Matthew Blows It

matthew williamson ss10.jpgYou know a show’s bad when you can’t wait for it to be over, especially when it’s only seven minutes long.

Unfortunately, that’s the way Matthew Williamson went yesterday. It wasn’t all his fault though. The ridiculous heat - sweat poured off front row faces including Olivia Palermo, Cecilia Dean, Twiggy, Yasmin LeBon, Leigh Lezark, Aliona Doletskaya, Michael Roberts and Jodie Harsh - was hard to stomach. Kind of like Williamson’s attempts at tailoring.

So far, he’s built a pretty solid business over the past few years with his haute gypsy, running off to Ibiza look. It includes lots of long flowy dresses, mirrors, colour and hippie dippy frocks often without shape and still eye-poppingly expensive.

His marketing’s genius, Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Plum Sykes, Jade Jagger et al, are his best friends, campaign stars and constant photo companions so he was, essentially selling a dream lifestyle, rather than clothes, which is quite easy to buy into.

But this year, Mr. Williamson decided to tailor which was, we agree, long overdue. And yet it didn’t work. You can’t just add a structured waist and a cupola sleeve without changing everything else that needed changing, i.e. Ibiza happy prints and weird houndstooth which is what came down the runway.

In fact, the final piece, a silk maxi dress, had beauty pageant written all over it, which is probably the worse thing you could say about a collection.

Sass This

SASS SS10 .jpgLast night’s Sass & Bide show, the first of many brands to return to London for its 25th Anniversary celebration, was, above all else, embellished.

Though the crowd wasn’t exactly robust, thanks to the Prime Minister’s Fashion Reception, Alison Mosshart and Twiggy did sit front row and those who were there appeared to love the mostly black and white collection.

There were a handful of black body-con minis covered in black, chrome and gold beads and gems, long white gowns with cut-out backs and gold necklaces or chain mail vests, bedazzled tights, leggings and, unfortunately, quite a few pairs of harem pants.

Sarah Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton’s program notes said they found inspiration in Argentinean gauchos, but we pretty much saw rock n’ roll.

Touching Down in London Town

sarahjaneclarkheidimiddleton.jpegWe’ve still got about a month to go before London Fashion Week begins, so this is sure to not be the last of this sort of announcement, but Sass & Bide will be yet another of the lines returning to show in London this season.

Designers Sarah-Jane Clark and Heidi Middleton, who live in Sydney, said they came up with the concept for the line in London ten years ago and that “to be returning here 10 years later, showing in a city that we love so much and that fuels our creativity, is really exciting!”

I’m a huge fan and was kinda hoping they’d end up back in NYC again. Instead their UK fans like Twiggy and Kate (who showed up for their Shine party earlier this summer) will likely be front and center. It’s quick becoming increasingly more difficult to mask my jealousy that Britt’s heading to LFW sans me.

cat and abbey nippleringgate.jpgNow You See It: Photographer Greg Kadel shot an editorial titled Come As You Are for Australian Vogue and released an early shot to models.com. In the actual magazine, they’ve airbrushed out Abbey Lee & Cat McNeil’s nipple rings. So, the title’s kind of funny. {Frockwriter}

Babies’in’Fashion: Cynthia Rowley’s designing a line of baby clothes for Babies’R’Us. It’s called Hooray, launches in 2009 and she’s been “dying to do baby clothes for a long time.” Because designing bibs and diaper bags gives her something a runway doesn’t? {PRNewswire}

Better & Better & Better:
As if there’ll be a moment to breathe during London Fashion Week, now you’ll have to squeeze in the National Portrait Gallery’s Twiggy exhibition. {Telegraph}

Regulating Retouching?

twiggy_olay[1].jpgKate Winslet is known for lashing out against magazines that Photoshop her body, and now another British beauty’s retouchings have people feeling uncomfortable.

The images of Twiggy’s smooth face in recent Olay Definity (an anti-aging cream) advertisements have moved members of the Parliament to call for action, which we learned about thanks to our friends over at Jezebel.

The Liberal Democrats in Parliament want to ban Photoshopping completely on advertisements aimed at children (those under sixteen), and place disclaimers stating how much Photoshopping was used on all other ads. The politicians who suggested these changes are hoping that this could boost young adults’—specifically girls’—self-esteem, or more accurately, lessen the negative comparison a young girl could make between her body and the perfectly sleek and slim body of a model in a magazine.

Shiny (Mostly) Happy People

katemossforsassandbideshinecharity.jpgTomorrow is the party/auction in London that many have been looking forward to - in large part because we know what great party people the hosts Sass and Bide are. Not to mention charitable.

