Rebecca Minkoff presented her first totally complete ready-to-wear apparel collection, along with her handbags yesterday at the Metropolitan Pavilion.
The collection was influenced by “early Tim Burton films” as well as the “90’s beauty aesthetic.” Her inspiration is clear - the black, white, and prison striped pieces are very Nightmare Before Christmas, and I can absolutely see the leopard and floral numbers on Clueless’ Cher, or even early 1990’s Cindy Crawford.
While I can’t say that her rock-chic pieces were especially directional - the shoulder pads, leather, and stud/buckle accents are nothing new - they were both wearable and cute. Her body-conscious minidresses, accented with corset-shapes and lace, are perfect for a night out, while her fun, feminine separates are appropriate for day.
Judging by the wild success of her handbag line, Rebecca’s collection has potential to become the go-to for easy pieces that appeal to uptown and downtown girls alike.

This afternoon the Daily Mail showed us the first pictures of the characters from Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
And while we feel that Tim’s cycle of remaking a classic in a quirky weird way starring Johnny Depp might be getting a little tired, there’s no arguing that the hair and makeup teams are doing some genius work on this set.
I’m kind of loving Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, perhaps because it’s such a very different Anne than we’re used to seeing. And I forever love a perfect scarlet lip with ultra-pale skin.
But from a beauty standpoint, this look leads us to ask the question: when you go from brunette to blond (a current topic of much discussion here at the office) do you bleach the eyebrows too, or do the more dramatic dark brow/light hair combo?
A while back, Rick Owens started releasing a series of fur monsters - first the bunny clutch made of mink ($700), closely followed by The Monster ($850).
And now? Marc’s released a skull face watch, which we find a little too scary-looking for ordinary life (and $200).
So what’s with designers obsessing over busted faces? (Remember that Kidrobot made a mean bunny, too.)
Relatedly, Britt thinks the Marc watch must have been inspired by Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
But for us, this just means we really think Tim Burton should take this trend and run film.
