participating stores and their promotions - you can buy your bracelet on line or in most of the stores.

Streetwalker: Flower Power

Streetwalker 71108.jpgCharlie, Assistant to the Creative Director of Tibi

Got Her: About to cross Prince at Lafayette.

Stalked Her: Because she was so tall, we could have sworn she was a model and had to get a closer look. And, among the sea of tourists wearing neutrals, her dress seriously stood out.

Shot Her: Because her dress was a modern take on the 70s, resembled a Marimekko print, yet wasn’t from H&M. Plus, she had great confidence and wasn’t afraid to wear bold stripes and bright flowers.

She Says: “This is actually a Tibi dress. It’s from last season, but I just love it. It makes people smile.”

We Say: We love a little not-so-vintage, vintage.

Tibi to Open Miami Fashion Week

img-thing.jpeg Tibi always reminded us of the dark side of Lily Pulitzer, so it’s sort of great that they’ve signed on to open Miami Fashion Week next month.

The line designed by Amy Smilovic has a Skipper vibe to Tory Burch’s Barbie, and manages to get some playful prints and shapes into the universe without looking too cutesy or too cool. Actually, they could get a little more cool if they wanted, but anyway.

Tibi will hit the Raleigh Hotel on Friday, July 18th at 8 pm.

Expect a lot of pretty girls in bikinis, some fun summer prints, and of course, cocktails, because unlike Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City, you can actually drink while watching swim wear in Florida.

Not that we’d ever tell Fern Mallis we’ve done that, but yeah.

Streetwalker: All Across the Universe

Jenny, 25, Tibi store manager

Got Her: Rushing down Broadway on her lunch break.

Stalked Her: Because her oversize bubble sleeve top had glittering dots and a surprisingly elegant collar.

Shot Her: Because we’ve wanted to scrunch long gloves under short sleeves for awhile, but can’t get the look just right. We always end up looking like we’re in costume. Her proportions and neutral colors made the outfit work perfectly.

She Says: “The gloves are Tibi. I just like to be comfortable. But still chic, you know?”

We Say:
Whatever floats your coat.

Adventures in Copyrights, Part 17

tibis.jpgWe had a bit of deja vu with this oddly striped dress, but we couldn’t quite place it.

Then Lauren Chiang emailed us with the same obsession, except she knew its roots:

The dress may have turned up at Forever 21, at Mandee, at Strawberry, and on street corners, but it started last season on the Tibi runway.

Net-A-Porter has it (at left) for $369.

Meanwhile, we spotted it yesterday at a stall on Broadway for $10.99.

That brought out another mystery:

Was this dress really such a hit that it got girls craving knock-offs?

We love Tibi, but we don’t get it!

Fashion Is Fun

Seen through Yves St. Laurent glasses…

The strangest sight of last night might have been this:

Kanye West nestled in a room full of girls.

He was there to support his fiance, designer Alexis Phifer, as she joined designers from Tibi, Alice + Olivia, and Milly to discuss the demise of little black dresses, and the rise - of course - of their own, as modeled by a handful of adorable tall girls and narrated by Full Frontal Fashion’s Christina Ha.

Among the night’s highlights:

“I didn’t know you were pregnant. I just thought you were on trend!” - Tibi’s Amy Smilovic to Christina Ha, who wore a sack dress from her line.

“I don’t think a dress can ever be too short, as long as you have tights underneath.” - Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia

“There is a wrong way to wear my clothes. I’m sorry, but there is!” - Milly’s Michele Smith

“My favorite dress is probably my wedding dress, which I finally just found. I can’t describe for you right now because my fiance is here, and he’s not allowed to know.” - Alexis