Sass and Bide have asked ten of their favorite people to interpret what the evening’s theme “Shine” means to them by creating different works. Then comes the auction with proceeds going towards a children’s charity.

And who are these ten chosen ones? Included are Kate Moss, Sam Taylor Wood, Twiggy and Barry Humphries (the U.K.s most treasured female impersonator). They are all expected to appear at the party, except maybe one - Mischa Barton. Doh! Unless they can pull her out of her lockdown.

Mischa, we wish you well.

Stelllllaaaaa!

Stella aw09 .JPGI got stuck in the pit at Stella McCartney’s show this morning - I should land there more often.

My pictures aren’t blurry! And I was smack in the middle of the PR scramble which went something like this, “Kanye said he wants coffee with “mad” cream and sugar.”

“No way. The show’s about to start.”

“I thought Beth Ditto was coming.”

“She is.”

“But they gave her seat to Kanye’s girlfriend.”

“Where’s her dad?”

“Kanye’s girlfriend’s dad?”

“No! Stella’s!”

“Shit!”

And so on and so on until finally everyone who needed to squeeze into the front row - Kanye, his McQueen-wearing girlfriend, Pink, Beth Ditto, Thandie Newton, Twiggy, Paul McCartney & his girlfriend, Salma Hayek, Francois Pinault - sandwiched between Ingrid Sischy and Jefferson Hack.

Stella’s stellar Spring collection was hard to beat. For Fall, you’re already set if you own a slinky negligee or floral slip. A boxy masculine coat with a skinny belt would help, too. What you don’t have is the only thing that kept the clothes from looking ten years older than Stella’s usually do - the full leg faux-leather boots. They had me gasping for air, prompted Rachel Zoe’s assistant Brad to say, “Bet they’re made from potatoes and mashed up cauliflower,” and will be every vegan’s dream answer to next season’s number one trend.

Meanwhile Lara Stone wore an unfortunate velvet sack and the silver tinsel from Raquel’s closing coat fell off and floated through the air while she stormed down the runway.

But it was a Stella McCartney show, which means everyone leaves with a smile.

AbFab Goes West!

patsy and edina absolutely fabulous.jpgIf you’re not familiar with Absolutely Fabulous, get thee to Amazon.com.

The British sitcom ran on and off from 1992 to 2005. It stars Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders), a washed up model and a wannabe PR dame who spend almost the entire series drunk, stoned and decked out in the loudest Moschino and tightest maybe-Alaia they can find.

Patsy and Edina’s fashion obsession led to an insane roster of guest stars including Lacroix, Zandra Rhodes, Gaultier, Erin O’Connor, Twiggy and even Naomi Campbell.

So, we’re kind of jumping for joy that Fox confirmed they’ve picked up the re-make and will debut it later this year (Saunders, the original Edina, has signed on as Executive Producer). This means fashion, fashion, fashion on TV in the form of a killer costume department and hopefully some major guest stars.

Because while Victoria Beckham on TV is fun, a Patsy and Edina meet the Costello boys meet Jourdan Dunn would be life-changing.

Twiggy, Catalogue Designer

TwiggyA few years ago, Twiggy became the face of Marks & Spencer, joining Erin O’Conner and Lily Cole in representing the British department store.

Now it seems she’s gone out on her own.

Catalogues have just gone out to households across the UK, starring Twiggy and her daughter Carly Lawson, with clothes designed by the ’60s icon, too.

The clothes are for a mail-order, mid-priced clothing company called Littlewoods Direct, which according to my British friend, is “sort of like Spiegel in America.”

So, easy clothes for moms, yeah?

On the cover of the newest catalogue, Twiggy is joined by Carly, who was named after Carly Simon but is a designer for Stella McCartney instead of a singer.

Somehow, we doubt Stella will be mad that Carly’s helping out with a “competing” brand.

They both look really, really cute, too.

Agyness’ Likeness Even Gets a Party

agyness looking cool.jpgEverybody seems to want to talk about Agyness getting her own mannequin today, even though that really is old news.

But here’s a fun amendment to all the hype -

The Agyness mannequin is even getting its own party. MAO PR’s throwing the bash in Chelsea on May 20, and Agyness’ mannequin is said to be unveiled wearing an outfit that reflects Agyness’ personal style - we’re assuming something House of Holland is in order.

No word on what Aggy herself will wear - we think it’s safe to assume she’ll be in attendance.

But the real news, of course, would be if Twiggy showed up, too…
