Get Your French On, Giles Deacon

kirsty hume giles deacon ss10.jpgGiles Deacon up and left London Fashion Week last season while everyone else was heading in the opposite direction.

Thanks to his ANDAM award, he had the opportunity to show in Paris, he did, and now he’s not coming back to London.

As if you could say no to Paris.

Despite the fact that the Giles show was always at the top, the Marc Jacobs of London Fashion Week if you will, and the fact that Giles’ Paris show was alone on the very last day of fashion month, he said, “Sales were up 42 per cent for the spring collection, and a lot of new buyers came to the show. I work in London, employ people here, but I need to look at the bigger picture.”

If showing in Paris means more dinosaurs, we’ll happily jump on the bandwagon.

rihanna rocks eddies gauntlet.jpgLove Strong: To sit front row this season, you needed an invite and an Eddie Borgo spike bracelet. If we’re taking trend cues from Rihanna (and really, who isn’t) you’re going to need a gauntlet come February. Meanwhile, the spike bracelet’s still sitting on top of my Christmas list. {Barneys}

Double Duty: Marios Scwhab and Raf Simons discuss designing their own line while designing another. The former thinks designing Halston brings something new to his own label while the latter switches on and off between Jil Sander and his eponymous collection. {VogueUK}

The Grinch Who Stole Luella

luella ss10 all gone.jpgAll those perfect polka dot dresses? The punchy bows and tulip silhouettes from Luella Bartley’s SS10 collection? They basically don’t exist anymore.

The label’s ready-to-wear producer Carla Carini closed last month, unexpectedly, which put a stop to all SS10 production. Whether or not that’s worse than this morning’s news that Luella’s lost their licensee, too, we’re not sure.

Club 21, which has licensed the Luella brand for almost seven years, is done investing in Luella (the brand) and it will stop trading.

The designer told Vogue UK, “This is a very disappointing situation for everyone involved with the brand…It is upsetting not to be able to protect jobs in this difficult economic climate. I love the Luella character and hope that after we have survived this challenging time the Luella girl can have an exciting future ahead of her.”

So if you’re on her side of the ocean, get thee to Luella, before it’s too late. We’ll have to settle for pouting.

Quote of the Day

“I am a complete alcoholic. It used to be so easy to say to someone, ‘Get me a bottle of vodka,’ and they’d run and get it. Going to rehab was the best decision I ever made. The last six months have been the best of my life.” —Lara Stone to Vogue UK (via Fashionologie) We’re happy she’s so happy.

A Knight With Vogue

nick knight somerset public shoot.jpgIt’s rare a week goes by that we don’t dream of living in London, but we’re especially envious of Brits tonight.

Vogue UK reports that Nick Knight will be shooting an editorial for their print book, starring Natalia Vodianova, in public view. Outside shoots are obviously subject to the public eye, but Knight’s actually inviting the masses to watch his shoot at Somerset House as part of his SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution exhibition.

Aside from Knight and Natalia, you’ll also get to watch Vogue UK’s fashion director Lucinda Chambers, stylist Sam McKnight and make-up artist Val Garland work the editorial. As for the clothes, it’s a fairy tale themed shoot featuring custom made dresses set for auction the following day. (The proceeds of which go to Natalia’s charity, The Naked Heart Foundation.)

They’ll be at Somerset until 9 so grab your umbrella and get there early.

To the Moon(boot) and Back

moonboot.jpgIt’s the week of the boot here at Fashionista. So while we’re on the topic…

Of all the super chunky, kind-of-ugly boots that have been conceived over the years, Uggs seem to be the lone survivor. They’ve been around forever and, much to the chagrin of many, are still in fairly high demand.

Another super chunky, kind-of-ugly boot that once had a moment is the Moon Boot. I totally forgot about them until I saw this.

And then I had a laugh remembering how silly my friends looked as they tried to stomp around in them. Once I stopped the giggling I thought, “Are Moon Boots making a comeback?” To which I briskly answered myself, “No, of course not.”

Viva Versace: Guy Trebay sits down with Donatella for a rather sad story in today’s Times. They discuss her past, including Gianni, her friends’ intervention and her stint in rehab, as well as the possible future of Versace. {NY Times}

Well-Heeled: Lara Bohinc, the Brit behind a line of stellar knot jewelry, is launching shoes. She finds the process loads easier than designing bags and jewels. {VogueUK}

Holy Cuteness: I (Abby) need to be revived after overloading on adorable thanks to this street style blog for kiddos. One of the post titles is “Andre Leon Smalley” (dying!!!) and there is one wicked Tina Turner costume from Halloween. This is most definitely one of my new favorite things. {Planet Awesome Kid} via {Refinery29}

Georgia Jagger for Versace

georgia jagger lands versace.jpgOn Saturday morning I read that Georgia Jagger was the new face of Versace.

Then I dressed up as a nevernude and drank too much tequila so I’m just remembering now what I meant to report Monday morning.

The Imaginary Socialite tucked the tidbit into the bottom of a roundup:

“Georgia Jagger for Versace?! Bestill our fashion hearts; this is amazing.”

We’re not sure there’s a right way and a wrong way to become a super famous awesome model, but landing a solid denim campaign (Hudson), followed by a Vogue cover (UK), a cosmetic contract (Rimmel) and then graduating to a major house (Versace), seems damn perfect.

Vogue’s Cold Feet

Vogue.TV just launched their new series, 60 Seconds to Chic.

It’s hosted by Louise Roe, who used to host videos for Vogue UK before moving to America and trying, maybe, to follow in Cat Deeley’s footsteps.

This first episode features winter boots (in fact, it’s almost like a commercial for Sorrel), but styled for different winter occasions including a night out. Louise, who’s credited as a Vogue.TV ‘stylist’ pairs short furry galoshes with a black mini-dress and sequin jacket which sounds cozy, but awkward, kind of like when I wore galoshes with a dress on fashion’s night out and then it didn’t rain. Would you actually wear winter boots to dinner with your cocktail dress? Even if Vogue says it’s ok?

UK Fashion Continues Global Domination

vogue uk bfc fashion fund.jpgThe Brit’s are taking a cue from our successful CFDA/Vogue Fashion fund; Vogue UK and the British Fashion Council have teamed up for the sake of their country’s flourishing young design talent and formed the BFC Vogue Designer Fashion Fund.

Each year, the fund will award £200,000 to a fresh-faced designer, plus a mentor, to help him or her build a successful brand on “the international stage.”

Britain does, of course, already have similar programs. Topshop’s NewGen, which has sponsored Christopher Kane, Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll, Louise Goldin, Henry Holland and so many more tends to scoop up the most talented, most broke of St. Martin’s talent and give them the perfect place to show, but the BFC/Vogue fund will have more follow through and individualized attention.

Ashished

ashish boyfriend vest nap.jpgWhile Target’s making brands like Hayden-Harnett and Rodarte household names, Net-a-Porter’s building a home for lesser known designers and showcasing their work for a crowd already in love with kooky fashion.

Last year they launched an exclusive Marios Schwab section (pre-Halston) and now they’ll host an exclusive holiday collection from Ashish Gupta.

The London-based designer’s carried on a long love affair with sequins and though his latest collection revolved around both a fantasy vacation and a love of Nike, he’s designed a more subdued collection for the online shop.

He tells Vogue UK that it’s “a range of beautiful easy to wear pieces in soft shimmer black and metallics…perfect for easy evening glamour.”

Illustrations by Giles

giles deacon illustrator.jpgGiles Deacon’s illustrated the cover of Threads, a novel by Sophia Bennet.

The story, ‘a fashion fairytale’, was made for a teenage audience, but like so many books right now appears to have attracted quite the mature following.

Whether the readers are wearing Giles or not, who knows, but designer sketches never grow old since they do seem like a closer look into their creative mind than what you see on the runway. Sketches are their stream of consciousness, and though Giles’ illustrations for the book have probably been retouched and enhanced, it’s nothing like what happens to a dress from the mind to paper to runway to store.

Anyway, you can buy the book in UK stores, or check www.threadsthebook.com to get it stateside.

davidbaileyshotofjeanshrimpton.jpgWe’ve been talking photography here at the office today thanks to the fact that I’m still a little weak in the knees about my Chuck Close moment.

Also, the LA Times has a really nice piece that traces the most influential people in modern fashion photography. Seriously if I had money to spend on art, a huge chunk of it would go to photography.

There would be Chuck Close (of course), as much David Bailey as I could get my hands on, and if I could ever afford to have Mario Testino shoot me looking a fraction as pretty as he has so many other girls, I would be self-involved enough to hang a picture of me in my apartment.

Georgia & Coco for Rimmel

georgia jagger to rimmel.jpgRimmel’s signed Georgia Jagger and Coco Rocha.

At the rate she’s going, Georgia might soon be the new Coco. Her Hudson Jean ads just debuted last month, her first Vogue UK cover this month and now, with a cosmetic contract in hand, she’s officially more model than someone’s daughter.

The British makeup brand, most notably fronted by Kate Moss, needs a shakeup, “Rimmel embodies the London look, which is very resonant with young people all over the world who look to London as a center of multiculturalism and freedom of expression.”

The senior vice president of marketing’s words sounded a bit off until WWD made sure to note that by January, they’ll have signed three new not-white faces. For now, they’re hoping Georgia’s provocative edge and Coco’s “sensuality” will spice things up a bit.

The Kids Are(n’t) Alright

kate hudson bazaar shoot.jpgThis picture landed in my inbox because of the Bally bag Kate Hudson’s holding - which is cute - but I’m writing about it because of the kid.

It’s from the set of a shoot for Harper’s Bazaar (I swear we’re not trying to belabor our Bazaar feelings; it just keeps coming up) in which she’s modeling not just the latest fashion, but also her five-year-old son, Ryder.

The kid looks adorable, but it’s jarring to see him voluntarily put in front of the camera when so many people - famous people - complain about media attention toward their children. It’s something we touched on last year when Natalia Vodianova dragged her entire clan into the pages of Vogue and something we thought about again when Angela Lindvall posed with her kids in British Vogue and then gave her son a starring role in her Gap ad.

Is it okay because it’s a controlled environment, unlike the paparazzi on the sidewalk? Because they’re still kids either way, and they’re not the ones choosing to model, their parents just happen to be really, really pretty. Are we nuts? Or would you, too, prefer your fashion editorials without a side of child?
